Cassie had spent the past few days working or in Dacian’s crispy and understandably irritable company, so she hadn’t exactly had time to go and visit Ed. She felt a little guilty that she’d basically managed to forget about him again now that she had the vampire to keep her occupied, but she consoled herself with the fact that he hadn’t tried to contact her either. He knew where her room at The Three Broomsticks was, or there was always owl post.
Although she couldn’t help being a little relieved that he hadn’t stopped by her room too. It wouldn’t exactly be easy to explain why she was hanging out with Dacian like they were old friends and it’d be a little awkward when the whole biting thing came up. All in all it would be better for all of them if Cassie went to Ed and talked to him at the Hog, where Dacian wasn’t around to fuck things up. If all else failed she could just lie through her teeth.
When her shift at Scores ended instead of heading straight back to her room she apparated in the direction of Ed’s pub, wondering how pissed Dacian would be when he smelt both the club and The Hog’s Head on her. Cassie quickly pushed her way through the door before the winter chill could cause more than the smallest shiver down her spine, her eyes flicking automatically in the direction of the bar where Ed could usually be seen polishing (try smearing the dirt around a little) a glass or serving a customer.
The smile on her lips flickered and died as she spotted him, entwined in the arms of a suspiciously familiar girl. Cassie flinched as Jaz leaned in to plant a small kiss on the corner of his mouth. It felt like a punch to the gut and she tears started to well up in her eyes at the betrayal. Why had he told her he loved her, bothered to forgive her, if he was just going to throw it all back in her face? She wasn’t going to let him see her cry, she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.
Cassie should have known better than to believe Ed had ever cared for her. At least before he had just left, instead of playing tonsil hockey with some other girl. Blinking furiously, she marched over, fists clenched at her sides. ”I should have known you couldn’t keep it in your pants for five minutes Edward.” She spat, resisting the urge to slap him. And Jaz, what a slut, launching herself at the first man she laid eyes on. A taken man. Cassie’s man. (OOC: Oh the hypocrisy >_>)

When Jaz stopped in his head Ed roared in protest, things were just getting interesting. The look on her face reassured him and he moved in to continue where they’d left off. Her question was a valid point but it was one that had come up many times before. Usually he just said Rowdy would look after the bar but as the dog was off with Viv the bar would be left unguarded.
Oh well.
It was a price the man was willing to pay. “I’m sure no one will notice if I disappeared for a bit,” he mumbled, too busy toying with the collar of Jaz’s shirt to give the answer much thought. The kiss on the corner of his mouth was more like it. He kissed back lustily but almost stopped in surprise. Out of the corner of his eye he’d spotted a familiar blonde haired girl. Ed smiled into the kiss vindictively but soon found himself feeling guilty, then almost angry. The alcohol in his system was making a jumbled mess out of his emotions. So much for not wanting to see Cassie again. He found part of him wanting to go and beg for forgiveness but another to yell and scream at her like a child.
Hadn’t the two of them been down this road only a few weeks before?
For a moment he did neither but he did stop kissing Jaz and looked at Cassie with a look that almost said ‘who are you to talk?’ Ed took a step towards Cassie still thinking of what to do and say to her. The more he looked at Cassie, the more he felt both guilty and angry but he didn’t want to yell at her, that was the last thing he wanted to do. “Oh yeah, that’s rich coming from you, Cassandra,” he quipped sharply, glaring. Jaz was all but forgotten now; all Ed could think of was dealing with Cassie.
“Now you know how it feels, I could cry and then it would be all ok wouldn’t it? I could lie to you and reel you back in with lies and then everything would be fine again. At least I’d meant it when I told you I loved you,” he spat furiously but still not raising his voice above his normal tone. He turned away, breathing in air sharply. It looked like he was finished with her but he wasn’t, he was far from it. Again he turned to Cassie, a glare still plastered on his face.
“Tell me, were you planning on telling me you were still fucking Dacian or were the two of you just going to continue to laugh about it behind my back? Yeah I’m the big fucking joke here and don’t try and deny it, Silas told me everything,” well, more like ‘hinted and I jumped to conclusions about everything’ but Ed wasn’t about to tell her that.
There was more he wanted to say but he wanted to hear what she had to say before he continued. What excuses would she come up with this time?

Jaz laughed. The man had walked behind the bar before and helped himself to a bottle. What was to stop them from doing that the second Ed’s person left the bar floor. Still she wasn’t about to protest. A hard, horrible day at work, this was just the thing she needed, ”In that case,” she smirked at him.
With one hand playing with his hair again, the other busied itself fiddling with the bottom seam of his undershirt, kissing him deeper at he kissed her back. She felt his shift. He seemed more awkward. Stiffer than he had been before, more tense. Something was up.
”I should have known you couldn’t keep it in your pants for five minutes Edward.” Jaz gulped. She knew that voice. Cassie. Her friend.
She turned her head and saw the blonde standing near the doorway. She saw Edward move forward and sat herself back down on her stool. She had gotten herself caught in the middle of something much bigger than herself. Something she knew in five minutes she was going to regret. So much for a bad day getting better.
Hang on a second? Love? ”Sure looks that way from where I’m sitting,” Jaz mumbled under her breathe, playing with her metal bracelet, looking away and smiling politely at the other customers who were now watching the charade play out before them.
Listening to Edward’s furious words, Jaz perked up, furious herself, ”So what, I’m just some revenge driven screw?” she said standing up and levelling herself with Ed, ”You’re a jerk, Edward,” she was half tempted to leave. But if Cassie hit him she wanted to be there to see it. If she didn’t, she’d whack him one herself.

Cassie took a step back, crossing her arms defensively across her chest, the hurt at his angry words clear on her face. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go, it was her turn to be angry. This time Ed had made the mistake. How many other girls had he done this with? He’d made her cry, beg, plead for forgiveness over a simple kiss and all along he’d been jumping into bed with every pretty girl that walked through the door of The Hog.
”It was one mistake, I thought you’d forgiven me. That means you don’t get to throw it back in my face when you’re caught red handed.” Cassie’s eyes narrowed, her fingers digging into her crossed arms so tightly her knuckles went white as anger flared up inside her. She was making a scene, the patrons of the pub were no doubt watching the whole thing like it was some kind of sick theatre for their amusement, but she was too riled up to back off and wait to finish this in a more private setting.
Every accusation her threw her way made her feel sick. Did Ed really think that little of her? She didn’t even know what he was talking about. Her eyes widened in surprise and more than a little bit of confusion. ”Dacian and I… We never…” Cassie stumbled over the words, slipping so easily back into the denials. Then she stopped, shook her head. This wasn’t her fault and Ed wasn’t going to get away with easing his conscience by placing all the blame on her.
”You believed Silas over me?” She scoffed. ”Whatever he told you is a lie and the fact that you didn’t even bother to ask me before jumping into the arms of another girl tells me exactly how much you love me.” The fact that her voice wavered was not an indication that she was close to tears. Not at all. Cassie clenched her teeth, swallowing down the lump in throat and averting her gaze so he wouldn’t see her upset.
She looked up again as Jaz piped up, any anger at her friend melting away. Jaz couldn’t have known about her and Ed, about their past, and now she was stuck in the middle of this whole sorry mess. She even felt a little guilty that she’d called her a slut, even if it was only internally. It was nothing Cassie wouldn’t have done herself. ”I’m sorry,” She said to the brunette quietly. ”I should have told you about Ed.” She shot a venomous look in his direction. ”Warned you.”

Visibly Ed snorted and rolled his eyes at Cassie, her denials were what hurt most of all. He knew the truth, it had been confirmed when he’d spotted a rather gross looking Dacian sneaking in to feed Viv. Silas had told him about that, well gloated about it and had said he’d turned Dacian into a roast when he’d ‘walked in on him with a certain blonde haired girl.’ When Jaz spoke, for once Ed felt incredibly bad for what he’d done to her. She was an innocent victim caught up in this by his recklessness. He mumbled something that sounded remarkably like ‘I’m so sorry,’ as she walked past then turned his attention back to Cassie.
“No,” Ed corrected, “it was two mistakes. I had forgiven you for the first one. I believed you and now I find out you were practically screwing the dead bastard in the Quidditch stadium only a few days ago. If Silas hadn’t of walked in on you would you have told him to stop? Said: No I’m with Ed, I can’t.” Again he snorted, putting on the best girl’s voice he could at the end, which was surprisingly good.
“Somehow I don’t think so,” he spat. Like Cassie, Ed folded his hands across his chest in an almost identical defensive manner. It was a stance he’d used so many times when they were younger. “To think I trusted you and you go and make me look like an idiot. Jeez thanks,” he snapped at her, before looking apologetically back to Jaz. He had to apologize properly; he had been a jerk trying to use her like he did. “Jaz I’m really sorry, I shouldn’t have used you like that, it wasn’t fair. I’m glad Cassie came in and interrupted, if she hadn’t I would have made a mistake that probably would have hurt you more and I would have lowered myself to HER level,” he explained, ignoring the fact that Cassie was even there. Ed didn’t expect Jaz to forgive him but he could live with that.
“I loved you Cassie, hell I still do but you obviously don’t feel the same way so go back to that fuckwit of a man, thing, whatever the hell IT is. Enjoy peeling dead skin off the bed sheets. I have a job to do so if you haven’t got anything to say, we’re done here,” he said calmly but maliciously, ignoring the fact Cassie was making a nice scene. If that was what she needed then she could go ahead for all he cared.

It was like watching a Wimbledon tennis final. Only this time, there didn’t appear to be a winner. Cassie hadn’t appeared to think she had done anything to wrong Edward and Ed had acting like a twit thinking she had slept with somebody else. In said act, nearly doing something he would later have regretted with Jaz herself. Both of them seemed to be trying to prove to her that the other was better somehow.
To tell the truth it wasn’t working. She thought they were both idiots.
”Oh just grow up!” she complained, her neck starting to get a little cramped, ”Just admit you’re both wrong, kiss and make up! I’m going home now.” she said finally, glaring in Ed’s general direction before pulling her wand from my pocket and disapparating from the Hog towards home.
Her day had gone from bad to good to worse. Lovely.
Now all she needed was a hot cup of tea, her bed and preferably a hug from her mother. Life just wasn’t meant to work out of her, not today. To be honest the whole ordeal had given her a headache.
Cas was her friend, she hadn’t meant to do any bad by her. Even though she had, it hadn’t been her fault. Although she had thought about the possibility of the two Australians knowing each other, surely if they were all that they would be staying together, rather than Cassie being at the Broomsticks with the ‘dead man’.
That was something else altogether she wasn’t daring to think about. Wizards and witches, werewolves and vampires? Not something one really wanted to think about when all they wanted was their bed.

”That isn’t what happened at all.” Cassie shot back angrily, growing increasingly frustrated with Ed as he continued to throw around accusations and utterly failing to hide the fact that he was getting to her from him. ”Nothing happened with Dacian.” A lie, but Cassie was beyond caring. It wasn’t like his opinion of her could get any lower of her and while she wasn’t exactly entitled to righteous indignation she was going to give it a damn good try to make him think she was.
”You think Silas is looking out for your best interests?” Only days before Ed had been trying his hardest to dissuade her from working for the man and now suddenly they were best buddies. ”Fuck Ed, I knew you were a stupid bastard, but this is a whole new level of moron.” She bit her lip; that had hit bellow the belt. Petty? Definitely. She was just lashing out now, trying to see what more damage she could cause to the wreckage of their relationship.
It seemed Ed was doing the same as he shot a barb her way while apologising to Jaz. Before she could snap back a retort her friend was interrupting, berating the both of them. Cassie pulled a face at the thought of kissing and making up with him. Short of holding her breath until she turned blue and stamping her feet she couldn’t really get any more childish about the whole affair. She didn’t even get the chance to throw in a ’he started it’ because Jaz had apparated out of there.
For a moment Cassie was tempted to follow, run away before Ed could say something that really hurt. But that would be like him winning and since he’d just as good as announced the argument was over there was no way she was leaving now. ”Don’t you dismiss me Edward Johns!” Her eyes flashed with outrage. ”This isn’t my mistake. You were the one kissing Jaz. Did you even bother to learn her name, or was she just another notch on your bedpost?”

Yet again more snorting and eye rolling but now it was mixed with regret, something Edward was unfamiliar with. Regret at trying to use Jaz, trying to hurt Cassie and regret over having trusted her around that fuck Dacian. He would kill that vampire; it was the source of the problem. If it hadn’t of been for Dacian fucking everything up he and Cassie might have been... well things might have been different. “That fucking bastard,” he swore sharply under his breath. That thing was going to die, somehow.
Seeing Cassie in the sate she was in front of him, Ed’s expression softened slightly. Maybe he should beg for forgiveness? Plead his case to her and hope for the best? No. Disgusted at himself for being so soft, Ed once again glared at Cassie. This was her fault; she’d driven him to this, to Jaz. Why was it just ok for her to screw someone else?
“Nothing happened,” he repeated incredulously, “why do you keep lying to me Cassie?” Ed shook his head in frustration, more at the fact that he couldn’t stop thinking about closing the distance between them and holding her. What she said about Silas was true but from the look on his face the other night the man had known he was telling the truth. Silas tended to do that when he knew the truth would hurt more than anything else. “Silas may be a bastard but he tends to tell the truth on matters like this, trust me I know him better than you or your fuck-buddy do,” he snapped.
A battle of emotions raged on inside him and anger was still winning but only just. The blow about being a moron had stung and given anger just enough power to resurface as the winner.
“No this is my mistake, I admit it –something you struggle to do- but it was because of yours. Yes I was going to use Jaz as something to forget the fact you’re always off with the crispy asshole... and I had actually learnt her name. I admit I did the wrong thing and I regret it and I am glad you stopped me going through with what I wanted to do,” Ed got softer as his statement drew to an end. He was tired of fighting, tired of having to deal with Cassie like this.
“God we really fucked things up...”

The entire time Cassie had known Ed, all the way through school, almost her entire focus and attention had been consumed by thoughts of him. At the start she’d hated him and spent a good portion of her time thinking of ways to piss him off, but that had quickly turned to attraction and Cassie had taken to littering her school books with little hearts and variations of ‘Mrs Edward Johns’ instead of doodles of Ed being struck by lightning or dying in other spectacular ways. Then she’d actually started dating him and well… That had been great.
The point was Cassie had spent so much of her time on Ed that she wasn’t sure how to act now he wasn’t all she had to think about. It was like they’d been apart for so long that they’d forgotten how to behave around each other. Being an adult was hard work, she missed the impulsivity of being a teenager. Cassie gave a little frown. Because she’d done so well controlling her impulses so far, if she’d had a little restraint maybe this whole mess wouldn’t have happened in the first place. Not that she was taking the blame. It wasn’t her fault. Not entirely anyway.
”Fine, you seem to trust Silas more than me.” She snapped, still seething with anger. ”If you like him so much why don’t you go fuck him instead.” Yeah, real mature Cassie, play the gay card because that’ll help. ”I hear he was the one that gave you the crucifix you used on Dacian, I gotta say the company you’ve been keeping really sucks.” The fact that Ed was willing to believe Silas over her hurt more than any insult he might say.
”I’m not lying.” Cassie sighed, raising a hand to pinch at the bridge of her nose and try to fend off some of the frustrated anger that was making her lash out. ”Ed, if you can’t believe that we’re never going to get anywhere.” She clenched her jaw, fighting to hide the tremble in her lower lip, it was beginning to feel alarmingly like the end of the argument and they hadn’t made up yet. ”Yeah, we really did.” She gave a little sniff, so much for not letting him see her cry. ”I’m so tired of this Ed. I just can’t do it any more. Not tonight.” Cassie half turned, apparating away before she could truly turn her back on him.
