It changed over time, but in other ways it didn’t. The houses might be structurally sound, the bridges were cast of iron and steel and aside from magical intervention, they stayed standing. Fire and disease were no longer city-wide threats, but the dark side of humanity still lurked in the shadows and the nights were never safe. Really, aside from a fresh paintjob and the attritions of cars, London hadn’t changed much since Dacian’s first visit. It was still a monstrosity, and he still hated it.
Thankfully with so many tourists, finding a meal was as easy. All one had to do was lurk skilfully in an alleyway until a meal dropped into your lap. A good job really, as the vampire wasn’t entirely at full fitness. There was no discernable limp to his walk, but there was a lethargy about him that only time would heal. Having a piece of glass scraping your heart would do that to a man. Well, a vampire. It was a wonder he’d survived really.
Thankfully – or not thankfully as he’d complained to himself about for the last month – he’d been fixed up by the coven whose representatives happened to be passing by at the time. What a happy coincidence. As was the tradition with vampires, you did not get something for nothing. He was no in debt, and essentially owned by the coven until he had worked it off. And that would be a while.
Until he healed fully, however, he was of little use. So he found himself in London with a group of pretentious mainstream vampires who loved nothing more than to entertain the local supernatural community. Dacian abhorred it. The theatrics of it all, it was ridiculous. Grumbling under his slightly wheezing breath, he stalked into the darkest ally he could find and waited. Dinner would be along soon, and that would take the edge off his perpetual ire.

Ah London, how it had changed since he’d been a boy. How long had it been since he’d been here last, seventy years? Dominic Spencer could simply not believe he’d been away from his home town for so long. As long as he stayed away from Soho he’d be alright, there were no overwhelming memories from his human life about this part of London. Absently the blond haired vampire ran his tongue over his elongated canine teeth; his fangs, his weapons. The boy’s stomach growled at the scents of all the people around. It was about time for a feed he thought.
Dom’s eyes followed the tourists as they walked past him, not seeing a single one he’d like to taste. The boy huffed and decided to settle himself at a table outside a busy pub. Hopefully it wouldn’t take long before prey found him. More than likely it would be some drunk girl –definitely not his romantic type- looking for a good time or some drunk guy looking for a fight. Subconsciously Dom stuck out his tongue in disgust, he hated making a meal out of drunks but unfortunately they were the easiest targets.
As he’d suspected it didn’t take long before a brunette girl who wouldn’t have been much older than his own, outward age, joined him at his table. Underneath the liquor she smelt pleasing enough, not an A negative but she’d do. With a few choice, flirtatious words Dominic had the girl following him to a back alley ready for a ‘good time’. Forcefully he pushed her up against one of the brick sidewalls and revealed his fangs to her. The girl screamed and struggled as Dom put on his best Dracula accent before finally sinking his fangs into her neck. The warm, viscous liquid that streamed into the vampire’s mouth made him groan in relief and his stomach growl.
It wasn’t until Dom was finished with the girl that he noticed he’d picked an already occupied alley to drag his meal to. ”Holy shit!” he cried when he finally saw the stranger. He bared his fangs warily and sniffed the air. It was another vampire that had stood watching him. ”I know what you are. Now who are you, stranger?” the boy asked cautiously, all his attention focused on the stranger. He would be ready for a fight if it came to that, his stomach was full and his arrogance assured him he would win.

The sight of a gigging girl and her boyfriend rounding the corner had him tensing until his senses reported back that the man was a vampire. Great, a gatecrasher. Dacian assumed the other hunter would move on with his food when he realised this alley was already taken, but apparently the vampire was a little lax on his observation. Raising a brow and crossing his arms (with only the slightest wince) he leaned back against the wall to watch.
And he couldn’t believe his eyes. Being a Londonian vampire, perhaps he should have expected as much. The immortal bared his fangs and let her scream of all things before affecting a Transylvanian accent and finally biting the girl. Dacian looked on, appalled. London vampires were all showy, it was a wonder they hadn’t been ousted by the humans already. The flaxen-haired vampire must be young, because no self-respecting professional acted like that. Dacian hoped he didn’t dare try something like that with a witch – it was a death sentence.
By the time the vampire had taken his fill and actually noticed Dacian, the older predator has reined in his surprise at the ludicrous behaviour and lounged again in the deepest shadow of the alley. He quirked a brow at the defensive display and stood away from the wall, arms resting to his sides. He was hardly threatened by the blatant distrust, and showed as much with his casual body language. The boy was hardly worth the effort of conversation. “If you didn’t know, I’d contemplate putting you out of your misery.” He waved a hand at the crumpled girl. “What do you call that? ‘Style’?” The dark-haired man commented dryly. “Keep your voice down, mortals might be a little dull-witted, but they’re not entirely deaf.”
He tilted his head a little, nostrils flaring. Ah, A negative. A good flavour. He shunted the first blond-haired association that came to mind aside and looked critically over the girl. “Good taste, you could do with a more subtle approach, however.”

At the other vampire’s body language, Dom relaxed a little, closing his lips down over his fangs. There wouldn’t be a fight evidently but that still didn’t mean the boy was ready to trust the other vamper. He frowned at the man, obviously older than him by the way he blatantly thought he was better than him. His relaxed and casual manner irked the younger vampire; he absolutely hated it when people were like that towards him. Yes, Dominic was a hypocrite.
He was slightly taken aback when the other commented on his feeding technique. ”No, I call that having a bit of fun with a stupid muggle,” he retorted defensively, gesturing at the unconscious woman. Obviously older vampires had no idea what fun meant, there was no point explaining what he’d done to this stranger and the stranger in turn wouldn’t make him feel stupid for joking around. His maker had always said don’t play with your food but where was the fun in that?
”My approach is fine, I can be subtle when I want to,” Dom informed with a smug grin, flashing his reddened fangs. He moved to rest the woman up against the wall, checking her pulse as he did so. She was still alive, just like how he left all his meals, and she wouldn’t remember who he was by the time she woke up in a few hours. ”Now, I’ll ask again. Who are you? My name’s Dominic, Dominic Spencer,” the flaxen-haired vampire introduced himself politely, offering the older of the two his hand. Abruptly he took it back; his fingertips had been covered in the woman’s blood. Casually he wiped it on her dress and then offered it again to the stranger.

There was that word again, muggle. Dacian wondered if he’d been a wizard in a former life. He grimaced at the use of it. “It’s a human, regardless if it can make pretty sparkles with a wooden stick or not.” Dacian curled his own lip, a little disgruntled by the mess the man had made of himself. Feeding was an art, but Dominic here seemed to think finger-painting was an art.
He eyed the man’s blood-smeared hand dubiously but unwilling to provoke what was left of the man’s dignity, he stepped forward and shook the hand. In the gloom of the alley compared the absolute gloom of the shadows he’d been lurking in, his face could be seen. Naturally the skin was pale, but unlike the flawless face of the younger vampire, a thin still-pink scar ran over his right eye socket, marking faintly through his eyebrow and gouging deeper into the high curve of his cheekbone. Only holy weapons could achieve such a mark, and under the dark clothing there were many more, some just as fresh as the one on his face, others centuries old.
Since his ‘rescue’, his hair had been cut short and curled slightly an inch from his scalp but while it was new for Dacian, it would be Dom’s first impression. . The two stood at an equal height, though that was probably something to do with the slight heel on Dacian’s boots and the complete lack of such on Dominic’s ‘fashionable’ shoes. “Dacian.” He relented, giving his name. The older vampire retracted his hand and looked down at the girl again. He shook his head. “You could at least be clean – what is she going to think when she wakes up to find blood smeared on her dress?”

”Oh good, I said the right word then, muggle. Obviously I did otherwise you wouldn’t have mentioned anything about the sticks, which I do believe are called wands,” the younger vampire drawled lazily, tilting his head at the older. Did he seriously not know what the magic sticks were called? There would be no real point in asking him what he knew about Hogsmeade in that case. That was rather disappointing, but then again there wouldn’t be any harm in asking later maybe.
The stranger’s handshake was firm and all through it Dominic had to resist the urge to snatch his hand back. Older vampires were generally stronger and the boy couldn’t help but feel vulnerable with the contact. ‘Dacian’, as he called himself, could easily break his arm from the handshake. A rational person would ask why on Earth Dacian would do such a thing but Dom had been unfortunate enough to have had things like that happen to him over the years.
”Nice to meet you Dacian,” the blond vampire nodded politely, letting out a subconscious sigh of relief when the handshake stopped. His gaze wandered over the other vampire’s face and his blue eyes widened. That scar made the boy shudder, only something holy could have done that. ”She won’t notice, she’ll probably just think somebody got some sickly red drink on her in the heat of the party. Anyway there wouldn’t have been blood on her in the first place if you hadn’t startled me before I had the chance to clean up,” Dom said looking away from Dacian’s face. He wanted to ask what had happened, it still looked fresh, but even he with his lax social boundaries knew it would be rude to pry.
To prove his point and to distract himself from the man's scarred face, the flaxen-haired vampire picked up the woman and licked the wound he’d inflicted on her neck. When he’d noticed Dacian he’d forgotten about leaving no trace of what he’d done. He savoured the taste of the last few droplets of blood that dribbled from the healing wound and then checked her over for any other cuts that may have occurred in the struggle. ”There, that better?” he pointed at the healing bite with a smirk. ”Hey,” he said quite suddenly, remembering his previous train of thought. ”You wouldn’t be able to tell me about the village of Hogsmeade would you?”

Dacian’s eyebrows drew in a few millimetres. Oh yes, Dacian was well acquainted with wands. The term ‘muggle’ was too much a reminder of exactly how much experience he had with wands. Right now, he was happy to avoid even thinking about magic.
Thankfully Dominic and his incompetence were a fair distraction. His assumption of the vampires youth was confirmed by his relieved sigh. Primarily because Dacian was much older and if the boy wasn’t a little bit apprehensive, he was either stupid or old enough to take care of himself. Secondly, most vampires lost the habit of breathing after a while. Dacian was an exception, as Dom might be, who used his breath for more than talking. A sigh was a sign that his lungs were full, and still attuned to his emotions.
“I shouldn’t have startled you at all. You should have noticed me.” Dacian was not under the illusion that he could hide himself that well. Any vampire worth his salt checked the alley before he bit down on dinner. At least the youngster knew how to clean up, and Dacian nodded once in approval.
He was crouched looking at the neat bite wound, already healing, when Dom said the magic word. Before the end of the sentence had even been processed in his mind, he was on his feet, his right hand around the vampire’s throat and was slamming him against the far wall of the alley. Dom had been playing with his food when he bore his fangs. Dacian was not playing. An inhuman growl ripped from his throat and he put enough pressure on the blonde’s throat that it would suffocate a human.
“What do you know about Hogsmeade?” He hissed, the absolute fury turning his previously impassive face into a fearsome grimace. Faces and names started to surface in his mind, but he pushed them down. He was not going back to Hogsmeade, he couldn’t, and neither was this little Dracula.

And there he went again, why were all the older vampires he met so self-righteous? Sure they had a few years experience on him but that didn’t make them better hunters than he was. Sure Dom had missed Dacian standing in the alley but come on; the guy was wearing dark colours on a dark night in a dark side street. The boy was willing to lay money down on the fact Dacian there had made the same minor mistakes in the past and he was going to let him know. ”I’m sure you’ve done i-“
Before he could finish there was a hand around his windpipe and he felt himself being shoved into the wall behind him. Okay, what the fuck happened there? Dom struggled against the wrought iron grip to no avail and gasped for air he didn’t really need. Sure he could survive without it but he’d been breathing for one hundred and eight years now and it felt uncomfortable not to. The voice of his maker sounded in his head, yelling at him for continuing to breathe. Breathing was a human habit and he was no longer human. Well all Dom could think was screw him, he was going to keep breathing whether his maker liked it or not. Breathing was a link back to being human.
Like Dacian, Dominic bared his fangs but no longer made any moves to fight. The last thing the blond wanted was for his neck to be shattered at the hands, or hand, of the older vampire. ”Can’t. Talk,” the boy choked out, pointing to Dacian’s hand that was cutting of the air needed to answer his question. The hand loosened its grip and quickly the younger vampire sucked in a few mouthfuls of air, enjoying the feeling of it in his lungs.
”Thank you, now I can answer your question. I've hit a raw spot with that subject I presume? Anyway, I don’t know much about the place, only that it’s the only strictly magical folk place in Scotland and that there are witches, wizards and even rumours of other vampers and weres there. Now will you let me go? I gather from your previous reaction Hogsmeade is where you got that scar on your face,” he answered indignantly, unwisely snapping at Dacian about the scar.
Yes, Dominic Spencer had no idea when to shut his mouth.

Dacian leaned in a little closer. He could kill him so easily. This vampire was barely a man. He’d be doing the world a favour. There was no room for wannabes. It was only a matter of time before he made a bigger mistake, he rationalised, and killing him now would be a pre-emptive strike.
Luckily Dacian was under the thumb of the coven, and any more corpses turning up in his wake would likely trigger the events leading to his own swift death. No, the boy did not deserve to die. He was a little untidy, but there was no malicious intent and aside from mentioning Hogsmeade, he’d made no other sign that he was anything more than an aspiring tourist. Thanks to Dacian’s overreaction, he’d likely given the boy the idea that the place was more interesting than the brochure advertised.
His strangled words confirmed his paranoia was unjust. A tourist, of all things. His snarl lessened, but the harshness of his gaze returned when his scar was mentioned. Oh yes, he’d almost forgotten. His centuries-old look had now dramatically changed. Gone were the shoulder-length hair and the eternally youthful face. The scar was on permanent display. Perhaps when he had learnt from his mistakes, he would grow the hair back at least to attempt to hide the scar.
As Dominic surmised, Dacian had made a mistake or two in his past. Again and again, in fact, he made the wrong decision, let his temper get the better of him. Even his reasons for going to Hogsmeade in the first place were inspired by his inability to leave well enough alone. Even old mistakes he had avoided the consequences of at the time came back to haunt him. He needed to learn from his mistakes before he got himself killed, or worse, his loved ones.
He loosened his grip on the younger vampire, standing at arm’s length and using the hold to keep him against the wall. “Keep out of Hogsmeade.” Did he downplay its attraction, or settle for a deterrent that the boy would more readily heed? Dacian’s lip gave a curve, cheek wrinkling around the scar. “If I hear you’ve paid a visit, I’ll give you a scar to match every one of mine.” Something about the shark-like smile he gave suggested Dominic would not want that. Not in the least.

Of all the things he could have felt, Dom began to feel bored at being held against a wall. He hadn’t done anything wrong, only mentioned some village out in the middle of nowhere. The boy tried to squirm out of the grip in the hope that it had loosened some more but again there was no use. This whole turn of events had only made the, previously insignificant, village all that more interesting to Dominic. What was there that made this Dacian fellow so angry he lashed out at unsuspecting fellow vampires?
He tilted his head away from the older vampire as it leaned in closer. ”Personal space,” Dom quipped with another attempted escape squirm. If he could tilt his head enough he could bite Dacian and then run for his life afterwards. It wasn’t the most honourable escape but it was an escape. The flaxen-haired vampire eyed the scar again and found himself wondering what exactly had caused it and were there any others?
He himself had encountered crucifixes numerous times, his own mother had threatened him with one when he’d been newly turned, but never had one touched his skin. Dom supposed he was lucky, from what he’d heard it hurt like nothing he’d ever felt and he hoped he never had to go through it. Maybe it was because he didn’t act like a vampire around humans so they had no need to whip out the holy items and they didn’t have time to when it was too late.
Dacian’s threats brought the younger vampire out of his musings and he answered them by baring his fangs once more. ”I don’t take kindly to threats Dacian,” he hissed, a rare spiteful glare on his face. Who was this man to think he could govern what Dom did? Hell if he’d been undecided before about going he was definitely heading to Hogsmeade now. ”Who do you think you are? My maker? I will go where ever I damn well please and you will not stop me,” he retorted snidely. ”Now let me go old man. Do not take out on me what was unfortunate enough to happen to you,” again Dom squirmed, growing tired of this game.
