Oxford, England.

Caucasian.
Blood:
Pureblood.

Xavier (Deceased) and Millicent Prince (80).
Parents: Frances Grey (67) and Philippa Grey [nee Prince] (54).
Siblings: Jeremy Grey (36) and Ruth Grey [nee Bulstrode] (36, sister in law),
Kathleen Grey (34),
Markus Grey (33).
Other: Rebecca Grey (9, Niece).
Pets:
Pickle is a magical guinea pig that changes colour. He is a good tempered pet who puts up with any amount of poking and prodding so long as he‘s being lavished with attention. Abe often brings him to class, leaving him on the desk rather like a furry paperweight that changes colour every so often. Many of the students are aware that radish is Pickle‘s favourite treat.
Kristoff is a grey kitten that Abe rescued from the clutches of the whomping willow last year. Nobody has stepped forwards to claim him yet and so Abe is stuck looking after him. Krissy has a nose for trouble and will often explore places like up the tapestries or inside the suits of armour and then get stuck. For this reason Abe spends quite a lot of time looking for him.
Wand Type:
An unusual fusion of Apple and Alder wood. Abe‘s wand has the weakness of there always being the split between the two woods. At times the nature of the two types of wood are in conflict which can make spell casting a tricky art. The fusion gives him the advantage of a wide breadth of skills and attributes even if each skill cannot be achieved to the highest level possible with a wand of a single wood type. The core is Phoenix Feather. Abe‘s wand works well with transfiguration spells, is better in direct traditional combat rather than dark arts curses although it does allow him skill in illusion magic. It is weak during charm work. The wand is long and spindly looking at eleven inches and it almost seems as though it could snap in half at any moment. There is a two-tone wood effect spiralling up it‘s length.
Appearance
Picture:
Hair Colour and Style:
Abe‘s hair is kept short and is light brown in colour. If often looks slightly unkempt, but not wildly out of control. His mother is always trying to persuade him to get a more respectable cut, but he is set in his ways.
Eye Colour:
Hazel.
Build:
Thin and lanky. Abe clearly isn‘t cut out for activities that require a lot of strength and stamina. Despite his ungainly height he seems to have an almost wry agility.
Skin Tone:
Pale.
Height:
6‘.
Dress Style:
Coming from a traditional pureblood family Abe has never worn anything but the finest wizarding robes. He is used to style, comfort and quality and would probably kick up a fuss if he was forced to wear anything less than the best. At times he has an almost seventies influence to the clothes he wears under his robes with wide collared shirts and a favourite maroon leather jacket, but when he‘s with his family he‘s forced into more formal and upper-class clothing.
Specifics:
Abe is almost always smiling, the cheeky grin, that at times appears a little smug, relaying the enthusiasm and enjoyment he finds in the work he does at Hogwarts. This smile can be a little misleading because while he is mostly a good tempered soul at times he has outbursts of rage usually brought on by a build up of irritating circumstances. His face is open and expressive, he doesn’t usually hide what he is thinking or feeling, not because he is incapable of doing so just because he believes in honesty above all else. Abe often sports dark circles under his eyes, he stays up far too late working on research projects or preparing for classes.
In Front Of Friends
Sexual Orientation:
Heterosexual.
Self Image:
While Abe is quite satisfied with his own appearance, so much so that he rarely bothers to spend much time on it, he isn’t quite so lenient with himself about his achievements. Even though he succeeds at almost everything he tries, through a combination of hard work, determination and at times just plain intelligence, this doesn‘t stop him from feeling unsatisfied. He is a perfectionist and not only expects the best from the people around him, but also from himself. He always tries to take on bigger and more ambitious projects so he can compete with his own previous achievements and try to improve himself.
To the Outward Eye:
Abe is generally one of those people that is easy to get along with. On a purely superficial level he seems approachable and so he has little trouble gaining the trust of his classes, especially first years, despite his unorthodox teaching style. He is clearly passionate about the subject he teaches, but this doesn’t necessarily help him all the time. In class he’ll often go off on several tangents and completely forget the main aim of the lesson in the first place and has even been known to absentmindedly dismiss students without setting any homework. One thing people can’t avoid noticing about Abe is that he’s loud. He never avoids voicing his opinions and it is fairly obvious when he finds something funny as his laugh is loud and booming.
General Personality:
Abe was raised in a very proud pureblood family and so from a very young age has had the idea that they’re superior drilled into his head. Of course he is capable of thinking for himself and making up his own mind on the matter so he long ago decided that he has no problem with muggleborn and halfblood wizards. The lingering belief that pureblood lines are better still remains though.
However he would not put his full support behind a wizarding force aiming to wipe out all muggles and non pure bloodlines. He rather harshly believes that these lesser groups are required to set the standards for the rest of the magical society. Abe is also fiercely loyal to the school and they way it is run, he heard stories of the teaching methods used during Voldemort’s brief takeover of the school during the great war and didn’t agree with them at all. If nothing else he would defend Hogwarts and it’s students.
The unfortunate mix of his perfectionist nature, enthusiasm and competitive spirit often cause Abe to take on more than he can really handle. Everything he tries must be completed to the best of his ability and if he spots a mistake it will drive him to distraction until it is fixed. He likes nothing better than the satisfaction of conveying a complex magical principle in one of his classes and seeing the understanding in his student’s eyes.
When it comes to teaching Abe has the patience of a saint. His energy and determination will allow him to persist in explaining something as many times as it is needed to give a student the understanding required to complete the course. He is adaptable and not above trying any trick to get his students to listen to him. Unfortunately this good natured style does not always carry over into his general personality. He does not suffer fools easily and even the smallest things can get on his nerves until he snaps. Abe’s temper is rather notorious around the school and if people see him without his trademark smile they know to stay out of his way.
Social Status:
Being a pureblood awards him an elevated status in the wizarding communities. He knows how to socialise and who to talk to when he needs to gain influence, a useful skill taught to him by his parents. At times though, he ruffles a few feathers by refusing to back down during heated debates. Within the school Abe is liked well enough, he is popular among the more confident students, but can sometimes seem a little overbearing to the more shy and retiring ones.
Positive Traits:
Abe follows the wizard’s chess competitions held within the wizarding world almost obsessively. He’s even been known to join bets on which of the great players will win and he always has an opinion to share about strategy. Politics is another area that Abe is interested in. He keeps track of public opinion on muggle integrating policy and also tries to follow all the rumours about any possible Death Eater uprisings. Abe does a lot of research work in the field of Arithmancy, developing new ideas and theories as he likes to be on the cutting edge of the topic.
Likes:
A Large Grey Wolf - The wolf is a pack animal. Abe understands the need for hierarchy and also welcomes the support of people around him.
Boggart:
Abe is deathly allergic to bee stings and so his boggart always appears as either an angry swarm of them or one giant killer bee.
World Passing By
Subject Taught:
Abe always has at least one class competition running. Often he puts up a difficult arithmancy puzzle up with the promise of house points to whichever student can solve it. He pushes his pupils hard to achieve the best that they can and will patiently coax them into learning whether they want to or not. Much of Abe’s lessons are based on debate, he has his classroom permanently arranged into a circle to make discussion easier.
He likes to set practical work, allowing students a period of trial and error to help them better understand the theories they’re learning instead of just showing them what to do. He always sets the minimum number of essays and tests for the year. Abe believes that his pureblood students are more adept at magic than other pupils. This may be a biased view but it does not always work in the pureblood’s favour. Because he expects them to do better he sets the standards for them higher and so it often seems like his halfblood and muggleborn students are achieving better grades.
Past Grades:
Abe always did well in school. He got some of the best NEWTs in the history of the school leaving with almost a full set of O grades. The only subject he didn’t do so well in was charms which has never been one of his strong suits so he only achieved an E.
History:
Abe is a product of the merge of two wealthy and influential pureblood families. The Prince family have a long history of being sorted into Slytherin and through political influence have amassed a great wealth. The Grey family pride themselves on their intelligence and magical prowess with many of the family sorted into Ravenclaw. They rather ruthlessly disown any squib family members. Abraham grew up in this highly pressurised situation with the expectation to be sorted into either of these two houses and follow the tradition of many generations.
From a very young age he was taught how to behave properly during the many adult parties his parents threw often with the soul aim of boasting about the achievements of their children. His oldest brother, Jeremy, was sorted into Slytherin and played for the school team in the role of keeper. Kathleen was a Ravenclaw, prefect and managed to get a perfect 100% in five of her OWLs. Markus appeared to be a bit of a rebel and while he was sorted into Slytherin their parents never gave him much praise, even going so far as to forget him from the family newsletter one Christmas.
Clearly Abe caught a bit of this rebellious streak from his brother because he was the first member of his family to be sorted into Hufflepuff in nearly 5 generations on either side of the family. He was delighted to find a bit of freedom from his parents and siblings for the first time and quickly set about making friends. Abe also wanted to prove that being sorted into Hufflepuff was not a failure (as his parents had now left him off the family newsletter too). He joined the quidditch team as a substitute and played competitively as a chaser, even going up against his brother (who was a seventh year at the time) and coming out of it a little the worse for wear.
During his second year he suffered a bad knee injury by falling from his broom while trying to tackle the ball from the opposing team during a friendly match. He would have completely recovered, but instead of allowing his knee time to heal he got back on the broom and only did himself more damage until his head of house was forced to make him retire from the team. Abe the switched his focus to his studies, trying to take on his sister’s legendary intelligence. He spent the rest of his years at school studying as hard as he could and while he just fell short of her impressive OWLs score he managed to equal her when it came to NEWTs.
It seemed this hard working attitude finally got him noticed by his father and he was offered a apprenticeship at the family’s magical accounting firm for a year. During his time there his passion for Arithmancy grew and when he completed the apprenticeship he went into further study, writing several papers that got him a bit of a reputation in the field. Finally he decided to go into teaching and took up a teacher training course for a year so that his skills could be applied in the classroom. He got the job of Arithmancy professor at Hogwarts by writing persistent letters to Professor McGonagall every week for 3 months.
During his first year teaching at the school Abe got some of the best results out of his students in nearly 10 years. This and his enthusiasm for teaching eventually got him the role as Hufflepuff head of house, although he had to work away at McGonagall for 3 years before he succeeded. He’s been head of Hufflepuff for a year now and last year managed to push the badgers into second place for the house cup. He was told to tone down his pushy nature just a little this year as he was scaring some of the first years and had to be reminded at least four times that “looking scruffy” is not a misdemeanour worthy of points deduction in other houses most of the time.

Within the school Abe is liked well enough, he is popular among the more confident students, but can sometimes seem a little overbearing to the more shy and retiring ones.
Positive Traits:
- Trustworthy - Abe believes that people‘s secrets are their own to keep. If anybody chooses to confide in them he will do everything he can to take that secret to his grave with him. He is also reliable in that if he says he will do something it will always get done, his own perfectionist nature not allowing him to break his promises.
- Determined - Once Abe sets his mind on something he pursues it almost obsessively. He won’t make a rash decision, but if he’s mulled something over and made up his mind there is little anybody can do to stop him. As far as he’s concerned if everybody gave up as soon as they were told to stop none of the important breakthroughs in the magical world would ever have been made.
- Open - He doesn‘t hide what he is thinking and feeling from people. He’ll happily share opinions, ideas and advice with people, but he expects the same in return.
- Honest - Abe believes that lying never does anybody any good. When trying to achieve something a lie, however well meaning, can send a person in the wrong direction. He always tries to be honest with his students and encourages them to be honest with him.
- Competitive - He is obsessive about winning. Abe likes to be the best and won’t quit until he’s won. While it can make a competition more fun to be so invested in it, it can also be a little over the top. He has been known to take this need to win too far and he’s also a bit of a poor loser.
- Intelligent - Abe possesses a natural intelligence. He is quick witted and can draw on a seemingly endless number of facts that are stored away deep in his brain. He enjoys puzzles and spends a lot of time “exercising” his mind.
- Sociable - Abe enjoys company, he likes to talk and share his ideas with whoever will listen. His need to socialise is the only reason he hasn’t completely withdrawn into his work and become an insane recluse. He also believes he has some of his best moments of inspiration while bouncing his ideas off of other people.
- Patient - When it comes to teaching and research Abe has almost endless patience. He‘ll spend hours looking over a book with miniscule font just to find those couple of essential sentences needed to prove his theory and will try whatever is needed to help his students learn. This patience does not travel so easily into other aspects of his life.
- Dismissive - Once Abe has decided that something isn‘t worth his time he‘ll dismiss it without a backwards glance. Because he so often believes he is right he won’t accept other people’s side to the argument and it can be very difficult to get him to change his mind.
- Harsh - At times he takes the honesty he so often employs too far. He never tells white lies to save people’s feelings. The brutal truth of some of the things Abe says can lack tact and hurt people. Even those he considers friends.
- Arrogant - Even though he‘s always trying to improve himself Abe can be very arrogant. He’s had a lifetime of his parents spoiling him, his teachers telling him he was brilliant at school and his friends boosting his popularity and so at times he acts like he is better than other people. He does not like people to challenge his ideas and will often belittle them and then dismiss their worth.
- Holds a Grudge - Abe isn‘t one to get into a lot of fights and he generally tries to avoid conflict. However if you annoy him or get on his bad side he won‘t forget it. He’ll do everything he can to get revenge and if that means waiting a long time to do so then he’ll wait.
- Disorganised - Abe gets so wrapped up in his passion for his work that he becomes forgetful and scatterbrained. No matter how obsessively he plans a lesson the night before he always manages to forget something. Following a strict plan doesn’t really suit his teaching style anyway and so at times any kind of structure to his lessons is lacking.
- Uncompromising - As far as he‘s concerned compromise is a sign of weakness. Once he has set his mind to something he sees compromise as a failure. Abe really hates to fail at anything so he pursues his goals with persistence.
- Bad Tempered - Getting tired and pouring all his energy into his subject doesn‘t help his mood. Abe has been known to snap over the smallest of things and once he‘s ranting and angry it can be quite hard to calm him down.
Likes:
- Coffee - and essential part of his diet. Abe relies on his coffee to pick him up after strings of late nights.
- Wizard‘s Chess - The strategy required and his competitive nature make wizard‘s chess a perfect game for Abe to play. He’s won a few competitions and plays as often as he can.
- Honeydukes fudge - Abe doesn‘t have much of a sweet tooth, but if you‘re looking for something to bribe him with he has a weakness for Honeyduke‘s famous fudge.
- Fire Whiskey - He doesn‘t drink often but sometimes Abe relies on the alcohol to clear his head and just stop thinking for a while.
- Teaching - Abe was lucky enough to get a role teaching a subject he is really passionate about. He likes interacting with the students as he finds they often produce ideas even the top minds in the field haven‘t explored.
- The Daily Prophet - In his opinion the newspaper is reporting a load of melodramatic falsehoods and he does not like they way the reporters dig around in people‘s personal lives, twisting their words in order to find a story.
- Paperwork - He prefers debate and working verbally. Abe hates having to write up reports and his lessons always contain the very minimum of required theory work so he doesn’t have to do as much marking.
- Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans - He had a bad experience with the flavours as a child.
- Overly Quiet Students - Abe actively encourages the sharing of ideas in his classes and so he doesn‘t like it when students are too shy to contribute fully to the debate.
- Being Told No - Abe is often determined to the point of being stubborn, he won‘t take no for an answer. His dislike of being turned down may also come from being spoilt by his parents as a child.
- Hufflepuff Head of House - Abe had to do a lot of persuading to become head when his predecessor retired. He tries to know all the students in his house by name and works hard at encouraging them to win the house and quidditch cups, mainly because his house never won either competition when he was a student.
- Arithmancy - The subject that Abe is most passionate about. He sees numbers in all magic and believes strongly that it is the basis for most practical spells used every day.
Abe always has at least one class competition running. Often he puts up a difficult arithmancy puzzle up with the promise of house points to whichever student can solve it.
