Introducing...
Name:
Matthew “Shifty” Powell, almost never referred to by Matt. Instead people call him Shifty. The nickname has been with him since his first year and he can’t even remember why he was given it.
Age:
21st February, 16
Gender:
Male.
Year:
Sixth.
Birthplace:
Cardiff, Wales
Ethnicity:
Caucasian, is of English and Welsh decent.
Nationality:
Dual Welsh and English citizen.
Blood:
Half-blood.
Relatives:
Mother: Amanda Dobbin (muggle).
Father: Daryl Powell (wizard).
Sister: Bailey Powell, 14, Hogwarts student.
Pets:
Spam the shelter cat. Actually the cat’s real name is Sam but Matt calls him Spam because he is extremely annoying. Sam is a very, very demanding cat and will meow as loudly as possible when he’s hungry, wants to go outside, come inside or when he just wants attention and he can get very loud. He’s an extremely friendly, loving cat that can just get really annoying.
Matt got Sam about a year ago when he decided to adopt a cat from his local shelter. At first everything was great, he had a playful, bouncing kitten who provided endless entertainment but things changed when Sam found his voice. Matt found the countless hours of a cat mewing loudly in his ear a little abrasive and can often be seen yelling at or using silencing charms on the poor thing.
It could be said that Matt and Sam are the perfect match for each other. Both are long and skinny, loud and can be annoying and they’re both considered mutts. Matt because he’s a half-blood, Sam because he’s the offspring of a stray cat who’s a bit of everything.
Wand Type:
Maple with Dragon Heartstring. 11 Inches.
Soft and warm, moderately strong and somewhat malleable, this is a very steady and dependant all-purpose wand which only has limitations in very advanced, more theoretical or scientific areas of magic. Can be used for active spells though, the defensive ones are more preferable than the attacking ones.
Appearance
Picture:
Hair Colour:
Very dark brown, border lining on black.
Eye Colour:
Hazel brown.
Build:
On the skinny side but has some muscle tone.
Skin Tone:
In between white and tanned depending on how much sun he gets. In winter he can get pretty pale and in summer, very brown.
Height:
6ft 2 inches
Dress Style:
Matt dresses how he wants when he wants. He can usually be seen pairing a light coloured shirt with some form of vest and dark trousers when not in school uniform. When he dresses in casual he tries to aim for a casual but smart outfit but when he’s feeling tired he’ll usually just wear jogging bottoms and a hoodie, but that’s a rare occurrence.
Matt also has a thing for anything with tartan like patterns, except for kilts. He wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one of those. In fact he really just has a thing for patterns using lines, especially shirts. Some other items of clothing Matt can often be seen wearing are grungy band shirts that are favoured by muggle teens, though he won’t admit he stole the style from muggles.
He is also a huge fan of scarves, they’re just so awesome.
Specifics:
The first thing people will hear about Matt is his nickname and questions about it are what people normally ask him when they first meet him. His unusual dress sense is another eye catcher. People either snigger and laugh at what he’s wearing or admire him for his bravery. His height is another thing that stands out about Matt. He likes being tall, it helps when reaching for things on high shelves but can also be a pain when something is close to the ground. Immense height is a gift and a curse.
Not that many people know but Matt has a small dragon tattoo on the inside of his right wrist. He obtained it by lying about his age during the summer holidays. He doesn’t really want people seeing it so he wears either a bound piece of fabric or thick leather banded watch to hide it. He got the tattoo because the dragon is what he feels represents who he is inside and is his favourite type of animal. Matt hides it to avoid the questions of why he got it and why it's a dragon. He thinks others might take the reasons behind it as stupid.
In Front Of Friends
Sexual Orientation:
Heterosexual, but has been known to flirt with guys on the rare occasion when he’s intoxicated.
Self Image:
On the outside it’s all self-confidence and assurance, on the inside it’s second guessing and dislike. Most of the time he’s pretty happy with who he is as a person and how he looks but every now and again the poison of others and their harsh words seep in. After being told by people that he’s too tall, too skinny, is a freak, is ugly Matt can’t help but believe it. Though after awhile of self-loathing he shrugs it off, telling himself the taunts aren’t worth worrying about, the people who say mean things are just insecure and unloved.
He also second guesses himself a lot, did I make the right decision or didn’t I? Thoughts like that are common in Matt’s head.
To the Outward Eye:
At first Matt can come off a little crazy. When strangers see him with his friends he is very loud and brash which can turn people off talking to him. When he’s not with friends he appears very quiet and reserved and that’s when people take him in in detail. They see his quirky sense of style and someone who appears easy to approach.
Social Status:
Not popular but not an outcast either. Matt floats between groups, his place on the social ladder is somewhere around the middle and he’s generally only really friends with people of the same standing. Though he says he doesn’t, Matt judges people a lot, mainly on their outward appearance and social standing. He steers clear of the majorly popular people and the people who are outcast by most groups.
He has about four or five close friends and many other acquaintances with whom he’s friendly with. There’s a great deal of people that Matt really doesn’t like and most of them are in a house of a certain green colour.
Positive Traits:
Negative Traits:
Skills:
Matt first picked up a guitar when he was about 6 and has been playing ever since. He’s extremely good at picking up songs by ear and loves to play the riffs of his favourite rock songs. He basically only plays other peoples’ songs having never had an interest in writing his own songs. More than anything he loves to have jam sessions with people who play instruments, especially other guitar players.
Another skill of his is that he’s good at drawing amusing little cartoons and spends most of his time in class coming up with ideas for his comics.
His dad also got him interested in the world wars, specifically the second one. As he grew older he became more interested and somehow convinced both his mum and dad to let him take up long distance shooting as his sport. Unsatisfied with the modern weapons, Matt was lucky enough to stumble upon a World War II era sniper rifle and won several junior championships using that gun. This is a skill he keeps strictly at home, never mentioning it while he’s at school or in the wizarding world.
Likes:
His Family, no matter what it’s like, to Matt family is the most important thing in the world.
Girls, what straight teenage boy his age doesn’t?
His Leather Bag, the best thing the school issued him with, he’s hardly ever seen without it.
Vintage Rifles, he has a fascination with World War II rifles, especially sniper rifles. Matt collects them and is a skilled sniper (shooting cans and clay pigeons of course).
Having a Drink, only on special occasions of course.
His Cat, although he doesn’t always.
Muggle 70’s Rock Bands and the band 'Muse', the guitar work from some of those bands is absolutely brilliant. Matthew Bellamy from Muse is his favourite guitarist.
His Guitar, it’s Matt’s baby.
Drawing, a good way to kill time in class.
Laughing, more than anything he loves to laugh and make others laugh with him.
Dragons, they’re his favourite subject to draw and think about. All that power and notoriety, plus the awesome ability to be able to breathe fire.
Dislikes:
Over the top Arrogance, it’s such a turn off, especially in girls.
Cocky People, people who know they’re hot or talented and feel the need to rub it in to people who they think are below them.
People who act badass, but fail miserably and come across as compensating for something.
Balloons, they’re bloody scary.
Flying of any sort, being high off the ground with the chance of falling back to earth and dying in a horrible mess, no thanks.
Clinginess, Matt likes his space, especially in relationships.
Being Unhappy, it’s more fun being happy.
Quidditch, once you’ve watched it a couple of times it’s all the same really, and it gets really boring.
Patronus:
A Common Welsh Green Dragon. The most docile of all the dragon species but that doesn’t mean it can’t be dangerous. Underestimated because of its lack of hostility towards humans, people often take it for granted and end up getting hurt, much like what people do with Matt.
Boggart:
A giant bunch of balloons. When Matt was young he got into a fight with some balloons and lost. In other words he fell into a pile of them and as he struggled against the horrible smell and feel of them some burst around him, frightening the child half to death.

Report:
Matthew isn’t a bad student he just has poor attention. He tends to let his mind wander during class and it shows in the work he produces, most of which is covered in sketches of cartoons dragons and even caricatures of some of the teachers.
All in all, although a good wizard, Matthew really needs to start paying attention in class.
Personal Statement:
I want to do well at school but I dunno, I just don’t. It’s probably because all the subjects are so boring, listening to teachers go on and on isn’t interesting. The only subjects that really get me interested are DADA, Charms and CoMC because they’re hands on and you’re almost always doing something, though when we do have theory lessons I tune out. Potions I can’t stand and I think it smells funny and History of Magic, oh my God. It has got to be the most boring subject on earth, I heard it was even worse when a ghost taught it, if it’s even possible to make it more boring.
History:
Born on a stormy winters day in February, Matt was a blessing to two loving parents in the form of Amanda and Daryl Powell. The two adults were ecstatic to have a child, a son at that, to call their own. From the instant the boy was born they doted on him, in their family home in south Wales, like most parents with a new child do.
Two years of uneventful and barely remembered childhood later, Matt’s sister Bailey was born exactly a week before his birthday. Unhappy at having all the attention on the new baby, especially so close to his birthday, he began to cause trouble in the muggle hospital they were in. His run of mischief had its grand finale when he pressed the emergency call button that brought a doctor and several nurses running. Needless to say Matt’s parents were not happy. The year Bailey was born was also the year two year old Matt fell into a pile of balloons to acquire his phobia.
When Matt was around ten he first showed magical abilities and troubles began between his parents. Matt had broken his arm extremely bad, so bad in fact that the fracture had penetrated the skin. Frantically he was rushed to the hospital and by the time his dad got him there the break and skin was completely healed. Daryl, being a wizard, was extremely happy to know that his son would follow in his footsteps but here’s where things got messy, Amanda had no idea Daryl was a wizard, he’d never told her.
He showed and told Matt about magic but urged he keep it a secret from his mother. Amanda instantly picked up that her husband was hiding something big from her and began to fight with Daryl frequently about the secrets he kept. The fighting died down a bit but out of nowhere when Matt was almost eleven, his dad was kicked out of the family home. It was revealed that Amanda had accused Daryl of seeing someone else and when he finally told her the entire truth it was too little too late. Amanda changed her last name back to her maiden name and refused to even speak to Daryl ever again.
The divorce hit Matt extremely hard but hit his sister and mother even harder. Even though he was still reeling from the destruction of his family he was the one who pulled his sister and mother through the turbulence that followed and is still occurring today. Even after almost 6 years, neither parent has been willing to settle and are still technically married. It hurts Matt to see his mother go through what she does but he can’t do anything about it.
Somehow in all the confusion that was his life, Matt ended up at Hogwarts and has somehow managed to stay there in between bouncing back and forth from England and Wales where his parents led separate lives.
Roleplay Sample:
A dull roll of thunder rattled the windows of the library. Matt Powell sat idly at a desk staring out at the horizon trying to spot the lightning that came with the thunder. Beneath him, strewn across the table, lay the homework he’d been banished to this God forsaken place to catch up on. Most of the parchment was covered in small scratchings of cartoon dragons. Drawing those was definitely more fun than trying to figure out potions homework.
He sighed, jumping at a loud clap of thunder. The storm was announcing that it had arrived at Hogwarts and was distracting Matt at the same time. His mum had told him he’d been born on a stormy day like today, but he still didn’t like the thunder. The lightning he could deal with. As the storm raged on overhead, Matt glanced at the incomplete homework and, instead of starting to work; he began to practice signing his name. As elegantly as he could he signed ‘Shifty Powell’ in big letters.
Shifty, people had been calling him that for as long as he could remember being at Hogwarts. Frowning with concentration, Matt wracked his brain for the memory of why people called him Shifty. Nothing, he had no idea but he liked the name so it wasn’t so bad. Once again he looked at his homework, turned over the parchment he was working on and began to scrawl random drawings of dragons and guitars. By the time he looked up again, outside was dark and he could distinctly smell dinner downstairs. Brilliant!
Unceremoniously he gathered up his things, stuffed them in his bag and bolted out the library. In the three hours he’d been in the library he’d written one sentence of his potions essay. Sure he felt a little guilty about not doing his work but it was nothing a good plate of some mashed potato and gravy couldn’t fix.

Positive Traits:
- Loyal – Matt believes that a true friend should be loyal to the end and tries to be loyal to all his friends. He is also fiercely loyal to his family and wouldn’t hesitate to drop everything if they needed him.
- Bold – Although far from fearless, Matt isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes and get into fights. If a person insults or hurts someone close to him, Matt won’t hesitate in returning the favour.
- Open Minded, Tolerant – Matt accepts people’s sexuality, race, religions and choices even if he doesn’t personally agree with them. If he has opinions about those touchy areas he keeps them to himself.
- Caring – He cares about what’s going on with his friends and does his best to solve whatever problems the people around him have even when they don’t want his help.
- Cheerful – Life’s too short to be unhappy all the time.
- Cooperative – Matt works well with others and is always willing to incorporate others and their ideas.
- Perseveres, Endures – Once he gets into something, Matt sees it through no matter what it is.
- Friendly, Approachable – Matt is very easy to approach and is always as courteous as possible to whoever he talks to.
- Mature - Matt has enough maturity to be able to mostly distance himself from the peer pressure and immature antics of most other boys his age though sometimes he can’t resist getting involved in what the others his age are up to.
- Quick Thinker – Almost always Matt can come up with a solution to a problem or an answer to a question in an instant.
Negative Traits:
- Fears both balloons and flying – Matt cannot stand balloons or even thinking about flying whether it be on a broom or plane. He doesn't know why he's afraid of flying, it's a fear that's always been with him. See Boggart for more on the balloon fear. Sometimes these fears can get in the way and hinder himself or others because he tends to stubbornly refuse to do anything that involves balloons or flying.
- Negative at Times – Matt has a habit of having a negative outlook on most things. In many bad situations he can’t help but think the worst outcome is the most likely.
- Introverted – He keeps his feelings guarded and emotions in check. He hardly ever reveals what he’s truly feeling or thinking to his friends or family and almost never lets out any other emotions apart from happiness and anger. Sometimes Matt can even come across as a bit cold, depending on what’s going on in his personal life
- Dishonest – He loves to lie about things if the lie is going to cause trouble with someone he doesn’t like’s life. He does it mainly to steal peoples’ girlfriends.
- Solves Problems with Fists – Push Matt far enough and he’ll get violent. Someone threatens something dear to him and he’ll most likely hunt them down to lay into them with his fists.
- Silly, Doesn’t Take School as Seriously as he Should – He prefers goofing around and making his friends laugh to concentrating in most classes.
- Gets Distracted Easily – Whether it’s by a spare piece of parchment to sketch on or his guitar to keep him from homework it will distract Matt.
