As it was, he looked fairly amused with the bartender, and not in a good way. “You think a couple of scrapes makes you worldly? What have you even seen of the world? You might have seen scenery and monuments, but until you’ve seen war, famine, plague, you are not worldly.” He hissed, eyes blazing. Compared to Dacian, Edward lived in the lap of luxury. He had his own home and business, and Dacian slept in a cave in the forest. He could talk about Dacian’s high horse, but Edward was looking down on him from one higher.
And then the boy’s shouting turned personal, and Dacian locked down. His stony expression met the words with indifference, and it was a good thing he’d been expecting it because the jibes about Cassie would have prompted him to drive the point of his sword through Edward’s chest and out the other side.
He knew in the back of his mind that he was the one that caused the people around him trouble by his being there, but he was damned if he was going to leave, or dwell on the fact. Edward could stomp and scream all he liked, but Dacian knew for certain who was more stubborn.
The vampires eyes narrowed at talk of Silas. He’d have thought Edward might drop whatever grudge he had with him in favour of running after the black wizard right now. Dacian knew he would. Vengeance was high on his list of things to do, but higher powers interfered. It only confirmed his suspicions: Edward was a coward, and he had too much fondness for Silas. Either he still didn’t believe he was behind all of what happened that day, or he knew already, because he helped to plan it.
Just as he was about to voice his cleverly deduced idea, the sound of hurrying feet reached him and he dropped his sword just as Cassandra burst into the room. He felt that familiar and unwanted flush of warmth, followed by dread and the niggling urge to run. Cassie was not exactly frightening in her petite and agreeable package, but what she represented to the vampire was. A weakness, and a link to all the mistakes he’d rather forget. Like having his neck broken.
Yes, it was true. and every goddamn minute was burned into his memory like a video on repeat. It was one of the most frightening experiences of his life, and he did not care to relive it for the curiosity of some woman. His lip curled, and he backed up a step. She was sorry? These humans and their apologies. Sorry never saved anyone.
Thankfully his legs knew how to handle the situation, and they were backpedalling toward the still open door fast. He broke his gaze from the blond to check Vivian. There was no detaching her from Edward any day soon, so he left her with him and fled the pub.
What else had he expected when he went there? He knew she had been there, and some part of him wanted to see her. But self preservation won out. Being near to Cassie put a fault in his judgement. He needed to get over her and fast. Would a good drink do? Or would that only complicate matters further? He’d tasted her before, and it only made him ravenous for more. Maybe blood was the problem, not the solution. But she did taste so good...
A dark figure drew his attention to the present, and he knew Vivian would be safe until sunrise. Samuel was watching, as he had been for the last month. The older vampire nodded once in Dacian’s direction, and he knew he would have to defend himself when Samuel caught up with him about tonight’s little stunt. He wasn’t supposed to have made himself known to anybody but Vivian, and Samuel would be quick to remind him.

”Excuse me if I haven’t lived for six hundred years. I may not meet your standards of wordly but I have seen more in my twenty years than most people see in a life time and most of it is thanks to you,” Edward quipped back. This fruitless arguing had gone quickly off topic. First it had been simply about Vivian and now it was scathingly personal. All of Dacian’s remarks, no matter how he tried to shrug them off, had cut the Australian. All the feelings of insecurity and worthlessness were flooding back through the walls Ed had put up.
Cassie’s voice did not help matters at all. It felt too much like a few months ago; doubt over his own abilities and Cassie’s love once again fresh in the bartender’s mind. He turned swiftly and said softly, ”Cassie, how were you to know? He looked dead, he was dead. There was no way to tell otherwise.” By the time he’d finished his sentence and glanced back around to where the vampire had stood, the creature was gone. ”What the fuck?” the man cursed to himself. The realisation that Dacian was gone hit him like truck.
Emotion after emotion wracked Ed as he once again turned to look at Cassie. All he could do was shake his head and hold onto Vivian almost for support. ”I’m going to bed, I can’t deal with this anymore Cassie. I can’t deal with him coming in here and I can’t deal with the fact he loves you. I can’t help but feel everything I thought I’d gotten past with you and just everything. I’m tired, Cassie,” the man lamented with a sigh as he stalked past the girl towards the staircase.

All of the arguments were only half sinking into Vivian’s head. There was shouting and loud voices and now she had no idea just who exactly she should be supporting. Dacian had his fair points, as well as grossly unfair statements, and so did Ed. It was far easier just to cling to Ed’s arm and hope this’d all blow over, but by the time Dacian whipped out the sword she was half expecting she was on the verge of witnessing a murder-suicide rampage.
And then Cassie came downstairs and Vivian didn’t even know what happened. Dacian sort of locked up and then... he was gone. He was gone. Dacian had left the building and... He was gone. Vivian exhaled loudly, suddenly realising that she hadn’t breathed even once during the entire confrontation.
Edward detached himself from her and walked up to Cassie like she was the only person left in the room. Vivan watched dejectedly as he said his goodnight to his girlfriend and walked up the stairs. She vaguely wondered what she’d done to be ignored before mentally slapping herself. Of course. Edward had had a long night and... he needed rest.
Alone with Cassie now, Vivian attempted to give the woman a look like she understood, but she got the feeling she just looked pained. It was fine, it was all going to be okay. She’d act like she was alright and once she made sure Cassie was okay and then... and then sleep, probably? What was there left to do? She’d just have to read until she knocked herself out. At least Cassie hadn’t been forced to watch a man get his face knocked in, so she’d be alright.
“Are you okay?” she asked, trying and failing to sound stronger than she was feeling. The answer was a definite no. WHY would Cassie be feeling okay? This was all her fault – if she had of told Dacian not to see Cassie then... argh! She took a few steps closer, looking rather miserable. “I don’t sink anyone vos expecting that...”
Well no shit Sherlock.

Dacian didn’t say a word and it felt uncannily like their initial reunion, all the uncertainty rushing back to her and only adding to the guilt she was feeling, only this time she knew who she was facing and it served to make his silence hurt all the more. Cassie almost missed the raised voices of a few moments ago. She shouldn’t have intervened, it had been exactly the wrong thing to do; the latest in an endless stream of mistakes and bad choices. Her presence seemed to make Dacian clam up and it only hurt Ed more to see her upset over another man again.
As usual Ed came to her aid, reassuring her and easing the guilt she was probably supposed to feel. ”I know,” She agreed with him quietly, remembering all too clearly how Dacian had seemed that night. ”But...” Cassie pressed her lips together before she could express her doubts, Dacian’s accusations from earlier that evening echoing in her head. He was a vampire; of course he’d seemed dead. They should have done more; she’d been selfish to let Ed carry her away from the shack. But that would just be a rehash of the same arguments she’d had with Ed many times before and it wasn’t fair to put him through it again. He might be patient with her, but that patience couldn’t possibly be endless.
Thankfully Dacian’s disappearing act was a suitable distraction and she couldn’t help but feel a flare of anger that he’d turned tail and run again. There were still questions that needed answering and, in light of what she’d overheard, the top of that list was exactly what Silas’s involvement had been during that fateful night. It seemed Ed hadn’t been quite as distracted, though, and she winced at his parting words. Without him there the room felt suddenly cold, her shoulders slumping in defeat as she crossed her arms to try and suppress a shiver.
It took her a moment to remember that she wasn’t alone and Cassie almost flinched in surprise when Vivian spoke to her. ”I’m fine,” She assured flatly, her voice listless and entirely unconvincing. This wasn’t a moment to wallow in self pity, Vivian was only fifteen, she shouldn’t be the one supporting them, they should be caring for her. ”I’m sorry Vivian.” She said, managing a wavering and apologetic smile. ”You shouldn’t have had to hear all that.” If she couldn’t even look after a fairly self-sufficient fifteen year old how was she supposed to care for a totally dependent baby?
Her hand went to her stomach then she shot Vivian a quick look. ”You know, moments like this call for ice cream, I’m pretty sure Ed ordered in some of that blood flavoured sorbet. Shall we go check?” Cassie ushered Vivian in the direction of the kitchens, casting a quick spell over her shoulder to float the upended barstools back into place. She might not be ready for motherhood, but she’d just have to do her best. And when all else failed bribing with ice cream seemed like a safe bet.
