Before meeting Amelia he had almost been able to handle the way vampires relentlessly pursued him, managing to stay enough steps ahead that following him rapidly became more trouble than it was worth. But feeling like some hunted animal was beginning to wear very thin now that Amelia had become such a big part of his life. His usual solution wasn’t possible. Amelia wouldn’t leave the school, her friends and the life that was as close to normal as she could get and the thought of vampires threatening that for her made Connor angry. Angry enough to do something stupid; like attacking two clearly stronger vampires.
Everything Connor hated about vampires only seemed to get proved right with each and every one he met. This one was no exception and the thought of him ever laying a finger on Amelia again made Connor snarl even as rough hands shoved him harder against the wall, a blossoming of pain in his broken collar bone forcing him to stop struggling. ”Don’t tell her what to do.” He bit out through gritted teeth as the vampire turned his attention to Amelia. He hated the way vampires acted like they were so superior, ordering people around like they were supposed to meekly obey without question.
There was little he could do, but snap empty warnings though as he was well and truly pinned up against the wall. It only made it worse when Connor caught a glimpse of Amelia over the vampire’s shoulder, her face was pale and she seemed to be frozen to the spot, an expression of absolute terror on her features. Every instinct in Connor’s body was screaming at him to protect her, at the very least to break free of the vampire’s grip and try to get between them. But attempting to move even a fraction of an inch only made his shoulder flare up with a searing pain so bad that he felt his stomach churn.
Having reached a stalemate he had no choice but to listen to what the vampire had to say and wait for the inevitable fangs that would sink into his neck and reopen wounds that had only just closed. Connor was quite surprised that he seemed to know who the other vampire was and he couldn’t help, but nod in confirmation as he remembered the artificial scent that had done nothing to hide the distinctive scent of blood-drinkers. What shocked him even more was the angry way the vampire reacted. He’d always considered vampires to be a united front against him and it had never even occurred to him that they might not all be working together.
Still, just because the two vampires that had threatened him, and more importantly threatened Amelia, weren’t best of friends that didn’t mean he was just going to roll over and play nice. Instead of answering the vampire’s demands Connor let out a long, low growl. However his sullen refusal to talk was challenged when the vampire asked about Amelia. He winced at the question, eyes flicking over to Amelia once more who was a still frozen to the spot, a constant visual reminder of what he was fighting for. ”He knows.” Connor sighed, his head dropping in defeat and all the fight seeming to go out of him. ”He was tracking her just outside the village, near the castle.”

She reeked of fear, and her heartbeat was pounding. “Oh will you stop sweating fear? I’m not going to hurt your mate unless one of you do something stupid. And if you keep that up,” he said, waving a hand in her general direction, “I’ll want to hurt you.”
He stifled a growl from the male werewolf with a jab of his finger to his collar bone. “Oh don’t you start.” He released his grip on the boy, stepping back to stand at the third point of a triangle, the other two corners marked by the pair of werewolves. “You have two choices: Tell me what I want to know, or run. If you run, I will chase you and have myself a two-course dinner. If you answer my questions, I’ll let you walk out of here with only one string attached.” He smirked, “Or should that be leash?”
He crossed his arms and looked expectantly at the pair. When they didn’t run, he continued, “Dominic has crossed me before, and I warned him off my territory. The fact he had encountered you, and is tracking Amelia, means he obviously did not heed my warning. I want to find him, and give him a warning he can’t ignore.” He flashed fangs.
“Tell me what you know so far. His habits, his motives, where you’ve seen him, and why he attacked you.” He directed the last specifically to Connor. Dacian has a fairly good idea as to why Dominic had attacked Connor. Werewolf was a rare and special treat, but harming the boy served no extra purpose. Even a young vampire like Dominic could overpower a werewolf without strain, so why so vicious?
Amelia showed no signs of attack, besides the faint scars Dacian himself had left in a brief moment of weakness. The girl had a right to be scared. The last memory he had of her was hazy, but he had been well fed that night, and inebriated. Suffice to say, he was surprised she was alive, but not unpleasantly so. He had two werewolves in his territory, though not if Dominic had anything to do with it. The boy was a pest to be exterminated before he depleted his stock.

It was easy for the vampire to say. He wasn’t the one who’d been attacked and drained of a healthy supply of blood that last time they had encountered each other. Controlling fear, in the face of the bastard, wasn’t the easiest of things to overcome and his threats weren’t making it any easier. She took a deep breath and swallowed. Being attacked by a vampire again would only be the icing on the cake to recent events. Really finish her off. With her wand in her pocket she took to interlocking her fingers, and trying not to look at the vampire to calm herself down. It helped when the vampire moved away. But they were still trapped.
Amelia didn’t like the idea of there being strings attached to anything. She’d rather sever all ties to the creatures. Even his joke went unappreciated. Not that it would have been anyway. Running wasn’t an option, she’d have to pass him to get anywhere and he’d only grab out and he’d have her. It was pointless. Amelia looked in-between Connor and the vampire. Safety and potential lethal danger. ”Me,” she stated, her voice barely above a whisper, ”He attacked him because of me,” there was more than a little truth in the statement. Dominic had as good as told her that.
That was the only reason he’d lashed out at either of them. The no where near pleasant conversation Amelia had had with the vampire had left her entirely freaked out. He’d tried to assure her that they were perfectly safe and what not. But with the glint in his eye and his attack on Connor, she wasn’t inclined to trust him all that explicitly. The fact that he was a vampire who’d attacked Connor didn’t even enter into it. He still managed to make her feel uncomfortable, hence the emptying of her drink over his head and practically running out of the pub.
”He was in the Three Broomsticks,” Amelia explained, clearing her throat, ”told me his attack on Connor wasn’t unprovoked, that Connor attacked him first. I don’t care if he did, as long as Dominic stays the hell away from us in the future.” Although she’d been able to speak, she still shifted on the balls of her feet trying to contain her nerves. She didn’t want to provoke an attack from the older vampire that she knew he was fully capable of. Amelia wasn’t past admitting that any attack on Connor was an attack on her. He was what she needed and without him Dominic would have probably succeeded in attacking her the first time.

”Don’t touch her,” Connor managed to choke out through gritted teeth as the vampire’s finger prodded into his collarbone, making pain flare up in his shoulder so sharply that the corners of his vision actually darkened for a few seconds. ”You’ve hurt her enough, I won’t let you again.” It was frustrating to know that should the vampire choose to he could do anything he wanted to Amelia and Connor wouldn’t be able to do a thing about it, but that just made him all the more determined not to stay pinned passively to the wall and let this monster toy with Amelia’s emotions.
He was slightly thrown off guard when the vampire released him, waiting for him to step back before he edged away from the wall himself. It could be a trap, vampires were more than twisted enough to let their prey go so they could enjoy the hunt. ”You can’t chase both of us.” Connor said defiantely, toying with the idea of running anyway. If he could just get between Amelia and the threat he was confident he could give her enough time to get away. At the very least she could get back to the pub where the crowd would keep her safe. The idea of owing a vampire anything was less than appealing, but he couldn’t be sure Amelia would get away and if he got himself killed then there would be nobody to defend her from Dominic.
Connor watched the vampire carefully, eyes narrowing as he waited to see exactly what it would cost them to get out of this encounter unscathed. He wanted desperately to go to Amelia, but he wasn’t sure if moving would count as trying to run. If the conflict between these two vampires was true then Connor couldn’t see the harm in relaying what they knew, he much preferred the idea of the vampires fighting each other, and hopefully causing considerable damage, instead of tracking Amelia. He could still remember Dominic’s threats, the way he’d promised Amelia would soon change her loyalties and the thought of him taking Amelia away in more way than one made him certain which vampire he’d prefer to deal with.
”He was tracking her, I couldn’t let that happen.” He said gruffly, not bothering to hide the growl that rumbled low in his voice. ”You vampires aren’t as invincible as you like to think.” Hopefully the vampire would believe that he’d given as good as he’d got during the confrontation with Dominic. It was certainly true that the sorry state of his collarbone had been something to do with kneeing the cocky young vampire in the balls. Connor wanted to make it absolutely clear that he’d do anything to protect Amelia, no matter what the cost might be. ”He didn’t just want her blood and he’ll try again.” The thought of Dominic going anywhere near Amelia made his skin crawl and despite the risk he found himself moving closer to her, standing half a step closer to the vampire before them and reaching back to find her hand.

Much better. He leant a shoulder semi-casually against the wall, passively guarding the exit to the alley. He crossed his arms across his chest and watched the shuffling of the male werewolf toward Amelia. Protective little puppies. His eyes flicked to Amelia who’d found her voice, and his partial amusement faded in a scowl. Stalking? So his interest in Amelia was more than passing. If he was actively seeking her out, it was not just a coincidence of crossing paths. And by the sounds of things, he’d been stalking her more than once.
His lip curled at the idea of Dominic wanting Amelia for more than her blood. The boy was a miscreant, a sexual deviant. First Vivian, and now teenage werewolves? Sickening. At least his own motives were straight forward and relatively innocent. Amelia was a food source, a particularly delicious one. Her gender had nothing to do with it. He grunted and shook his head despairingly. “Your guard dog can’t stop him. He is young for one of our kind, but ultimately he is stronger than you both put together. Your only advantage is magic, and the full moon. You should use your wands against him.” He glanced to her pocket, and back to her face. He had not yet seen where Connor was hiding his wand, but he was sure the werewolf wizard must have one on his person.
“Dominic is foolish, young, rash. He’ll play to his whim. There’s little finesse in the way he hunts. He likes to play with his food, and he’s fond of fear-mongering. It’s a weakness. Without subtlety, you’ll have forewarning of an attack. With preparation you can escape.” He explained, thinking back to the younger vampire hunting in London. Wizards and indeed werewolves required at least some skill to hunt. They were not as easy to dupe and catch as a regular human. Well, most of them. “You should be more cautious. Keep out of dark alleys and forests.” He looked to Amelia pointedly.
“This is free advice, my wolfish friends. I too would rather Dominic hunted elsewhere.” He huffed out a breath, though his air did not billow like the warm breath of the werewolves. “Unfortunately, if he is intent on catching you, he will likely try again. And your little guard dog is not invincible.” He shrugged a shoulder and glanced to the defiant male wolf. “He left you alive at least, though he has little reason to kill you. You are no threat to him, just as you are no threat to me. Luckily for you, I am a threat to Dominic, and if you are sensible, you’ll see how we can use this to our advantage.”
Leaning against the wall, there was plenty of space for them to slip by. They wouldn’t make it of course. They were quick, but he was quicker. He gave a pointed look at the escape route. “You’re right, wolf, I can’t chase you both, but I know a little something about how the world works, and werewolves are so delightfully predictable. You won’t let me chase her, and she won’t leave you. So really, you’re not escaping me until I let you.” He flashed a smile, “So play nice, puppies, it’s for your own good.”

The thought of want else Dominic wanted from her made her cringe. If she had any standards in that department the other person in question at least had to be alive. And a lot less than a century old, which Dominic wasn’t. She had no interest in going anywhere near the vampire again, so the thought of sleeping with him made her feel physically sick. He could bite her and drink her blood until her body was dry, but only when her body was dead and limp would he get that from her.
Amelia eyed Connor as he made to move, a flash of doubt crossed her mind as he moved to her side. When the vampire didn’t move towards him, only towards the wall. As his hand reached out behind him towards her she took the appendage straight away. She clasped it tightly and stood behind his shoulder and looked over it towards the vampire. Her other hand made its way around his wrist, holding it for an extra comfort as well as being a feeble attempt at keeping him close to her.
Amelia didn’t mention Connor’s lack of magic or a wand. It would only highlight a weakness that the pair of vampire didn’t yet know they had. Give it time, or give them more time with Connor on his own without the magic tinge from her and they would know in an instant. For now magic was on their side and Amelia wasn’t against using it against them. She also wasn’t against hiding in a pub full of people, but getting there was the problem. Making it past the vampire was impossible.
The idea of this vampire acting as a protection to the both of them against Dominic confused Amelia. Surely there was something he would want. Nothing in life was free, and pissing off a fellow vampire wouldn’t be payment enough. No matter how much he hated him. ”What do you want from us?” no matter how it panned out, Amelia couldn’t see any advantage for the pair of them. They would be indebted to the older vampire and he could use that against them whenever he wanted. And she wasn’t inclined to trust him. Even when Connor stood between her and her previous attacker.

While none of what the vampire was saying sat very well with Connor he had no choice but to listen. There was no escape, not without risking Amelia and he wasn’t going to do that again. Instead he had to stand by her side and let the vampire brag about his superior strength and the multitude of weaknesses that made Connor feel so inadequate when it came to protecting Amelia. Even so close to the full moon, with his senses and reaction times enhanced as far as they could be by the wolf burning so close beneath the surface he still fell a long way short of being able to do anything of use. He could only hope to provide an obstacle, to cause enough trouble to slow any vampire they met down. But up against one like the man before him even then he would be barely more than a brief distraction on the path to the big prize: Amelia.
Still he wasn’t going to let this vampire dictate everything and diminish the few skills he had. ”I don’t need magic to track a vampire like Dominic, his moves are obvious.” Connor grumbled, still smarting at the idea that magic was likely their biggest advantage, yet another area where he couldn’t help at all. ”Dominic can’t hurt Amelia at the school and neither can you.” He added, reminding himself as much as the vampire that their situation was not as futile as it seemed. Amelia spent most of her time up at the castle and Connor could smell the magic protecting her and see the way she felt safe on the grounds.
”We don’t want your help, vampire.” He spat angrily, feeling emboldened by the way Amelia’s hand found his and she moved in close behind him. The taster of being slammed into a wall was enough to convince Connor that the vampire was as strong as he claimed. That meant he could likely very easily deal with the problem that was Dominic. But at what cost? Would he expect payment in the form of blood? Connor shuddered at the thought of anybody sinking their teeth into Amelia. And why should they trust him when he could so easily just take that blood with their cooperation or without it?

Their species was overly tactile, and it was a strange thing to see one werewolf on their own. Amelia’s and Connor’s pack of two hardly had the defences of a larger pack, but their suspicion was just. They’d each been attacked, multiple times in Amelia’s case, so had little reason to trust him.
Thankfully, Dacian didn’t need their trust, just their cooperation. Connor was right about Dominic, he was easy to track, and conversely that meant Dominic was doubtfully a great tracker himself. It would be a simple thing to set up a trap for the younger vampire with the werewolves as bait, a plan which Dacian could implement with or without their help. With however was a preferable option. Stalking them without them noticing while simultaneously looking out for Dominic was much more difficult than having the wolves play the game and working together to lure the younger vampire in.
Pity the little dogs had to be stubborn. “And what are you going to do when you so easily track Dominic? Give him a good beating?” The vampire scoffed, “No wolf. You might not want my help, but you need it. You can’t both stay in the castle forever, and I know for a fact your female friend can’t resist adventuring into dark alleys or forests on her own. What happens the next time Dominic catches up with you? He could kill you, get to her and then what? Care to hear my offer before you dismiss it out of hand?” Dacian’s smile was smug. What other choice did they have?
“As you might already know, werewolf blood is somewhat of a delicacy for my kind. There’s very little gain for me to kill you, as your kind are few and far between. Dominic however seems to think you’re expendable, particularly you,” He pointed a finger at Connor, “As apparently males hold no interest for him. He’d rather have your girl all to himself.” Dacian straightened, standing away from the wall. “This is my territory, and Dominic is trespassing. As werewolves, you have free reign to roam in or out of my territory, but as you’re chained here by the school, you’re stuck with me.”
His smile was somewhat pleased. “Rather than chase after Dominic, as I know he’s after Amelia, I can wait for him to come to you. If you play bait, I can catch Dominic, and we’ve solved both our problems. All I want in return is really the only thing you have of value: blood. I could just take it, but it’s much easier – and less fatal – when you don’t struggle.” His close-lipped smile turned into a teeth-baring grin. “So, care to re-evaluate your refusal?” |

Amelia glared as the vampire started to speak again; making digs at her and her general inept ability at keeping out of trouble. Dark alleys and forests were just far too interesting to ignore. Though he was right; she should be far more careful than she was, especially with Dominic around out for more than Amelia cared to think about. She remained silent; they didn’t have any more choice than to listen to him, it wasn’t like they could go anywhere without him moving out of their way and he didn’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon.
She cringed as he brought up Dominic’s intentions, unconsciously tightening her grip on Connor’s hand. She didn’t want to be anywhere near the vampire, either of them. She nearly wanted to laugh as he claimed the territory as his; as far as she was aware she had been there far longer than he had, if anything this territory was hers. Though she wasn’t willing to fight the fact just then. The urge to tell him to leave – to tell him that this was the wizard’s town, not his – was nearing overwhelming.
Play bait? She’d done enough of that to last her a lifetime and it generally hadn’t been her intention those times. When the world ended would be the only time she ever helped him, and when hell froze over she’d willingly give him her blood; ”And what makes you think we want to give you anything?” she asked, unable to keep quiet, ”We don’t need your help, and we don’t want it,” she reasoned. Though the chance of him letting them go until they agreed was slim.
”How would you propose getting our blood without hurting us?” she asked, intrigued as to how he wanted to go about the game. It was all needles and blood bags then maybe. But the second teeth and licking came into the picture he could forget it. She’d been bitten by enough creatures for a lifetime and one had gotten her into this mess four years ago. It wasn’t that she particularly wanted to help the vampire, but if it got rid of the other and he stopped pursuing them both the better. She didn’t want needless blood to be shed whether it be hers or Connor’s. Patching him up didn’t need to become her new favourite past time.

”I'll find him this full moon and tear his throat out.” Connor snarled, growing frustrated with the way the vampire was shooting down every defence they had. It wasn't like these very concerns hadn't been plaguing him for the past month, the possibility that he wouldn't be able to protect Amelia if they had another run in with Dominic being the biggest one of all. ”He won't be able to hurt us without a head and the same thing goes for you.” Even the strongest of vampires would struggle against a werewolf on the full moon, not that Connor could ever hope to control the wolf well enough to hunt a specific vampire down. Confining himself to the forest for one night a year was as much control as he could ever hope for.
All this standing around talking was putting Connor on edge. He wasn't very good at negotiating or even at conversation in general and so talking to this vampire was making him feel very much out of his element. It didn't help that he'd never come across a vampire that wanted to talk before, usually they just took what they wanted and left. Amelia's grip tightened on his hand and Connor rubbed his thumb across the back of her fingers in a comforting gesture even as anger bristled through him at the vampire spelling out exactly what Dominic had planned for them. It was starting to look like a case of picking the lesser of two evils and right then, as much as Connor hated to admit it, this vampire, who had hurt Amelia so many times before, was their only option.
”You won't touch her.” He growled, not willing to concede this point, no matter how dire their situation was looking. ”I won't let you take her blood.” Connor paused, taking a deep breath and squeezing Amelia's hand again for comfort. ”But if you deal with Dominic then you can have as much of my blood as you want.” Amelia might want to know just how the vampire intended to take their blood, but if he removed her from the equation the question became void, it didn't matter to Connor how he happened, so long as he could still protect her.
The only way they were going to get out of the alleyway was to agree to the vampire's terms. If he kept his word then Dominic would no longer be a threat and Amelia would be safe, if he didn't then at least the two of them would live see another day. Had the vampire intended to attack them he would have done it by now, clearly Dominic was more of a nuisance than any of them were willing to let on and until the problem was sorted they'd have to form a temporary truce.
