The heady scent of old paper wafted up from the old textbook upon the desk, making Steph feel a little drowzy. She knew of so many people who love this lesson, thought it to be the highlight of their timetable, but she couldn't stand it. To Steph, Defense Against The Dark Arts was a way of glorifying duel magic, and a way of getting students to enter that part of the Ministry that fought "evil". The name escaped Steph, partly because she couldn't pronounce it.
Yes, it was possibly useful learning how to defend oneself against the darker side of life. But that was also true in Muggle schools and it wasn't mandatory for them to attend Defense Classes. The girl sighed, proping her head up by resting her chin on her hand. A bored expression littered her face as she thought of all the better places to be. Care of Magical Creatures or Potions, if she was to take a class route; bed or a bath, if she was to take the indulgence route. She hadn't had a good bath in ages.
The teacher - another name she'd forgotten - indicated that the class should work in pairs. On what, she had no idea. Steph had a habit of not listening when she didn't care. (Not that the inability to care stopped her, she rarely listening Potions nowadays.) Turning to the nearest person to her, a red-headed Hufflepuff, Steph put on a bright smile. "Partners?" She asked, the image of friendliness. "What we doing?" She shouldn't have asked, but she needed to else the poor girl would possibly have been singed by a stray spell. She hoped the cheery nature would let her get away with it.

Pairs? Oh no, Jessica thought as the rest of the class stood up. Social interaction. Not only did she not want to be around people, she didn't want her face to be seen. Most likely her eyes would appear sunken, as studying normally did this to her. The Arithmancy teacher had told her to study hard for the exam, as she was the best student. Jessica might've taken it to literally.
The blond sitting next to her's aura nearly put her to sleep. It was bright and happy, despite the boredom that played across her face. Jessica pointedly ignored her and turned her attention back to the teacher.
After a couple of minutes, the blond's air of brightness had gotten to her, Jessica turned towards her and stood up, paying close attention to the teacher, hoping the girl would get the message. When he only turned his back to the class to write something on the board, Jessica looked at her and said, "my guess is we're practicing stunning spells, seeing as that's what the essay we wrote last night was about. Sure, I'll be your partner. God knows, I need a friendly face around here." Jessica added the last bit with a hopefully cute half smile.

It was a breath of fresh air to see that the red-haired girl next to her seemed about as thrilled with the partner work as she was. Too many people were too peppy in this lesson - though, she had to act that way right now. It wasn't that Steph minded being peppy - Hell she normally was! - but this lesson, Defense Against the bloody Dark Arts, just drained it out of her. It was all just a little too complicated for Steph's liking - she liked things simple. Potions, simple (well it was to her anyway), Care of Magical Creatures, simple (so long as you didn't annoy the magical creatures) and indulging in herself, so simple it was almost painful.
It irked her a little though that the red-head next to her was trying to ignore her. Why? What was so horrible about her? So she'd asked what they were doing, something she should know because well she should listen, it wasn't like she'd told the girl she wanted to murder kittens. That would just be weird and gross - all that constituted for ignoring someone. The annoyance she felt evporated when this girl seemed to play along. It occured to Steph that she should possibly know her, now, partner's name seen as how they'd sat next to each other for most of the school year - but Steph was never one for names. Which she had just proved by not knowing her teacher's name.
Stunning spells? Steph groaned a little, but tried to cover it. Stunning spells were the worst! They hurt, they made her ache and they were outwardly violent. Steph didn't mind violence, so long as it wasn't aimed at her. That's why she was a Beater on the Quidditch team, she was the one being violent - which she whole-heartedly condoned. "There was an essay last night?" She asked, before realising she had. Admitting that you hadn't done the homework never really won people over. "Cool!" She turned up the brightness, hoping to distract the girl - Tess something? - from the fact that she really did have no clue what she was doing. "Go easy on me, yeah? Tess, is it?"

Jessica, my name is Jessica, she thought irritably. Honestly it did sound a bit like "Tess" but she had never gone by "Jess," only her family calls her that. Jessica raised an eyebrow at the girl next to her and cocked a corner of her mouth upward in a challenging smile, despite the annoyance she felt. Go easy, huh? Sure. Stunning was one of her areas of prowess.
Slowly Jessica raised her wand and looked up at her but paused when she saw just how beautiful the girl was. Her hair was just a tone different from her own and her eyes were a dark brown. She growled inwardly in envy as her eyes traveled her thin waist, easy posture and air of jaunty simplicity. Jessica sighed and turned her eyes away.
Yes. She was gorgeous and as always, Jessica was envious. Her mother had always told her she was beautiful but that was always while she was doing something else. Beautiful as this girl was, Jessica hoped that her hair was ruffled after her Stunning Spell. "Stupefy[/i]," Jessica said softly, letting the power of the spell run through her. "Easy enough for you?" Jessica said, grinning.

Being the self-involved girl she was, Steph didn't really care if the girl's name was Jess, Tess or Larry. Just so long as her spells didn't hurt, then Steph would be ok. Somehow, from the challenging look on Tess' (or Jess' or Larry's) face Steph got the impression that she wouldn't. Though, ever the optimist, Steph believed that the girl would take pity on her - she was too pretty to hurt! And she was nice... Most of the time, to most people. She wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight either way - her spell skills were all but useless.
As she got into position, Steph flicked her long, brown hair over her shoulder. Around her she saw other girls tie up their hair, but she hated tying her hair up. She'd styled her hair purposefully that morning - the messy yet stylish look - and a hair bobble would certainly ruin that. In her distraction, Steph missed any sign of envy on Tess'/Jess'/Larry's face and she missed the tell tale signs of an incoming spell. The first Steph knew of it was the whisper of "Stupefy." The fact that her partner had spoken quietly didn't help matters.
Next thing she knew, Steph was being hurled backwards and landing oh so gracefully on her bum. "Hey!" She said while the shock was still fresh. Soon the scowl filled her face, "That was not 'going easy on me'." She scrambled to her feet, pulling her wand out of her robe pocket as did so. Her lacking of co-ordination made her a little clumsy, the wand almost falling from her grip at least once. Steph got there in the end, a determined look on her face as she mirrored the spell. Only thing is, Steph's aim is about as shot as her grace (how she made it to be a successful beater she'll never know) and so she had no idea if her spell landed on her target. The fact that she had her eyes closed also didn't help matters.

Jessica nearly burst out laughing from the sight she was seeing. How in the world did that girl think she would ever hit anything with her eyes closed? The jet of red light soared past Jessica and she looked down, a half smile on her lips. It definitely seemed that reading extensively does help.
Her smile growing wider, Jessica looked up as she raised her wand. "I'm Jessica, by the way. But, seeing as I'm evidently not a mind reader, I wouldn't know yours."
Without saying another word, Jessica fired another Stunning Spell in her direction. Really this subject was one of her main classes but she knew too much already about the dark arts to ever truly enjoy the class and it often let her down, because if there's a countercurse, Jessica will know the curse that counters it.

When she opened her eyes, Steph saw the amused look on her partner's face and was a little annoyed. Of course, Steph's spell had missed her target by a long shot. Even if her target had been the wall behind Jess/Tess/Larry. She was a little impressed to see the spell stains on the window. She couldn't have done that even if she'd tried! Being silently smug about her shot, Steph sized up her opponant - waiting to see her next move. Steph didn't actually know what she was looking for - other than the obvious raised wand and the shouted, or whispered, command.
Seeing the wand raised, Steph braced herself - she did not want to land on her bum again. There was only so much her padded posterior could take. After Jess/Tess/Larry spoke, Steph raised her eyebrows. "What?" Steph was too confused to notice that the other girl fired a spell without even saying a word. As the spell hit her square in the chest (and she fell to the floor, again) Steph wondered if that was even possible. She clutched where the spell hit, breathing deeply. She hated this class. And she was beginning to dislike this girl just as much. A dark look brushed over Steph's face as she managed to scramble up. If only she knew a really good spell to fire back. If only she had the aim.
"How did you do that? Fire a spell without speaking?" Whilst waiting for her answer, Steph scrawled through her mind for the prank spells a friend had taught her. She deemed it time to ditch the textbook spells and onto one that would get her into trouble. Trouble may take her away from Larry. (She'd given up on calling the girl all three, she looked like a Larry to Steph.) "Levicorpsus!" Steph called, this time keeping her eyes open as she fired the spell. Meaning this time, it hit her target. A smile spread on her lips as she waited for the desired results - to see the red head suspended in the air by her foot. That might knock her down a peg.
((Hey, I had an idea - they could get into detention together and bicker some more! XD))

Jessica actually chuckled. Not at anything this girl has said, no most of that has been pretty brainless, but at what she was doing. "By the way, its Levicorpus, and its also nonverbal, which is clearly not your strongest area of Defense." She wasn't trying to sound mean, she was just trying to make her see where she was going wrong.
Okay, she had to give the poor thing credit; Levicorpus was not a well-known spell, and really not the easiest but still...This'll sound kind of hypocritical, but Jessica did want to become friends with this girl, but the girl wasn't making it very easy. She wouldn't even tell her her name and that's normally the first thing you know about a person.
Of course, she wasn't the most social person. No, with Tom's absence, she kept to herself, but there was something about this girl that brought out this side of her. She'd never been paired with someone this uncooperative. Normally Jessica's partners were determined to take her down after she took them down in the first go. For some odd reason that she could find, this girl seemed determined to get detention.
And sure enough, (Speak of the devil she thought), looking around, the teacher stood behind her, arms crossed.
Oops.
