Vivian stared back at Dacian with a mixture of worry and confusion. Cassie was obviously a sore topic and for a second she was worried he was going to do something against the tree, but it looked like his time away had let him get a handle on that rather infamous temper, praise the Lord. He could be damn scary sometimes.
Still, Vivian was detecting a certain hypocrisy considering how many times Dacian had told her off for acting like a child. “God, you’re vorse zhan me,” she sighed exasperatedly and giving him a fitting look.
What had happened exactly? Had Cassie done something against him? He’d said he almost died for her, and although Vivian wasn’t filled in on all the details that seemed more like a reason to see her again, not to stay away. “Vhy go through all zhat just to run avay?” she challenged. “You’ll risk death for her, just to never see her again? She’s dead to you eizer vay zhen! Give me three good reasons!”

The older vampire turned, nose wrinkling in the way that usually preceded a raised voice and words that were not kind. “You think—” He caught himself and looked away, demonstrating that fragile restraint again. He ran a hand through his short cropped hair, looking back when he thought he could continue without shouting. “You think I ran away? I had no choice.” He didn’t elaborate. There was a lot to tell her on the matter, but he didn’t want to overload her.
He gave a humourless chuckle. “At the time I wasn’t thinking. I was impulsive, I was stupid. I made a mistake.” A difficult confession to make, but Vivian had to know that it wouldn’t turn out alright all of the time. “Three reasons?” He raised a scar-dissected brow and managed not to feel patronised. “You’re my main reason; I need to look after you. If I really had died, you’d be alone.”

“You’re saying saving Cassie vos a mistake?” Vivian repeated incredulously. Was he serious? Vivan couldn’t even imagine how it could ever possibly be a mistake to help someone you cared about, even if they weren’t that fond of you back. It was times like this she caught a glimpse into just how heartless her sire could truly be sometimes, and honestly, it scared her. Precisely the reason she’d decided a long time ago that she wasn’t going to end up like him.
Still, he was no threat to her, at least. Maybe. He’d threatened to put her in a box and ship her away enough times.
“And zhat’s not a reason,” Vivian pointed out quickly, folding her arms and looking defiant. “You can look after me AND be talking to Cassie at zeh same time.”

No.” He shook his head, realising the misunderstanding. “It was a trap. And I ran into it without thinking. Because I cared.” Not entirely true – he’d thought about it, but had dismissed the idea of spending any longer thinking about it when he’d heard her scream. The hair rose on his arms and on the back of his neck just remembering the sound. He needed to think about something else, quickly.
“How can you tell me that’s not a reason? Are you telling me you’re less important that somebody else? You’re practically a daughter to me – my first loyalty is to you.” He said earnestly. “I almost failed you completely. I almost left you alone because I let myself become distracted.”
He had many more reasons, but not one he could bring himself to say aloud. He steeled himself, and picked one that exposed less of his emotion. “Reason two: If word gets around that I’m here, I’ll have to leave. It’s not safe for me here, and that means by proxy its not safe for you.”

“Are you telling me you’re less important that somebody else?” Dacian argued and Vivian huffed. Honestly, she thought so, but if she brought that up Dacian would just contest that and then they’d be on a whole other argument.
“No, But I’m saying zhat you can still haff me and Cassie at zeh same time. It’s not like it’s vone or zeh uzzer!
“Oh my GOD I can’t believe you only just got back and ve’re already haffing an argument!” Vivian complained loudly, uncrossing her arms with a petulant stamp of her foot. Her voice was now starting to rise in pitch like it always did when things were starting to get to her. “Vot are you afraid of?! I’ve been here for months vithout you and zeh vorst sing zhat happened vos Ed shot himself by accident!”

Wait, what? Edward shot himself in the foot? Dacian looked decidedly smug. If there was any reason he should visit the village – mocking Edward should be it. He chuckled to himself, imagining the spectacle of that oaf pulling the trigger on his own foot like the stooge that he was. Priceless.
He sobered a little as the rest of her words reasserted themselves. “I can’t tell you what I’m afraid of.” He said solemnly, his eyes dark. He’d seen a lot of the world, he had a lot of nightmare material that would reduce Vivian to a jabbering wreck. Even the relevant fears concerning his progeny were too much for the young girl to know. Better to just keep it all to himself.
The older vampire glanced away, something like embarrassment in his expression. “You weren’t exactly alone, were you?” He skirted the topic by moving back to her favourite. “You’re too young to understand – I can’t see her, she can’t know I’m here. Protecting you and protecting anybody else is mutually exclusive. If my loyalties are spit, there’s a chance I will have to make the choice. It’s best if I never have to do that again. You’re my only concern now.”

What? Oh come on, he was definitely worse than a child. This was going nowhere.
“Fine!” Vivian snapped, throwing her hands in the air. “I just thought you loved her that’s all!” she continued – loudly. “It doesn’t matter now anyvay, she’s dating Edvard and I only vanted you to see her to give her peace of mind, because she thinks it’s partly her fault you died!” Okay, granted, Cassie’d never said it but that was the impression she’d always gotten for some reason.
“Zhat and somesing big happened but it’s not my place to tell you,” she added, suddenly looking a little sheepish.

And besides, that’s impossible.” Love was impossible for him – he’d lost that ability when he’d died the first time round. Or so he believed. Vivian was intent on taunting him. He had simply been unhealthily obsessed; obsessed enough to get his neck broken for her.
Like Vivian helpfully pointed out, she was dating Edward. And Dacian knew full well that he just couldn’t ‘talk’ to her. He pulled a sour expression at the idea that she blamed herself. It wasn’t her fault – it was his for even coming here in the first place. Who was he kidding? This was her fault. It was always her fault.
Apparently Vivian was not done pulling his strings, because she just had to drop a bomb and leave it there, armed with no timer. The grumpy gave way to concern before he could help himself. “What? What happened? Is she alright?” He scowled and drew back. “Never mind, I don’t care.” He lied, crossing his arms defensively. “I’d rather we discussed something important, like your future.”

“That’s impossible,” Dacian argued, and Vivian fixed him with an incredulous look. He didn’t seriously believe that did he? That was crazy talk. If it was so impossible for vampires to fall in love apparently her condition was just a spell gone wrong then. How else could Dacian explain what she had with Scotty?
“Don’t be stupid, it’s not like you don’t haff a soul.” she countered hotly, arms crossed. “You’re not some kind of mindless inferius. Everyvone has feelings vether zhey vant to admit it or not, sink of me and Scotty. You’re just doing a very good job of trying to rationalise yours.” And then some.
Then Dacian had to go and prove her point for her by suddenly getting worried and trying to pull an immediate one-eighty.
“Hah! See!” Vivian cried victoriously, lifting an arm to point at him while a wide grin crept onto her face. “I’m not telling you anysing! You haff to ask her yourself!”

Dacian was not falling for the bait again - he was going to ignore any and all references to the woman who almost got him killed from now on. Although explaining to Vivian she no longer had a soul was going to be difficult. He'd hoped she'd figure it out on her own. There was a price for immortality, always.
"Intelligence is in the mind, Vivian. The soul is something else, and I lost mine long ago. The Inferi are raised by another - their intelligence lost in their decaying body unlike our bodies that are held in the state that they died in. An Inferi's soul has already had it's destination chosen, and it will go to Heaven if they led a worthy life. A vampire is raised by the Devil's magic, and he takes our souls as his price for our immortality."
It was a fact he'd come to terms with long ago, and he delivered it sourly, as if there was still a part of him that thought it was unfair.
