FAQ part 1 – Basic RPGing
001: What is an RPG?
An rpg is a role playing game in which people take control of their own personal characters, and "live their lives". It is like a story written by lots of writers instead of one, and can be loads of fun.
RPG stands for role playing game. It's when you assume the role of a character (usually an original one you make up) in a world were every other character is also playing a role. You then act out your role in situations around it. There are also NPCs (non-player-characters) in RPGS, these are usually characters created by Admin for the sole purpose of helping out stories.
002: What is Salvio Hexia?
Salvio Hexia is a Harry Potter based roleplaying community. This means that we create our own original or canon characters in the magical community created by J.K. Rowling.
003: I’m new to rpging, how should I do it?
Your rpg posts should be written in…
Third person – Point Of View is rather important to keep in mind when roleplaying. All role plays are expected to be in third person POV. Third person POV means that it is written from outside the character's perspective but you can still describe what the character is doing / looks like as well as what they are thinking. Please try to stear clear of using first person POV.
Wrong way: I walked into the room, “Hi” I said.
Right way: Zak walked into the room. “Hi.” He said.
Past tense – this is the most common tense used in writing and the easiest to read.
Wrong Way: Zak jumps over the fallen tree and draws his wand.
Right way: Zak jumped over the tree and drew his wand.
When a character speaks it should be in speech marks.
Wrong Way: Zak walked into the room and punched Kaze in the face. Zak: Ha!
Right way: Zak walked into the room and punched Kaze in the face. “Ha.” He said.
Your posts should read like a story, if they don’t please edit them so that they do.
Just remember; You may know what's going on inside the heads of other characters from reading the posts but your character does not.
Also remember that when you role play you're going to be interacting with other RPers, so give them something to respond to as well!

Part 2 – Getting Started
001: Where do I start playing?
Anywhere you want to. Have a look through the areas, pick one your character wants to be in and just start a post, or find a post that’s already active and jump in. However you MUST post your character profile and have it approved first.
002: How do I introduce my character?
However you like. There is a board where you can post plots, a black book, or you can introduce yourself in the chatbox. After that, just start threads and have fun!
A good idea though is to describe your characters appearance a little in the first post that features them – that way people know what to imagine.
003: How long can my posts be?
As long as you like – though please take a new paragraph every 5 lines or so to make your post easier to read. However please try and put some substance into your posts. There's a thin line between writing tons of really really short posts not even a paragraph in length and spamming. Generally anything above two solid paragraphs is okay.
004: Should I just jump into a thread or ask first?
Well this time around I think the easiest way to avoid any trouble would be to use this system. This key will simply be placed this code in the Topic Description.
(Open) - Anyone can just jump in.
(Private) or (Character, Character) - This thread is private, likely because it has already been scripted by the people involved. Members not invited cannot join.
(Mature) or (M)- Younger or easily offended people beware. ^^
Important – If you want to say something out of character (OOC) to the other players in the thread please do it like this.
{OoC: ....}

Part Three - Characters
001: How many characters can I have?
As many as you think you can handle, and we recommend about four as more than that can be difficult. However it’s really a good idea to bring a character in and get him or her well established before you introduce another. I’ll leave this up to your own disgression though. Please be realistic. ^^
002: Can my character die, or leave Salvio Hexia forever?
Yes – this is totally up to you of course. If you decide to do this please PM myself or one of the other admins so we can discuss it to prevent any confusion.
003: What can my character do?
Pretty much anything you like. The weirdest question I’ve ever been asked is ‘can my character fart?’ – my answer was; ‘Yes… is you really want them too…’ lmao.
004: What can my character not do?
Your character cannot kill another character, neither can they badly injure another character without the permission of the person that plays them. This is just good manners. Also please don’t move another persons character – I’ll show you can example of what I mean.
Kaze leant forwards and kissed Dice hard on the lips. She kissed him back, obviously enjoying it.
Uh oh… bad me, Dice isn’t my character – so I can’t say what she did after Kaze kissed her can I? That’s up to her… What I should have written is…
Kaze leant forwards and kissed Dice hard on the lips. He couldn’t wait to see her reaction.
That ways Dice can choose to kiss back, or slap him, or whatever. ^^ Remember you control your character, not someone elses.
There is an exception to this however – if someone has given you permission to write what their character is doing in your post if for some reason they are away or for another reason. If this happens please put an OOC not in the post to let the Admins and Mods know you aren’t breaking the rules.
005: You say my character can’t be Overpowered – where do you draw the line?
Umm… Well, iit’s not much fun if your character can’t be hurt or effected in any way by the others. If your character is very powerful you can balance it out by giving them an equal number of weaknesses. Your character cannot use powers that don't fit with the Harry Potter canon. It doesn't fit with the board for obvious reasons. We don't want any Mary Sues running around the board guys.
006: What do I do if someone makes my character do something I don’t want them to do?
PM an admin or mod at once and we’ll deal with it. Don’t worry – this isn’t allowed and we will ask the person to edit their post or else delete it.

Part 4 – Other Random Things
001: Can I play a character from my favourite anime/game/book in this RPG?
Nope, I’m sorry, Salvio Hexia is a Harry Potter RPG. The only charcters we want to see here are original witches and wizards, and Harry Potter canon characters. Inuyasha does not belong here. XD
002: Will Quidditch teams & matches be happening?
A Quidditch Team List has been made and the link can be found in the sidebar. For the moment we don't have a system for playing quidditch matches, but until the teams are more filled out it isn't really a priority.
003: Are house points being counted on this site? I saw a post by a 'Professor' saying he would reward house points for his lost cat so I wasn't sure if house points even mattered or not.
We used to have a system, but it was a lot of effort to maintain and because it didn't have any bearing on the actual RP we decided to scrap it. Appologies for any inconvenience. You're still free to have your characters mention housepoints or anything to do with them. ^^
004: What year is it in the RP?
2025
I am actually a very very huge fic. fan, and was wondering... could you perhaps... mix normal characters (for special purposes like the Seers) with mythical ones? Like, half vamps.. or something along those lines? I kept thinking how cool would it be to have a rare case of half vamp or shape shifters... (animal shifting from DNA?)
We already have a half-vampire, since they're canon to the Harry Potter world. Anything that isn't canon won't be accepted on the board because we feel there is plenty of challenge in playing normal characters and more than enough opportunity to be creative with what is given (centaurs, and whatnot for example). However, if you REALLY want an idea you're free to propose it, just no guarantee we'll acccept it.
Any other questions? Please post them here and they will be answered and possibly moved up here if it's a good one.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere but I've been scouring and I haven't seen it so... I have a question about the very last point of the FAQ. For un-normal characters, do you need to PM an admin and ask permission or just post it in the app as normally? And would werewolves be included in this?

Yes, anything other than your standard, human wizard counts as "un-normal", and no, you don't have to PM and admin, but it's probably advisable. If you want to post your application, go straight ahead, but bear in mind that we may ask you to change the supernatural elements of your character.

No, your character must either attend Hogwarts if she's under or at the age of seventeen. If she's not, she can be an adult and have a job in Hogsmeade. Guildhall is in London and it would be impossible for her to commute to the castle. Also, if your character doesn't live in or around Hogwarts, she's going to have a hard time interacting with the rest of the characters on this board.

Yes, they do, but it takes quite a while. Hex runs at avout 75% normal speed, so a day in real time is a day and a half Hex time - add all that up and a year in our time would be a year and a half Hex time. So yes, characters do age, but it takes half as long again than it would in real time.
