Introducing...
Name:
Charles Patrick Jones, but he prefers Charlie.
Age:
19th September; about to turn fifteen.
Gender:
Male.
Year:
Fifth.
Birthplace:
Newport, Wales.
Ethnicity:
Caucasian.
Blood:
Muggleborn.
Relatives:
None attending Hogwarts, although his family is as follows:
Pets:
Charlie has the dubious pleasure of owning a black and white tomcat called Fargo. Fargo is an extremely timid cat and frequently jumps at his own shadow, meaning he's an absolute nightmare around groups of people, and he's also very lazy. He expects to be given food on the hour, every hour, and has no problem waking Charlie up in the middle of the night for a snack. He only goes outside to chase mice, spending the rest of his time sleeping either at the end of Charlie's bed (or occasionally on Charlie's pillow, meaning he doesn't get it back for a few days), eating, or lounging around the common room, rubbing up against the few people he knows and trusts to give him a petting. He likes to sit on Charlie's lap and scratch through the boy's trousers, but the cat means well.
Wand Type:
Charlie's wand is seven and one-quarter inches long, made from the elder tree. It contains three hairs from the merfolk off the coast of England somewhere.
The elder tree is renowned for its healing properities, as well as promoting creativity and renewal. Charlie has no idea what properties merfolk hair has, but he hopes it might help him become a better swimmer one day.
Appearance
Picture:
Hair Colour:
Dark brown.
Eye Colour:
Brown.
Build:
Skinny and rather weedy. He isn't overweight, in fact he's a bit thinner than is probably healthy, but it works with his height anyway.
Skin Tone:
Pale. He spends far too much time indoors because he's scared something bad will happen, like he'll get the flu and be stuck in bed for a week.
Height:
5' 6" and counting.
Dress Style:
Charlie wears plain t-shirts and jeans when not in school uniform, never bothering to iron anything and preferring to be scruffy out of sheer laziness. His uniform is also fairly unkempt; his shirt is never tucked in, his tie is always done up badly because he could never get the hang of it, and he never brushes his hair as a rule – it tends to get messed up quickly anyway, so what's the point? He always wears a pair of tatty, previously white but now simply dirty trainers, although he has been told off for this – in recent years he has taken to wearing trousers that are too long for him to cover them up, although the result is having material trail behind him as the trousers get worn out under his feet.
Specifics:
A scar on his elbow from the car accident mentioned in the Boggart section. The break itself was fairly clean, but the impact had caused it to jut out of his skin, creating a lot of mess and a lot of pain. The skin never healed cleanly, and left a long silvery scar from just above his elbow to two inches below it, curving around his arm from the very back to stop almost on the inner arm. He also has several scars on his hands from playing with Fargo, as the cat had very sharp claws and Charlie could never resist picking at the scabs that formed until they scarred.
In Front Of Friends
Sexual Orientation:
Bisexual, not that he knows it. He's generally too scared of people to think about things like that.
Self Image:
Charlie really isn't very impressed with himself, overall. His self confidence is lacking, but no more so than most teenagers, and he puts himself under immense pressure to do well in school in order to make his father happy (after all, how many Muggles can say their son has gone off to train to be a wizard? More than Charlie's dad thinks, but that's beside the point). As he isn't a particularly gifted student in the art of spell-casting, he tends to scold himself and put himself down a fair bit, but this is usually counteracted by congratulating himself on making yet another good potion. He doesn't like to admit he's good at things, thinking that doing so is rather big headed, but he can't help himself when he's actually achieved something; he bounces around grinning, just telling people that nothing is the matter when they ask why he's so happy.
Charlie is fairly accident prone, unfortunately, which doesn't help his self-esteem, and he's terrible around girls. He knows he has an odd sense of humour, and he doesn't feel like he fits in because he still adores his sci-fi shows, despite having been thrust into a distinctly fantasy world. He tries to avoid talking to lots of different people as he either rambles and makes a fool of himself, or says the wrong thing and insults someone, but when he does have to he is generally friendly, and doesn't hold a grudge if they've done something to him previously. He also tends to feel very much a child still, and reveals a childish inquisitiveness over new things, as well as sometimes not getting what other people are saying. He doesn't think he's simple minded, he just thinks he hasn't grown up yet. Overall, he doesn't like himself very much, but how many teenagers really like themselves? He simply thinks he's a little bit inadequate and he's a bit paranoid about things, but he deals with it.
To the Outward Eye:
Charlie is fairly short and weedy for a boy his age, so most people either tend to ignore him or consider the best way to beat him up. He tends to walk around with his head down, looking at the ground and avoiding eye contact unless he's with friends, so people would probably assume he's shy or being sneaky. He walks very quickly and always appears to be a little bit nervous. He's also very scruffy, so the “upper class” tend to ignore him on the basis that he looks a bit common.
Social Status:
Charlie is not ranked very highly amongst most of his fellow students, as he is a bit of a geek and, apart from his notes and his Potions, not a very able student. For the most part he is ignored, although a few of the meaner students quite like to pick on him because he's an easy target who doesn't fight back. Most of his teachers seem to like him as he's quiet, polite and hands his work in on time, but he's fairly forgettable due to his quiet nature. His father seems to think quite highly of him, always trying to motivate him to do better things with his life and get the best out of his education, but Charlie thinks this is because his dad didn't use the same opportunities for himself and so is trying to live his life through his son.

Patronus:
Charlie's Patronus would likely be a squirrel, if he could ever cast one. He simply loves squirrels, and he's a bit like one – a little bit nervous, avoiding people when he can, and darting around like he's always busy.
Boggart:
A Boggart would likely take the form of a doctor, as Charlie has several bad memories involving doctors.

His teachers love him when he does well and despair when he doesn't. He particularly gets on with his Potions teacher, mostly because he's so good at the lessons, and he's generally nice and friendly to his teachers. He's just not always good at his subjects. The only one who ever has anything negative to say about him is his Muggle Studies teacher, who claims he knows bugger all about the world he grew up in.

History:
Charlie was born in Newport, Wales, as has every generation of his family for five generations, and his father never seemed to have the intention to move. His mother left almost immediately after giving birth to him, leaving him in the care of Howard, but the pair have struggled along just fine. Howard has worked in a garage as a mechanic for over thirty years, and took Charlie with him most days to see what his daddy did – later on, being honest about it, he would admit it was because he couldn't afford a babysitter.
When Charlie was seven, Howard fell in love with Melissa Pryce, a woman who ended up stranded in Newport on a trip through the town when her car broke down, and she never left, instead remaining behind to marry Howard and adopt Charlie. Charlie got on fairly well with his new step-mother, as she was extremely friendly and enjoyed having a small child to dote upon, but he didn't like his new step-sister, Harriet, whom he found loud, obnoxious and overly annoying, even for a teenager. She would often pick on him and tell him that she hated having to live with a boy, even though it wasn't exactly his fault. It was at this point he started getting more paranoid about things – the constant insults and negativity from Harriet affected how he interacted with other people, and to this day he worries that no one actually likes him but rather puts up with him, ensuring he does his best to be as friendly as possible while remaining distant, leaving him open to further bullying.
The new family went on holiday to Egypt when he was eight, taking Charlie's grandad on his father's side with them, but unfortunately the trip ended in disaster as the elderly man was stung by a tiny scorpion, and having not received treatment quickly enough, he died there. The family stayed long enough to bury him in Egypt, as he had requested it on the way to hospital, and they haven't been on a trip anywhere outside of Britain since.
His first manifestation of magic came in the form of inflating a soufflé that had collapsed after he removed it from the oven when he was eight, helping out Melissa in the kitchen. As none of the people in the house were magically inclined, everyone put it down to a fluke, but after that several more incidents of a similar nature occurred, usually to do with fixing food he'd accidentally burnt or someone ruined. As he grew better at cooking, however, the incidents decreased and so everyone forgot about them, until he received his letter from Hogwarts.
Charlie has few friends at Hogwarts, although he's fairly polite and friendly to anyone who tries to hold a discussion with him, but those he does know are his friends are very close to his heart. Charlie has had to be tutored in Transfiguration for the last year any volunteers? as he is so bad at it, but otherwise nothing of noted interest has happened to him at Hogwarts.
Preferred House:
Hufflepuff as... well, he's very much a Hufflepuff!

Positive Traits:
- Excellent at Potions – despite his apparent inadequacy at spell-casting, Charlie has found himself to be pretty good at Potions, even if he does say so himself. He always liked cooking with his father when he was younger, and he finds Potions to be fairly similar; it's all about adding ingredients in the right amounts and at the right times, after all.
- Enthusiastic – Charlie tends to get enthusiastic when he likes the sound of something, which generally means he's going to put as much effort into it as physically possible. As long as the people around him are receptive to it, then he can encourage them to do well, too. It doesn't always work, and sometimes he still messes up, but at least he can say he tried his best and that's all he really cares about.
- Punctual – Charlie is almost never late. He's always very conscious of the time, mostly because he's a little bit paranoid, and as such he manages to keep himself and his friends in good books of the staff, at least in relation to getting to class. Whether or not the teachers are still impressed by what is produced during lessons, however, is an entirely different matter.
- Good listener – Charlie likes to listen to the problems his friends end up having, as he finds it a lot easier to deal with them than his own. His listening abilities also allow him to take good notes, and he's not managed to mess up his revision notes yet.
- Hard-working – Charlie wants to do his best, even if it turns out his best isn't all that brilliant. He strives to do well in class, and makes the best of it with the friends he does have, hoping that he can make his dad proud now that he's not going to be able to do A levels like the man wanted.
- Tries to get on with people – while Charlie doesn't like to talk to new people because he gets nervous, he does his best to get on with the people he has to work with, live with and see on a daily basis. He's almost always polite, even if he's not really in the mood to be talking to people, and on his better days he actually manages to get up the nerve to go and talk to people.
- Can't hold a grudge – even if someone spends their days bullying him, Charlie finds it very difficult to hold a grudge. He doesn't really understand why people can't get along with each other, and doesn't like being angry at people; it just makes him feel extremely tired. This could be seen as a positive trait – Charlie simply rarely gets angry at people.
Negative Traits:
- Paranoid – Charlie is a bit paranoid, mostly in regards to how people view him. In all honesty it is a little bit worse than most teenage image issues; he constantly feels like he has to try and impress people, but coupled with his lack of self esteem, he simply ends up running away and falling into a downward spiral of thinking no one likes him. This makes him a bit of an easy target, as he's likely willing to do anything for a person as long as it reassures him that the person likes him.
- Low self esteem – Charlie has low self esteem, partly stemming from the constant nitpicks of his step-sister and his mediocre performance both in Muggle and magical schools. He always tries to do his best, but often falls short of the goals he has set (which tend to be a bit too high, in order to try and prove himself to other people), and as such his self esteem issues get worse.
- Too forgiving – despite thinking no one actually likes him, Charlie can't hold a grudge against people. While this can be considered a positive trait, it also makes him a little bit gullible, as he tries to see the best in people but then fails to realise that not everyone is nice. He often gets bullied and it's the fact he'll still talk to them afterwards that makes him such an easy and interesting target, as well as being easy to manipulate.
- Spell casting – Charlie is not the world's best spellcaster by far, and frankly he wonders sometimes why he hasn't been kicked out yet. He has had tutors in half of his subjects and currently is stuck with one for Transfiguration, but his lack of ability in spellcasting makes him wonder if he really does have any real magical powers at all.
- Very young personality– while physically a teenager, Charlie appears to have a very young mind and outlook on life. This isn't to say he's an idiot, he's just very gullible and a tad bit too nosey for his own good. Occasionally his common sense will prevail, but the need to learn about everything as if he was just an infant often gets him into more trouble than it was worth in the first place. He also often misses things such as sarcasm, or misinterprets statements that are obviously jokes at his expense.
Interests:
- Science fiction - Charlie can't get enough of his scifi.
- Books - he just loves to read!
- Games - he would spend hours playing computer games if electronics worked in Hogwarts, but he's happy to play board games and stuff too.
- Writing - he wants to be a novelist one day, maybe, so he enjoys writing and being creative.
Likes:
- Rock music - it's cool!
- Drum and bass - it's loud and it's good.
- Playing the flute - it's the only instrument he managed to get the hang on.
- Confusing people by speaking Welsh - it's fun to see their faces.
- Fruit - it tastes good?
- Freshly cut grass - it's a nice smell.
- Chocolate - who doesn't love chocolate?
- Science fiction - his favourite genre.
- Helping people - it's just nice to be nice!
Dislikes:
- Insects - they freak him out.
- Transfiguration - he fails at it, so he dislikes it.
- Wizard music - he doesn't understand the appeal.
- Failing - he hates not doing well, he feels bad!
- Feeling foolish - which happens frequently. Who really likes to feel foolish?
- Pop music - it's just naff.
- Vegetables - nowhere near as nice as fruit.
- Rabbits - one bit him when he was little and now they scare him.
- Tutors - makes him feel like he's failed.
- He was too busy talking to a friend as he walked home from school one day, forgetting to pay attention to the road, and he stepped off the curb just as a car was speeding round the corner. While he only hit the edge of the car, bouncing back onto the street, there was enough force to break his arm badly.
- His grandfather was promised he would survive the cancer he had in his lung, but it spread and Charlie's grandfather died. Charlie doesn't trust doctors anymore as a result.
- He's scared of needles anyway.

Personal Statement:
Charlie's favourite classes are:
- Potions – Charlie is excellent at Potions, and it's about the only class he can actually say that about. As such, he's rather proud of himself in the subject and enjoys learning about it because he feels it might just be the only thing he manages to pass. He finds the lessons quite soothing, in a way.
- Transfiguration – while Charlie has very nearly been kicked out of this class early because he's so bad at it, Charlie quite enjoys Transfiguration because it's so interesting. While he may not understand it or be able to do it, he gets a thrill seeing someone else turn a teacup into a mouse or some other such transformation.
- History of Magic – while he won't admit it to anyone else, for fear of being laughed at more, Charlie finds History of Magic fascinating. Sure, Professor Binns is dull, but he's still a ghost, which is utterly mind boggling for the Muggleborn wizard, and the history of witchcraft is amazing. He simply tunes Professor Binns out and reads the books instead of falling asleep like everyone else.
Charlies hates:
- Defense Against The Dark Arts – unlike Transfiguration, Charlie doesn't like Defense Against The Dark Arts, and probably wouldn't even if he was any good. Learning about the creepy creatures, while interesting, simply makes Charlie more paranoid than he was before entering the classroom, and he tends to get a bit jumpy afterwards.
