Cassie felt a mixture of relief and embarrassment at that. A light blush coloured her cheeks and she ducked her head for a moment to hide it. It was good to hear she wouldn’t have to strip down to work here and a well placed compliment never went amiss, even if he had rather tastelessly compared her to a stripper. As lines went it wasn’t the sleaziest one she’d heard by a long shot and didn’t hurt that it was coming from Silas either.
She nodded as he described the uniform, already sinking into the rather girly territory of planning a run of outfits. It might even give her an excuse to go shopping, perhaps she could persuade Jaz to go with her and Ed could carry the bags. Cassie cut off that train of thought before it went too far and she started drooling or something. Silas probably already thought she was ditzy, she didn’t want to add brain damaged to the list.
”That suits me fine,” She said with a smile. ”And I’m a bit of a free agent right now, so I’ll likely be able to work any of the hours needed. It wasn’t like she had anything else to do right then except mope and she wanted to avoid that, which was why she was applying for a job in the first place. Having said she needed to look over the contract carefully Cassie was almost ready to sign right there and then, the sooner she signed the sooner she could start. ”I’ll take a look at it today and get it back as soon as I can.” She promised. It was probably better not to appear too keen.
She trailed dutifully after Silas into the rest of the club. Even while the place was closed, without the lights and music, she could tell it was a pretty classy place. Expensive and not entirely tasteless décor at the very least. Still, even a nicely decorated stripper pole was still a stripper pole, there wasn’t much anybody could do to disguise that fact. It wasn’t really somewhere she’d choose to frequent if she wasn’t working there, the relaxed (try grubby) surroundings of places like The Hog were more her style.
The tour, while a little rushed, helped her to understand what exactly she’d have to do once she started. It wasn’t hard to pick up, her previous experience waitressing helped fill in the gaps and clue her in a little to anything Silas might be glossing over. Befriend the bartender if you wanted served quickly, try to get a spot covering the main stage. The people in the VIP rooms might tip better, but she’d get far more work and therefore more tips in the busiest parts of the club.
”Do the waiting staff work it out between themselves which areas they cover or are they assigned different sections of the club?” She asked, following Silas over to the bar and making herself comfortable on one of the stools. The second would work in her favour to start with, because the new girl always got lumbered with the worst spots. In the long run it would probably be better to make a few friends and earn her place though.
Cassie had a pretty good idea of the layout of Scores now and she quickly cottoned on to why Silas had hurried them over to the bar. So alcohol was his addiction of choice. Interesting, but not a subject she was willing to broach with a man she’d known for little more than fifteen minutes. ”I usually leave my hard liquor until after six.” She said with a small quirk of her brows. ”I’ll have a beer if you’re offering though and I think the tour about covered everything. Thank you.”

”They work it out amongst themselves. More of a rotating pattern similar to what the dancers use to make sure no one gets stuck in the slow zones too long and the whole club is being watched. You’ll have to ask the head waitress more about it I’m afraid because I think she changed the routine it after the last girl left. Her name’s Holly - short girl, about 5 foot, mid twenties, got colour-changing streaks in her hair she puts in before she comes to work. You won’t miss her, but I can have her meet you early your first day.”
Ah, more free drinks. Jacaranda was going to kill him. That was after she had broken his arms and legs one at a time. It looked like he was going to have to drop some money in the till later to make up the difference before she got a shot at digging her claws into his back. Still, the thought of his accountant’s aggravation that he was giving away more stock ensured Silas was at least rather amused as he found Cassie a good, reasonably-priced brand of beer. 4th Hallow was it? Yeah, that was a decent enough brand. After popping the bottlecap off on the side of the bar he handed it over with an automatic smile.
”There’s glasses back here if you want one,” he offered, glancing in their direction. If she was pinching free drinks it was going to be rather bad form now if she changed her mind about the job, so as far as Silas was concerned it was a deal sealed. Apparently he was no longer bothering with the pretence of class either and merely drinking the vodka right out of the bottle. Now that the coffee aftertaste was gone it was hitting the spot nicely.
”Shit, that’s right.” ... Crap. He knew he’d forgotten something. Silas clicked his fingered agitatedly as it came to mind. ”Tell Holly she has to show you the security bracelets because I can tell you now I’m going to forget to do it myself later. All staff are required to wear one and it’s the same sort of tech as the Weasley’s Shield Hats, just stops some idiot from trying to literally charm your pants off. There’s a load of them in different colours and styles so you can accessorise everything, and you check them back in after your shift is over for someone else to use. For anything else the bouncers are on call at any time to stick up for you. Just seeing one walk over is enough to get most customers to shut the hell up with no complaints.”
Silas pulled out his wand and pointed it in the direction of Cassie’s CV. The folder rustled for a moment then split into two neatly stacked identical copies in a fashion much like an amoeba. ”I’ll get you the paperwork now then too. Won’t be a sec,” he added, walking around to pick up the top copy. No use in dragging Cassie along, she could enjoy her beer while he hunted though the mess of sheets he called an office. At least he had the sense to leave the bottle behind as he went to look.
It didn’t take long. Silas had relatively given up after about two minutes and just used Accio to see what papers emerged from the draws and shelves. After locating the right ones and jabbing irritably at all the empty fields with his wand to automatically fill in the correct information, he dumped copy of the CV on top of a miscellaneous paper pile and charged back out. Another thing for his to do list next to decent coffee: ask around if there was an auto-organising charm of some sort. Jacaranda would know one, but asking her was akin to prodding a scorpion with an exposed finger.
”There we go,” Silas announced cheerfully, leaving two sets of contracts in front of Cassie, one a bit larger than the other. Without skipping a beat he was also back around the bar and had the vodka back in hand to knock back another mouthful. ”The smaller one is the first one that needs to be sent back. If you think up any other enquiries you can feel free to owl over at any time and someone will be around to answer.”

Cassie gave a little nod and a smile. That sounded fair, at least she wouldn’t be stuck waiting on some dark, lonely corner of the club where the patrons could barely afford to top the dancers let alone the waitresses. It also made sense that Silas wouldn’t be organising aspects as mundane as that, he was the boss and he probably had more important things to be doing, so she wouldn’t be surprised if her contact with him was limited from here on out.
”Holly, right.” Cassie tipped her fingers up in a small salute. She was sure the head waitress would want a few words with her anyway when she started. Namely a warning that if Cassie fucked up she would be out of a job faster than you could say ‘apparate’. It didn’t matter that she’d have a contract, she knew from experience that head waiting staff could make your life a misery until you wanted to quit. Luckily Cassie had no intention of pissing off either of her bosses.
She watched him pick out a beer, not really recognising any of the brands. The kind of places she hung out normally went for cheap and cheerful so a lot of the ones Scores seemed to stock were way out of her price range. Not that she was complaining, Cassie’s approach to drinking was generally that any beer was good beer. ”Thanks,” She accepted the proffered bottle and took a swig, shaking her head with a grin when he offered her a glass. It was a little late for that now.
Cassie picked at the label on her beer bottle absently with one finger as Silas spoke, letting out a small slightly nervous chuckle at the mention of people trying to charm her clothes off. She hadn’t thought of that and it was comforting to think she was going to be working somewhere that had all the bases covered already. Not to mention it was always nice to have bouncers covering her back too. Bouncers were generally nice guys, she’d even dated a few.
“I’m sure I can remember that.” She said, a little distracted by the thought of accessorising. One of the things she hated about starting out working in a new pace was all the new things you had to remember. It would be much easier once she fell into a routine, but for now it was all a little overwhelming. Cassie wasn’t even sure she could remember the name of the waitress she was supposed to find when she started, oh well, colourful hair should be easy to find.
The charm Silas used to create a copy of her CV was pretty nifty. Cassie didn’t know any spells as cool as that and she watched as her document split into two with awe and more than a little envy. She’d never bothered to take her education further than what school had taught her, so her magical ability was pretty much limited to the basics. Still, she got by just fine, muggles even had these cool machines called photocopiers.
While Silas was off taking care of the paperwork Cassie took another swig of her beer with a contented sigh. He didn’t take long though and she barely had time to snoop by peering behind the bar before he was back with the two contracts in hand. She flipped through the smaller one, reading the information as quickly as possible without actually skipping anything. ”I’m pretty happy to sign this now.” She said, pulling out her wand and double tapping the contract so that her scrawled signature appeared in the appropriate place.
”Here,” Cassie held the first contract out for him to take back. She took a final drink of her beer, almost finishing it and slipped from the barstool, grabbing her CV and the other contract off the bar. ”I better be going. I’ll have everything signed by the time my five days are up.” She promised with a grin. ”Thanks for the beer and, you know, for employing me.” The day hadn’t been a total bust after all. Ed probably wouldn’t be too happy about it, but Cassie felt finding a job was hard enough in this sleepy little town, let alone one he’d approve of.
