The teeth snapping dangerously close to his arm wasn’t enough to make Cain release his hold on the wound in Dacian’s shoulder, but the unusual (and excruciatingly painful) sensation of Dacian slipping his hand into the gaping wound in his stomach was definitely enough to make Cain lose his grip. He thrashed and gurgled, flecks of blood flying from his mouth as Dacian squeezed at organs that really weren’t meant to be squeezed and generally made a mess of his innards.
It was all damage that Cain could take, injuries that he could recover from given the time and a good meal, he might still even be able to win the fight. But then Dacian’s hand wormed its way up under his ribcage, fingers destroying any lung tissue in their path until his hand settled around Cain’s heart. It fluttered like a bird trapped in a cage and Cain let out a strangled gasp, falling still as he feared doing damage to the vital organ if he moved.
All of a sudden Dacian’s hand tensed over his heart and Cain let out a shrill scream that seemed to echo off the surrounding trees as pain exploded in his chest. The inevitable ripping as the other vampire pulled it free did not come, however, as Dacian went suddenly limp, falling forwards over Cain. For a moment he did not dare move and then, when it became apparent Dacian was not going to spring back to life and continue his onslaught, Cain wrenched the hand from his chest.
He didn’t care that he had probably done more damage by so carelessly breaking free of Dacian’s grasp. He didn’t care that all evidence pointed to the fact that Dacian was not as dead as he appeared. All Cain cared about was blood and he staggered to his feet, eyes wild with hunger and one arm wrapped about his stomach to stop organs spilling free. One look at Silas, wand still raised, told Cain that in his current state he’d be better off finding that meal elsewhere. It would be fitting for him to feed from Dacian’s human. Her blood would give him the strength to return and finish the job.

That had been entirely too easy. After all the fighting, broken bones, punctured lungs, stalking, kidnapping, blackmail, UST, research, plotting and confrontations that had made up the last month, THIS was how it ended. A bit of debris in the back and the 600 year old vampire just... keeled over.
Jesus fucking anticlimax and a half. Silas was actually disappointed. There was no laughter, no triumph, no gloating. Just a slightly confused frown as though he couldn’t believe that that was it. Seriously? That was about as satisfying as knocking a blind man over.
When Cain stood weakly the wand immediately darted to aim squarely at the vampire’s chest. He’d already put down one of them, no sense in letting the second run off, recuperate and come back later for him. If Cain was anything he was the type to come back with more force than necessary for perceived slights, and Silas was now mindful of the warning Dacian had given him all those weeks ago to never let a vampire get in his debt if he wanted to live for long.
Still, before Silas killed him there was one more task that Cain could be set to use for. If he died halfway, brilliant, if not, he was hardly a threat in his current state and would be no harder to deal with than Dacian had been. Besides, once Cain moved off somewhere he could make sure Dacian was actually down, and staying that way.
“Someone ran in to rescue the girl. Better put a stop to that,” Silas said matter-of-factly, flicking his wand in the direction of the basement then back to Cain.

Ed released her from their embrace and Cassie instantly wished he hadn’t. She needed to stay close to him, after so long spent alone (well she’d had Cain for company and frankly she preferred solitude) contact was the only way she could ensure he wasn’t going to leave her. A stupid misplaced fear perhaps, but Dacian had come for her and left her again, he was up there fighting for his life, for both their lives, and she was stuck down here with no idea what was going on.
She shifted closer to his side, her injured hand resting gingerly in her lap and her other one reaching out to grip his and hold on tight. ”I don’t want to argue any more.” Cassie said quietly. She wasn’t quite ready to give up defending Dacian, but more than willing to kid herself into believing that after this was all over she and Edward could go back to being the happy, carefree couple they’d been at school.
Cassie let Ed pull her closer, happy to let her head rest on his shoulder as she snuggled into his side. She was exhausted, emotionally drained and if it wasn’t for the fact that every little sound of the epic fight raging upstairs seemed to filter down to them she might have been able to drift off. The repeated crashes were putting her on edge and when a bloodcurdling scream finally rang out Cassie decided she’d had enough.
It was either Cain, in which case it would be safe to venture upstairs, or it was Dacian and it wouldn’t matter if she was upstairs or downstairs when Cain came to finish the job. Cassie had to know. She stood quickly, slipping away from Ed before he could try to stop her and heading for the stairs. The stairs creaked dangerously under her weight and she peered up, suddenly afraid as she realised there was somebody on their way down. A hand shot out with preternatural speed, grabbing her injured wrist and making her cry out. Cain.

Cain bit back a snarl at Silas, reaching up with one hand to wipe away the blood that was staining his lips crimson. Right now he was at a disadvantage and, while Cain was willing to set his sense of self-preservation aside in order to kill Dacian, he wasn’t quite foolish enough to risk pushing the wizard into action. The two of them were not enemies and had even managed to reach a tentative truce in the face of a common foe, there was no reason to turn on him yet.
That didn’t make Silas’s smug order any easier to stomach. He was not returning to the basement on the human’s word like some obedient attack dog, he was going there on his own violation. Cain shot Silas a particularly poisonous glare, limping past him to return to the shack and picking his way slowly across the rubble of the ruined wall. When he reached the top of the basement stairs he was surprised to see the human girl already making her way up. Excellent, she was making this far too easy for him.
Grabbing her wrist Cain pulled her to him drinking in her fear. ”Dacian can’t save you now.” He hissed gleefully, flashing bloodstained teeth at her. She tried to struggle, pulse beating deliciously in her neck, tears welling in her eyes, and Cain was forced to release the pressure over the wound to his stomach in order to subdue her. ”Hush.” He snapped, having put up with her snivelling for two days. Cain began to manhandle her down the stairs, wanting to enjoy his meal in less cramped conditions.

Cassie’s touch made Edward shiver and hold his breath for a moment. Her hand holding his made him forget for a moment the fact that he was in the Shrieking Shack’s basement hiding from two rampaging vampires. Automatically he squeezed back and found himself smiling weakly at the girl. They would get through this and, if Dacian survived, he would make it clear to the vampire that Cassie was his and not the vampire’s. Ed was a lot more hopeful at that thought, he even found himself hoping Dacian survived just so he could stand up to the brute.
Cassie’s words only intensified his hope but also made him slightly sad. Fighting was half the fun, it had been when they were young because then there was the making up part of it. “I don’t think we could last not fighting for five minutes,” the man snorted, squeezing Cassie’s hand softly. A spine tingling scream wiped the smile off of Ed’s face at once. The fight was over but there was the niggling question of who had ended it and who it had ended for. Before he could reach out and stop her Cassie went to the stairs and was met by the winner who was most certainly not Dacian.
“Cassie!” Ed shouted but it was too late, the vampire had her and was pushing her back down into the basement. Quick as anything the man was on his feet, holding the piece of metal he’d found in his hands. It was very easy to hold and nicely carved piece of random basement metal. As he held it in front of him he finally realised it was a sword. Score! What luck he had, it was a sign that he was hopefully about to kick some ass and save the girl... or get ripped to shreds. The first option was more confidence building to think about than the second option.
“Let her go,” he demanded, pointing at the vampire with the sword. God that was so cliché but he was new at this hero business and this was how he’d seen it done in the various Disney movies he’d watched. Instead of looking as threatening as he’d hoped, all he’d probably done was give the vampire something else to create a bloody mess out of.

Of course Silas had told Cain that somebody had gone down into the basement to rescue Cassie, he could hear the man’s heartbeat as he shoved the girl none too gently down and he could smell the man on her, they’d clearly been getting close. That didn’t make it any less surprising when he demanded Cain let Cassie go. Pointing Dacian’s sword at him in a way that might have looked intimidating had the man’s heart not been racing.
“Very cute.” He said, his voice a rasp as blood bubbled through ragged lungs. Cain looked a little worse for wear, his neck shredded, more than half of one of his ears torn off and the only thing that was currently keeping organs spilling from the wound in his stomach was the fact that he had Cassie pulled so tightly against him. ”But I think not.” Cain turned his head into her neck, teeth grazing at her shoulder in a way that made her whimper.
This close he could smell the bead of blood that swelled from the cut he’d made, even over the overwhelming scent of his and Dacian’s blood that permeated the air. So sweet, it would be practically charged with adrenaline. A bout of ravenous hunger shot through him. Cain needed to kill this man and get on with his meal. But first just a little taste. Fangs sank into the flesh of Cassie’s shoulder and the blood that plumed into his mouth was as delicious as he’d imagined.
Before he could even begin to be sated he tore himself away, tossing her aside like a discarded doll and not bothering to lick over the bite in her neck and heal it over. Just enough to know what he was fighting for, perhaps he could see Dacian’s attraction after all. A bloodied snarl was all the warning the man god before Cain lunged forwards, hands going for his throat with the intention of slowly choking the life out of him.

This vampire was more menacing and more blood chilling than Dacian had ever been. There was nothing in the creature’s eyes but pure malice and hate, they were black and soulless. All Edward could think as he watched the vampire manhandle Cassie was that they were both going to die. Her first and he was going to have to watch. The man cringed and whimpered slightly when Cain cut and then sucked on Cassie’s shoulder, but the vampire then stopped when he cried out. Ed was going to be the first to die it seemed.
Now the strange vampire had moved into the dull light of the basement it took all of Edward’s strength the keep down a gag. The creature was a mess with cuts and gashes all over him as well as half an ear and what looked suspiciously like guts glinting in his hand on his stomach. It made the man wonder what Dacian looked like if this is what the winner looked like. He tried not to think about it, he had to be strong if he were to beat the vampire and save Cassie, no matter what Ed would not let her die, not tonight at least.
Again the man cringed when Cassie was tossed aside and he felt pure fury welling up inside him. No one treated Cassie like that, not in front of him anyway. Just as he was about to lunge at the vampire with the sword a guttural snarl came from the creature. Ed raised the sword and held if fast just as he felt colt and slimy hands close around his throat. He felt the sword in his hands pierce flesh and then bone and heard the sickening sounds that went with hit.
Holy shit he’d actually stabbed the thing. He gave a triumphant and surprised croak at the vampire as he struggled to both breath and get free of the creature’s grasp.

As moves went running into another man’s sword was generally ill-advised. Cain had underestimated the human lad, or not taken into account the handicap his extensive injuries gave him, either way he’d made a fatal error as the point of the sword buried into his torso. The blade caught awkwardly between his ribs, but the force of this man’s attack and Cain’s own momentum from launching forward forced it between the bone, cracking his ribs apart with resounding crunch.
Cain reached for the throat of his opponent regardless, either unaware of the sword sliding into his chest or just not caring in his single-minded intent to kill. His hands found the human’s throat, blunt nails scrabbling at skin, struggling to get a good hold as he felt the mortal pulse flutter between his fingertips. He gripped harder, cutting off that all important air supply and pulling himself forward, further onto the sword, but also closer to his next victim. Cain growled, teeth dripping with Cassie’s blood, putrid bloodied breath spilling out into the man’s face.
He felt the sword slide out of his chest, slicing through yet more ruined flesh and lung tissue as it withdrew. A choked gurgle was all he could manage and he refused to loosen his grip on the man’s neck, trying to strangle as much life out of the guy as possible before the inevitable second blow with the sword reigned down on him. Cain stumbled back as he was shoved, looking up just in time to see the sword swinging in a smooth arc at his neck.
They say that in the few seconds after the head is severed from the body a person is still aware. If this is true Cain would have felt a falling sensation as his head toppled from his shoulders, caught a glimpse of his lifeless body slumping forwards onto his attacker and then blackness as he landed face down in the lap of the human girl. The last thing Cain heard before he died would have been Cassie’s horrified scream.

In his hands the sword shuddered as it broke through bone and flesh. Edward’s eyes widened in both shock and horror as the vampire still grasped his neck. He watched as it caused the sword to dig deeper into its flesh without even acknowledging the sword lodged in his chest. Ever tighter did the grasp get on the man’s neck, cutting off the air that was so needed to live. Ed gasped and croaked as he struggled to breathe, his heart racing. One hand shot up from the sword in a vain attempt to wrench the vampire’s hands off his neck but the man lacked the superhuman strength necessary.
The smell of the vampire’s breath and the sight of blood dripping from his teeth made the man dizzy for a moment, that and the lack of air. Ed struggled to keep conscious for a few seconds before in one last desperate move, he pulled the sword out of the vampire. Hands were still painfully around his neck so the man shoved the vampire back, it was his last hope and it worked. Instantly a wave of relief tore through Ed’s body as he gulped in fresh air.
As the vampire stumbled back Ed lifted the sword over his head, taking this opportunity to go at the creature. His last stand. Without thinking he brought the sword down with a seeping motion onto the vampire’s neck. A crunch was the only sound Cain made as metal sliced through his neck, taking his head clean off his shoulders. Ed dropped the sword in disbelief as the lifeless body of the vampire slumped on top of him, making him fall to the ground with it. Horrified the man shuffled backwards from underneath it, his front slicked with fresh vampire blood and something that looked awfully like internal organ juice. He heard Cassie’s scream of terror which told him she’d landed herself with something equally horrifying.
Unable to do or say anything, Ed sat in stunned silence, looking at the corpse of the vampire. He’d done that, he’d saved the day. Not Dacian, not Silas, not Adrian, not even Abe, but him, Edward Johns. He’d tangled with a vampire, survived, killed it and rescued someone all in one night. It was over and the man couldn’t help but to let a shaky laugh escape, it was all over. Once again quiet, he picked himself up off the dirty floor and moved to stand over Cassie.
“It’s all over now, let’s go home,” he said softly. In one quick motion Ed bent down and hoisted Cassie up into his arms, ignoring the head that stared lifelessly up at him from the floor. With the hand supporting her shoulders Ed pushed Cassie’s head gently into the crook of his neck as he climbed up the stairs, he didn’t want her to see whatever was up there, whatever mess Dacian had been reduced to. With Cassie clinging to him, Ed spotted Dacian’s surprisingly intact body and tried to hold her head tighter, she’d seen enough already.

Cassie did her best to break free of Cain’s grasp, a token effort as she already knew it was pointless, there was nothing they could do to stop the vampire now. Dacian had failed so what hope did they have? Tears welled in her eyes blurring her vision of the already dark basement, trembling despite Edward’s coat still wrapped about her shoulders, her suddenly knees felt almost too weak to stand, not that it mattered with Cain manhandling her into the room.
She felt sharp press of teeth on her skin, a sensation that was almost becoming familiar now, and she almost welcomed the darkness that the sedative would bring. Cassie felt a swell of guilt, at least she wouldn’t have to watch Ed die. It didn’t happen, instead there was a ripping pain in her shoulder and she was stumbling to the floor, hands going out automatically to catch her fall. Yet another knock to her broken wrist that sent pain shooting up her arm.
Cassie scrambled back, getting as far away from the vampire as possible her vision swimming as she did. She focused as best she could on Ed, he had a sword, Dacian’s sword and he was pointing it at Cain. When Cain attacked Cassie couldn’t suppress the frightened cry that escaped her lips, she turned away, unable to watch when there was a good chance Ed would get hurt and even die. By the time concern and morbid curiosity got the better of her Cain’s her was sailing through the air and it landed her lap with a thump.
It was just one thing to much for the poor girl and she shrieked, pushing it away and trying not to take in the exposed bone protruding from Cain’s severed neck, his sightless eyes still open and staring and the mangled flesh that might once have been his ear. She bit back a sob, shoulders shuddering with the effort and took comfort in Ed’s voice, not truly hearing what he was saying, but find the words soothing anyway.
And then she was in his arms, Ed scooping her up with ease and carrying her up the stairs. Cassie didn’t fight that hand at directed her head into the crook of his neck, happy to hide away and try to forget everything that had happened to her in the past two days. She would be happy if she never saw this place again and Ed was so warm and comforting. There was one thing she had to know before she could leave all this behind though. What had happened to Dacian? ”Ed,” She murmured, pressing a hand against his chest to signal she wanted to be put down. ”Please, I have to know.”
