It was a dark, dreary night that Ryan set foot in the Forbidden Forest. It had been one of those nights again, where he couldn't sleep and sat up in the Common Room all night, watching the fire. Sometimes Marius would come down, and they'd talk until the world awoke around them. Sometimes he was alone, drawing or reading or finishing up some homework. And sometimes, when he was feeling like this, when he just couldn't stay inside, he fled to the forest.
It was almost his second home, the place where he felt safest. The animals didn't care how weird he was, as long as he treated them right. Why couldn't everything in the world be this easy? Why couldn't he just live his life and not be overtaken by this paralyzing mood swings that left him feeling so low he considered jumping into the Lake. Either that or hurting himself in another way, but he wasn't quite stupid enough for that. Not yet. Not anymore since he had his medication.
So he fled instead, running as fast and as far as his legs could carry him in the chilly air, wrapping arms around a tree as he came to a halt. If only he could run from his mind. If only he could escape this dread, this feeling of always fucking up no matter what would happen in the future.
If only he wasn't Ryan Robins.

As she did every night, Steph stood between the tall trees of the Forbidden Forest waiting for Darius to take his fill. She normally went at dusk, but she'd been cooped up in detention again for her lacking of homework. She'd have been ok had she not told the teacher what she really thought of Charms homework. "How does writing an essay on a spell make me learn it?" Bad move. Next time she'd just keep her mouth shut and do the first hundred lines, rather than give herself nine hundred more. Her wrist was still cramping now.
She shivered, worrying a little about her very tiny bat. He would be but a snack for an owl. Steph hoped he came back soon. It broke her heart every time one of her pets died or - on very rare occasions - ran away. She treated her pets with the utmost care, always consulting the experts before even getting the animal. Not knowing how to care for an animal was almost as bad as treating one poorly by Stephanie's books.
Her worry vanished as the familiar little fuzz ball landed expertly in the depths of her hair. She giggled as his little paws tickled the back of her neck. "Had your fill?" She asked as she stroked the mircobat. It was high time she left the chilly forest, it right creeped her out during the day let alone at night! Turning on her heels, Steph made her way back to the castle. She made sure she turned 180 degrees before she even took a step forward. It ws how she made it out in one piece - walking in a straight line and then turning round to walk that exact same line. Else she'd still be wandering round from the first time she went into the forest.
On her way back she saw the oddest thing. A boy was running like the clappers until he got to a tree, and decided to hug it. She stopped in her tracks and stared at the boy, one eyebrow raised. "Why did you just run into a tree?" She asked, the same expression still on her face. "Are you one of these people who believe that we should all hug trees because they have less issues than people?" Steph had met a lot of weird people in her life, but she wouldn't have thought any of them would run into a tree.

Ryan groaned when he heard a girl speak behind him. "Why did you just run into a tree?" He turned towards her slightly, dark eyes taking her in. "I did not just run into a tree." His voice was slightly cold, which really couldn't be helped right about now. It wasn't a good time for anyone to be around him, let alone people who thought they could mock him.
"Are you one of these people who believe that we should all hug trees because they have less issues than people?"
Despite himself, he almost smiled. In a sense, she had a point. Trees did have less issues. At least, if he had been a tree, and had the same issues as he had now but without the chance to run away? God, that would suck. And to have random people hug you? Ryan snorted softly to himself, turning towards the girl a little more. "No, I was just sick of being around people and figured that at least trees don't talk." There was no edge to his voice anymore, it was merely a drawl, not unkind in the slightest.

Steph raised an eyebrow. "Grumpy chuff." She muttered to herself. She was only trying to be funny, make light - that was what she did. She wasn't going to pick a fight though, that was really petty - especially when she didn't even know the tree hugging hippy. Now if she got to know him and then found she despised him, well then it'd be fights galore. But she wasn't about to go into this hating him. Steph liked to have friends, no matter who they were.
She pounced on the smile, grinning back at him. "That's better!" Bounding over, she crossed the gap which had separated them. The forest creeped her out enough as it was, yelling just made her more nervous. Who knows what nasties would wake up if she yelled. Steph liked animals, but only when she was safe. She wouldn't exactly try to pet something that wanted to eat her. Not without the proper training that is. "I don't know about that."
She mused a moment, thinking of all those poems and songs declaring that wind through the leaves was whispering trees. "I think there are a fair few people who would disagree with you on that one." She smiled brightly. "I reckon they're gossiping about us right now." She held up a finger for silence, listening to the wind whistle through the leaves. She wore a goonish grin on her face - with no shame - and finished, "See what I mean?"
She took a moment to take in the person before her. Although it was dark she could make out his pale skin and long-ish hair. If he wasn't so grumpy, she'd go as far as to say he was kind of cute. In the sense that she wanted to ruffle his hair. "I'm Steph." She announced, offering out a hand to shake.

Ryan grimaced at her comments, though she was definitely improving his mood. So, letting go of the tree, he turned to face her, finding she'd come a lot closer than he'd expected. "Ryan" He shook her head, giving her a smile. "I didn't mean to be so unkind, I just wasn't in the best of moods." But like always it could be turned around in a mere matter of seconds. Perhaps it was't such a bad thing to have Stephanie pouncing on him and making him smile. It certainly made things a lot easier.
"So, say they are gossiping, what would they say?" They would probably make this into a romantic rendez-vous. Even if they were wrong, they could be right. The girl was very pretty.

There was something about this boy. Every smile just seemed so... forced. Like it went against his nature, or his mood or something. His mood did certainly feel un-smile worthy. Which Steph didn't really understand. She loved to smile. It was just so uplifting, and smiling for no reason was apparently cookey, which was always good. Originality was a blessing and should be embraced and so forth. She loved the way she was. And no one seemed to be friendly anymore, well not so much as before anyway - apparently. She often turned off when her parents talked about the past - too much aincient history!
"Hello Ryan." She waved her hand about again, signalling that he should shake it. They were meeting for the first time - her pa always said it was important to shake someone's hand when first meeting them. Ok, so there was a slight difference between the people they were meeting. Her pa often met important music business people or potential artists, and she was meeting some kid from her school - but the principle still stood. "We all get into pets. You just have to get out of them when in company. Public pets aren't the best of ideas." She gave a wise nod before breaking out into a bright grin - a happy cheery grin, because that was what she was like, happy and cheery.
"The trees?" She mused, this was her chance to be creative. Steph loved being creative, because what was life without creativity? History lectures, that's what. Or Arithmancy. Stephanie's favourite pasttimes were making new potions (which often ended up as explosions) and writing lyrics. Lyrics were a brilliant way of expressing how she felt - maybe Ryan could do with having a go, he seriously looked like he had issues - and she wrote them about anything and everything. From angsting against teachers to comparing relationships to that collection of sickles that were still in the bathroom.
She laughed. "Well, I'm not fluent in tree, but I think that one's saying, 'Ahh! Get this creepy kid off me!'." She giggled and paused a moment, pretending to listen to another tree's response. She was going to make this as silly as possible. "Ha-ha! That chunky one said, 'Oo, he can come hug me if he wants.'" She chuckled at her own silly voices, Steph was easily amused. "The rest of them are just talking about me, discussing how lovely and brilliant I am." She was glad she had made this whole thing go a little silly. There was something in Ryan's voice she was alarmed by.
Not that she was scared he was going to make a pass at her. She just didn't want him to. He was nice enough to look at, but... No. He wasn't her type. What her type was, she didn;t know. And he was also older than her, she presumed - he wasn't in any of her classes and he certainly didn't look younger than her. She just hoped this budding friendship didn't get ruined by false interpretations - she was like this with everyone. Honestly! Not that she was flirting hussy, she was just friendly. Your friendly neighbourhood friend-type-person.
