“Uhhh...” Rickie started, willing himself not to forget what needed to be said again. Cassie obviously didn’t look happy about being disturbed at this time of the morning and, embarrassed, he looked to the floor. He needed to say something soon otherwise he’d be stuck looking like a right fool. “I have to tell you a message from Silas,” he mumbled, still not looking up. It was something to do with her taking someone’s shift because they’d said they were sick but they’d been attacked by something or other, Rickie hadn’t really listened to what Silas had said towards the end. He could have sworn the older man had mentioned something about a vampire.
“You have to take over someone’s shift because they’re sick but Silas says they were attacked by a vampire or something like that,” he repeated as best he could finally. A voice behind the girl caught his attention and he blushed deeper. He’d disturbed her and someone else. Good one. “I’m sorry about waking– holy fuck!” Rickie had looked up and caught sight of the man in the room, if you could call him that. How was he still alive and up and about? There were sever second and third degree burns on about seventy five percent of his body, something that would definitely debilitate a human beyond moving or put them in a near fatal condition in hospital.
“Jesus...” he breathed, wide eyed. Of course he’d seen burns that bad before but usually the victim was lying down, writhing in non-existent pain or dead. Maybe it was one of the men he couldn’t save come back to haunt him? Not dwelling on it, Rickie’s brain kicked into gear and before he knew it he’d gone to his room and was back with his medic’s bag. “You need to get those burns dressed immediately,” he automatically moved past Cassie towards Dacian, rummaging through the bag and pulling out several rolls of bandages and packets of non-stick gauze. He already knew with burns as deep as the ones the man had that he wouldn’t need morphine, all the nerve endings would have been fried.

Cassie couldn’t help the smile that flickered as Rickie stumbled over his words. She didn’t know him all that well as she’d only worked with him for about an hour when she’d covered the start of the next shift for one of the other waitresses that had an appointment somewhere or other. He was a sweetheart and entirely unsuited to Scores. Some combination of the loud music and interacting with drunken patrons seemed to turn him into a nervous wreck, or maybe he was just like that all the time. He didn’t seem any more relaxed now away from work.
She tried to hide a wince at the mention of Silas, messages along the lines of ’you’re fired’ or ’Dacian is a dead man’ springing to mind. It was a relief to hear it was just covering another shift although she came close to snapping that she didn’t have to do anything. Rickie was just the messenger, there was no point having a go at him about it and she sure as hell wasn’t going to risk her job any further by challenging Silas on the matter. It looked like she was stuck working whatever shifts she was asked to until this whole thing blew over.
Cassie’s gave flicked over to Dacian, he’d somehow managed to stand up again and he looked terrible. The growled warning was enough to put her on edge again, she wasn’t stupid enough to believe the small contribution of blood she’d made to Dacian would be nearly enough to sate his hunger. Besides trying to explain why there was a major burn victim who should by rights be dead, or close to it, up and walking around was a near impossible task. She needed to get Rickie out of here before… Shit. Too late.
”No, Rickie…” She started, shooting Dacian a worried look as her colleague left the doorway to return to his room. It could have gone worse, at least he’d run away instead of trying to help. Cassie reached for the door, but before she could even begin to close it Rickie was back. Medical bag in hand. Shit. ”Rickie stop!” She tried again, grabbing his arm to try and stop him before he got any further into the room.

The mention of Silas most definitely didn’t help Dacian’s growing mood. If the unknown man – Rickie as Cassie had called him – wasn’t careful, the messenger was going to get shot. Their conversation petered out in his mind, replaced by the drone of heartbeats. Cassie’s was more tempting, but Rickie’s had a dangerous nervous edge to it that made Dacian’s hunger grow. Fear was an appetite builder, like the smell of freshly cooked bread to a human.
The words came back with a start. Being in such a vulnerable state, Holy expletives were not appreciated. Apparently Rickie had spotted him – his vision was too damaged to tell – but the use of the son of the Lord’s name in vain was a fair indication the man had seen him. His growl raised a few notches in volume, and thankfully the man’s heartbeat faded. “Cassie?” The slight twinge in his voice might have been worry. He was certainly capable of killing right now – he was hungry enough – and he wondered if Cassie would have the strength to stop him.
He’d just started to relax by inches when the heartbeat came closer. “No.” He breathed, closing his sightless eyes. Cassie saw him then, and he clenched his fists, feeling the skin taught over his knuckles strain. “Cassie?” The inflection was definitely worry. He could hear rustling along with the heartbeat which was assuming a steadier beat. The man obviously found comfort in his medicine, but Dacian would rather he took comfort in it elsewhere.
The vampire bared his teeth in a snarl, throatily declaring his discomfort at the man’s presence. The man wasn’t going. Saliva began to gather in his mouth, his throat ached as if parched. “Cassie!” The rising panic was directly proportional to the man’s closeness. If Cassie didn’t get rid of him now, Dacian would be disposing of the body before too long.
His legs were shaking with the effort of holding him up. He would fall soon, and his hand grasped at the doorframe to hold some of his weight. “No closer.” He snarled, wishing not for the first time recently that magical folk had a brain and knew danger when they saw it. The damned idiots didn’t know when to run. At least the man would have a good head start, Dacian wasn’t exactly fit to chase right now.

Rickie was oblivious to everything but the job at hand. He couldn’t be worrying about his safety when there was someone in more danger then he was a fact that, in reality, was definitely not true. He shrugged off Cassie’s hand on his arm, her words barely registering. He’d been told not to go to a patient before but he hadn’t listened, not once. It was his job not to listen; by listening to the warnings of others he risked the lives of the wounded.
Again he ignored the man’s call for him to stop, another thing Rickie had heard before. Men as badly wounded as the one before him generally didn’t want anyone to see them in the states they were forced to be in. It was never their choice or their fault but for some reason the men Rickie had seen were almost embarrassed to be seen injured and weak. It was a feeling he could relate to, he himself had almost been killed and put in hospital for several months from a shell blast. The bigger scars on his body almost never saw the light of day but the pale pink of new flesh on his neck stood painfully out as he moved steadily towards Dacian.
Rickie went to remove his helmet but found he’d lost it. The lack of protective headwear was dangerous; it wouldn’t take long before a sniper picked him off, regardless of the Red Cross on his arm. Quickly he unfurled two rolls of field dressings, burn gauze and placed the stuff on the... bed?
The shift between flashback and reality left Rickie disorientated for a moment before the sense of duty that had been drilled into the man took over. It would help if the man was sitting but standing would do. Rickie looked into the face of the injured man and saw something new, something sinister in his eyes but he ignored it. Rickie’s better judgement and sense of self-preservation had already been proven to be practically non-existent.

The way Dacian kept repeating her name, each utterance laced with increasing panic didn’t escape her notice. She felt utterly helpless, especially as Rickie shrugged off the grip she had on his arm to continue past her into the room. Cassie hadn’t failed to notice the slightly distant expression on Rickie’s face, as though he wasn’t entirely aware of what was going on in the room. If he had been he might have picked up on the growl Dacian shot in his direction, or heeded the warnings from both of them to stay back.
”It’s going to be ok Dacian.” She said, her assurance sounding weak even to her own ears. She couldn’t promise that, Cassie wasn’t even entirely sure what was going on. To date she had never seen Dacian lose his self control, sure he’d come close, but some kind of mental block that seemed to let her trust the vampire against all odds didn’t allow her to truly believe he would attack Rickie. Was she willing to risk her colleagues life to test this belief? Absolutely not.
She quickly started after Rickie, catching up as he rummaged through the first aid kit to pull out a roll of gauze. ”Rickie, please! I appreciate the help, but you need to leave now.” It was worth a shot, but her warning seemed to fall on deaf ears, only making Rickie all the more determined. Cassie stepped between the two men, her back to Dacian as she tried to block his path. ”We have everything under control. It’s really not as bad as it looks.” Which was only true when you applied the logic that if it was as bad as it looked Dacian would be dead.

It was all getting to be a little too much. Sensory overload without sight lead to a frustration that only made his control worse. Without the ability to se, there was nowhere to direct him. Cassie was making a poor attempt at shooing the man away, and to make maters worse, she was coming closer. Was she trying to politely dismiss the man? She was a witch; surely she could wave her magic wand to make him disappear.
Dacian’s growl began to rise, turning into something much less human. He either had to get away from here or everyone had to leave. Being as he couldn’t walk, then it was the latter. Cassie however seemed to think blocking the man was a better plan. It would have been had Dacian not been in a state of ultimate hunger. Cassie’s heartbeat overlaid the man’s, and it was a lot more attractive. The dangerous move had taken his attention off Rickie, but unfortunately for Cassie, she now held the bulk of his focus.
The warning growl faded as he slipped into hunting mode. He could barely see enough to distinguish Cassie’s shape, but she was so close that a reaching hand found her shoulder easily. His movement speed was impaired, but he managed to yank Cassie back with enough force to pull her against him. With the wall as a brace, he was sill standing, and Cassie’s height brought her neck conveniently close to his mouth.
Her scent made him pause for a moment as it filled his nostrils then in a last surge of control, he pushed her less than gently aside. He lunged toward the man, though the first leg to step out buckled at the knee and he fell. The momentum of pushing away from the wall at least got him in rang of the man and they tumbled down together. It appeared Dacian had the weight advantage though had he been ale to see the height of the man it would have surprised him. Too hungry and blatantly incapable of feeding properly, Dacian set about biting whatever living flesh he could. Having fallen mostly in line with the man’s abdomen, Dacian teeth sank into Rickie’s waist first.
His usual neatness had been thrown out the window as he simply used his sharp canines to rip at the skin and then he sucked greedily at the blood that welled up. In the frenzy, he’d forgotten about wands and he’d taken no precautions to hold his prey still. All he was interested in was the blood, and the rest of the room faded out around the sound of the heartbeat and the metallic taste of blood.

“Shut up and let me do my job,” he shouted at Cassie, frustrated with her attempts to get him to leave, “you obviously do not have everything ‘under control’. If you’re just going to stand there being fucking useless, get out.” Unreasonable anger coursed through Rickie, it was like a whole new person had spoken up. Cassie hadn’t deserved the outburst she was only trying to do something right, something that Rickie couldn’t see yet. Outbursts from him surprisingly weren’t uncommon, he had a tendency to lash out at small things, a trait he put down to his genetics, not the disease he didn’t have.
Okay, so much for standing. There was no way the man in front of him would be able to move, Rickie knew that and knew the fall was coming even before the vampire did but it still didn’t make him get out of the way. If anything, Rickie moved to catch him and the awkward position combined with the sheer force the man had propelled himself into Rickie’s middle caught him off guard and he found himself tumbling onto the floor, landing with a dull thud on the wooden floor.
Again Rickie had been there, done that. He’d had people fall onto him all the time, maybe not burn victims, but still men who’d thought they were ok only to find out the most certainly were not. As the man tussled with him Rickie again began to get angry. What was it with men thinking they were too proud to accept his help? In his time as a medic Rickie had been kicked, punched, stabbed, slapped, almost shot, peppered by shrapnel but never had he been bitten, or bitten as hard as this.
“What the fuck?” he cursed as blood began to rush from the wound. Finally the wizard in him clicked, shit he was dealing with a vampire... oh well a patient was a patient. With a hard kick to the groin, Rickie wormed his way out from underneath the creature and pushed himself up so he was standing over the vampire. Instead of leaving like he should, the man grabbed and squeezed hard on a lightly burnt area of flesh. It was something he knew would hurt like the devil. As well as the probably painful hold, Rickie gave the man one right hook across the face.
“Listen here vampire, you need help whether you want it or not and I’m the one to give it to you. You need to be bathed in Betadine*, which will hurt like a son of a bitch but it needs to be done. Then you need to be bandaged up to stop shit getting into the wounds. I can get you blood-packs in any sort you want but you need to realise I can only do those things if you let me help you,” he said calmly but firmly to Dacian, looking him straight into his milky, filmy eyes.
Rickie stood still holding Dacian and bleeding from his abdomen. He was breathing hard from the tussle looking completely awry. He hadn’t looked like he did for a long time.
*Betadine: Antiseptic solution.

Cassie visibly flinched at Rickie’s outburst, it was a vast contrast from the softly spoken stuttering man she had come to expect in the short time she’d known him. She took a step back, or, no, she was forcibly yanked back by Dacian’s impossibly tight grip on her shoulder. A yelp of surprise escaped her lips and she could feel his cold breath ghost over the skin of her neck, raising goosebumps on her flesh. Somehow in her desperation to keep Rickie from getting any closer she’d managed to forget she was putting herself between a very hungry vampire and his meal.
Before true terror that he was going to bite her could really sink in she was shoved suddenly aside. Cassie stumbled with the force, tripping and crashing into the wall. Her shoulder collided first, with enough force that it would probably bruise and her head followed shortly after. She must have been knocked out for a few seconds because when Cassie came around she was lying on the floor and Dacian was on top of Rickie, tearing into his abdomen like some kind of feral animal.
”No!” She pushed herself gingerly to her feet, having to pause several times to let the blackness at the corners of her vision recede. Before she could even begin to start across the room to reach the pair Rickie had managed to free himself from Dacian’s attack by kneeing him in the groin. Cassie winced. For a man intent on helping Dacian, Rickie was doing a lot of damage. ”Stop!” She made her unsteady way towards them, priorities suddenly changing as Rickie punched Dacian in the face.
”What the hell is wrong with you?” Cassie asked, grabbing Rickie’s arm as much to support herself as stay his hand. This was all going wrong, she never should have let Rickie into her room, she never should have even answered the door. Tears welled in her eyes. ”Please Rickie.” She wasn’t even sure what she was pleading for any more. Did she want him to leave or help? Whatever he’d just said sounded good and Cassie knew it was never something she’d have been able to do on her own.

Dacian was definitely not listening, not to Rickie at any rate. A kick to the groin and subsequent punch to the face had invalidated anything Rickie had to say. Suffice to say, the vampire was not impressed. The pain as the man had dug his fingers into his arm had caused him to roar in pain. It was as if the man had chosen just the right spot to cause as much pain as possible. As close to a foetal position as the full-grown man could get, he rode out the wave of pain with gasps and grunts.
Cassie’s voice penetrated it, but her words only made him angrier. Not at her, of course, but at the man with her. He could hardly protect her in this state and it seemed Rickie was unwilling to listen to her pleas. In a last attempt at getting the blood he needed and to keep this sadist away from Cassie, he grabbed blindly with one arm, his hand closing round the other man’s ankle.
No sooner had he done that then something hit him in the jaw. He didn’t have time to register what before the blackness fell over him as all his senses failed and he slipped into unconsciousness.

All those voices coming from one woman. They were all shouting at him, trying to stop him from doing what was right, what he had to do. The voices, the memories were a crushing black pool and the man he was trying to help was dragging him into it, trying to drown him. Inwardly he screamed for the voices and explosions to stop, for this man to stop and let him help. “God damn it,” the man cursed under his breath trying to calm himself. He needed to be calm; it was the only way the black fog would lift. As soon as the vampire clutched at his leg he knew what to do.
“I’m real sorry mate but it’s for your own good,” with one well aimed kick Rickie knocked Dacian out cold. Did he feel guilty about having to do that? Absolutely but it was the only way he could tend to the creature without getting his head torn off. “Look Caity, Cassie, whatever your name is I’m sorry I yelled and I’m sorry I had to do that but this man needs help regardless of what he is,” he explained softly, his gaze not wavering from her eyes. He’d upset her but it was something Rickie could live with but for now she needed to put it aside.
“I’m going to need your help and we need to move quickly. He’s going to be awake sooner rather than later and when he is all he’s going to be thinking about is blood. Now’s the time we get the shit out of the open skin, mop up the fluids and puss and put Betadine on him ok?” quickly Rickie moved to get his bag and pulled out a large brown bottle and a handful of cotton pads, a few of which he threw at Cassie. He motioned for her to join him, he needed her help, there was a lot of skin to cover.
“When you put this stuff on it dries brown so you can’t miss a spot,” the man explained, “watch what I do and don’t be afraid that you’ll hurt him.” Rickie poured some of the antiseptic liquid onto Dacian’s chest and scrubbed roughly at the burns. “The scrubbing will get rid of any crap and dead skin, the Betadine will dry out the burns and kill any germs that might start eating away at his already dead flesh,” again he felt the need to explain his what he was doing. He needed Cassie to understand he wasn’t here to hurt her vampire friend.
As the adrenaline from wrestling with a vampire wore off, Rickie began to feel the bite on his stomach. He threw a quick glance at it to assess it. By the looks of it the bite was fairly deep. Blood had seeped through his torn shirt and was dripping out onto the floor. Now it was starting to get painful but still the man ignored it. Dacian first, he came later.
