The night was still and cold, the scent was easy to follow, though he didn’t need it as the direction was obvious. His quarry was heading back to the school, and he’d covered quite a lot of ground already. Even at a dead run, they were almost at the gates before he caught up.
Throwing subtlety to the wind, he didn’t even bother with a stealthy approach and sprinted up behind the boy. He was turning, hand reaching for something in his jacket but Dacian was on him in a flash. He snatched the wand the boy had just bore and threw it to the ground. Without wasting a moment, he grabbed him in a barely breathable headlock and dragged him from the path and into the fringe of woods.
This was not an ordinary hunt, oh no. This boy had hurt Vivian. He’d made blood-stained tears well in her eyes, and as the girl was too much of a soft heart to do this herself, Dacian was going to make sure Scott knew what a horrific mistake he had made. It was a little hypocritical of the vampire, as he’d done almost exactly the same thing in his youth, but that was a little detail he did not readily share.
Once he deemed they were far enough from the path, Dacian hefted the taller boy and pinned his back to a sturdy tree. They were out of sight from any person walking past – of which he could hear none – so there was enough light filtering through that the boy would see Dacian’s bared teeth had a distinct point to them. Dacian had forced the heel on his hand under the boy’s jaw, holding his mouth shut and using the same hold to pin Scott’s head to the tree. Without his wand, the young wizard was defenceless, and Dacian needed little excursion to hold him.
With a growl as the prefix to every sentence, Dacian made his point known. “You remember me? I saved Vivian when you failed.” His smile was simply malicious. “You’ve hurt her, Scott. I won’t stand for that.”

All the way from the pub’s door Scotty had been grappling the urge to run back to Vivian, to beg for her forgiveness and tell her he was sorry over and over again. He’d been a fool and now he was paying for it. For what seemed like the thousandth time the boy kicked himself for ever drinking one drop of that cursed firewhiskey. Well now he’d never again touch a drop of the stuff, all it did was bring pain and misery; the tears rolling down Scotty’s cheek served as a reminder of that.
It could not be fathomed how much the boy did not want to go back to Hogwarts. There he’d only find the rumours that were floating about and, more importantly, Fin. As much as he hated the fact that someone had spotted him fleeing from the Room of Requirement, half dressed and Fin not far behind him, he hated more that whenever he saw the girl now it hurt. She was the embodiment of the gigantic mistake he’d made and a friendship that he’d ruined.
As Scotty walked in home in the darkness, the visit to Vivian played over in his head. It had been obvious how much his bombshell had hurt her and that only made him want to stop and wail. Why couldn’t he turn back time and take back what he’d done? The simple answer was that time-turners were expensive and impractical unless you were Hermione Granger. Now Viv would never speak to him again and would probably break his nose if he tried to tell her how much he loved her.
As he neared the school gates movement behind him caught to boy’s attention. At once he reached for his wand but before he could draw it, it was snatched away and he was being dragged towards the forest in a headlock. Desperately he struggled and tried to stay calm as he did so. It wasn’t long before he was lifted with, what he deemed as, supernatural strength. For a split second Scotty thought Vivian had come after him but he knew she’d never be this violent and that she wasn’t the obviously male vampire that was currently holding him up against a tree.
Dacian.
Viv had told the boy about her sire; the one who’d both saved her and damned her. Before he’d had the chance to meet him he’d apparently been killed but whoever had obviously survived. ”I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. It was a stupid mistake, a drunken mistake,” Scotty tried to choke out, noting that it sounded as pathetic as it did when he’d said almost the exact words to Vivian. Well now he was going to pay for what he’d done from the angry father, an angry father who could eat him or break every bone in his body if he wanted to.

You’ve made the mistake and now you’re going to pay for it.” He snarled, eyes flashing angrily. “Didn’t mean to? Of course you meant to. You can’t blame alcohol for what you did. It was in your mind to do it anyway, you would have hurt her sooner or later.”
He leaned in closer, wishing not for the first time he was tall enough to loom. He felt a little pang of hunger as the thud of the boy’s pulse was closer. He used it to his advantage, letting the boy see what level of trouble he was in. “Actions speak louder than words. And what you did deafened her. I’ll kill you for this. You’re a thorn in her side. You stop her from growing. You insist on clinging to her when she needs to move on.” It was a lie, Dacian was not going to kill the boy, but he didn’t need to know that just yet.
“Congratulations; You’ll never make a mistake ever again.” He pulled the boy’s collar away from his neck and lunged. It was more of a chore than usual to stop himself just before his fangs pierced the skin. He was hungry, and his stomach churned in anticipation. The idea was to scare the boy out of his wits, make him squirm, make him beg. Make him want to do anything other than see Vivian again.

Everything Dacian had said Scotty had been expecting to hear. It was predictable but not in the boring sense, it would be what he’d say if a daughter of his was every cheated on by a dead beat boyfriend. Scotty didn’t answer the angry vampire; instead he hung his head in defeat and shame. He had failed Vivian yet again and had nothing or no one to blame but himself. Alcohol may have been a factor but he shouldn’t have been drinking in the first place, he should have been responsible and known better.
”Fine, do it but would Vivian want it? No she wouldn’t!” Scotty spoke up suddenly, almost encouraging Dacian to bite him. Really he didn’t care what the vampire did to him, death would be a welcome relief from the near unbearable guilt and the pain of a broken heart. ”I am a thorn in her side, I doubt she’ll ever want to see me again now,” the boy said, his voice once again soft and sad. Everything Dacian had said was true and it heart more than any bite to hear.
At the final threat Scotty came to terms that he was more than likely going to die. It wouldn’t be a very good move on the vampire’s part; Aurors would swarm the place, arrest him and then Viv again would be left without her sire. Really he should have voiced that opinion but instead the Gryffindor eyed Dacian and tilted his neck as his collar was torn away. The boy jumped when the man lunged but he did not try to escape. Instead he closed his eyes and braced himself for the pain that was sure to come, but it didn’t. There was no bite, no fangs tearing through flesh but there was a vampire mere centimetres from his skin.
”Why did you stop? Please just let me go, I promise to do what you ask. If you kill me it will just hurt Viv more; she doesn’t want you to be a murderer.” Scotty begged at once but he wasn’t begging for his life, no, he was begging to save sire and daughter’s relationship.

I know that killing you would hurt Vivian. Even with this instinct to feed, I can resist, because I have the self control.” He bit off the last two words poignantly.
“You’re right about one thing. She never does want to see you again, and you will stay away from her. You will not visit her, you will not write to her. You will not come to Hogsmeade during the dark, and you will not pass close to the Hogs Head. If I catch so much as a whiff of you in the village, I will kill you, and I know how to hide a murder.” He was pushing on the underside of the boy’s chin, baring his throat in an instinctual move.
The vampire ran his tongue over his teeth and he leaned in close again. “Now, I am very hungry, and you are a convenient meal. You’ll live, but I will not be kind. You hurt Vivian, and this is the least I can do to return the favour.” Clamping Scott’s jaw shut to prevent more blabbering, Dacian pinned him firmly against the tree and bit down low between his neck and shoulder where the blood would flow slower. He was careful to keep much of his numbing saliva from the wound, so Scott would feel every painful moment.

With the way Dacian was looking at him, Scotty could very much believe how hungry the vampire was. In fact, there was no doubt as to how hungry he was so why had he asked such a stupid question. Wow, what an inappropriate time to be thinking something like that, here at the end of his life. Instead of fangs, the vampire’s words cut at him like a knife as well as made him feel slightly relieved; he was going to live and Vivian wouldn’t be losing her sire but still the final words about self control hurt more than a bite could.
Scotty let out a small ragged breath, trying hard not to weep, at the news Vivian no longer wanted to ever see him but God he wanted to see her. He could understand where Dacian was coming from but the boy couldn’t help but feel the vampire was being unreasonable in his terms. Still, he had no choice but to follow him as the selfish desire to keep his own life flared. He nodded to let the man know he understood before asking quietly, ”will you let me go now?”
The Gryffindor had his answer as the man leaned in close, his words menacing and callous. ”No! Plea-“ before he could finish begging pathetically a cold hand clamped Scott’s jaw firmly shut and at last he felt fangs slice through the flesh of his neck. There was nothing he could do, he could even scream at the pain but Christ almighty it hurt. Desperately the boy tried to squirm free but that only made things worse for himself. There was no escaping this now, just like there was no escaping what he’d done to Viv.
