Pre-Oscar, Seth had never felt the loneliness that the caretaker had. Although he hadn’t spent the majority of his time with other people, he had always had a small group of friends. Well not always, but he had for the last few years, meeting David, Mark and Michael at the wedding certainly made his life slightly nicer, they were what Seth was to Oscar in many ways. Only Seth didn’t miss them half as much as he did Oscar, and he saw Oscar more than he ever had the others.
Seth hadn’t put much thought into what he was going to do after Hogwarts, when he was younger he had wanted to go to university to study herpetology. Meaning he would get to look at and play with lizards all day long and be paid to do it. Sounded like a good plan still. The only thing stopping him was the complete lack of Muggle certifications. He’d just have to try and get into a Wizarding animal department either at the ministry or anywhere really. He’d happily accept Oscar to be a very big part in his post-school life. Truth be told, he hadn’t considered it without.
The toast dream hadn’t been the only one Seth had had that afternoon, it had just been the start of a series of dreams, each of which waking him up more and more confused. Being chased by toast was just the beginning. He had had a Quidditch dream and two others with Oscar, not that he was about to reiterate the content of those dreams to anybody, least of all Oscar, ”Don’t worry about it,” he was used to weird dreams. His friends would never have classed him as sane in the first place but he often dreamt of giant lizards and toast assailants.
Before the article incident, Seth had never realised that his presence at Hogwarts had ever been noted by anybody. In a way the only reason people had started to see him was because of Ashley. He caused a stir and in that, his friendship with Seth forced the brunette into the spotlight, not something he had particularly enjoyed. Seth had never read the gossip paper until Ash had shown it to him and his appearance in it, and he had no intention of ever picking up a copy of it again.
Seth was glad he wasn’t the only one would take to fiddling with his clothing, the oxymoronic state of their clothing made Seth smile. His too big and him too small, and Oscar, his clothing too small himself too big. Too big for the clothing at least, he was a normal height after all, even with his large hands, ”No worries,” ceasing his fiddling with his jacket he pulled his hat from his head once again and started spinning it between his two hands.
Seeing Oscar smiling was probably one of the biggest highlights of his day, it meant so much to him to see him smile. Life was slowly changing for the better, no, not slowly, bloody god damned fast, it was actually quite belittling to think quite how much Oscar had changed in the time he had known him. He was more open he was smiling, hell he was laughing. It was nice. Nobody had ever really meant that much to Seth for him to really care what they did. He took smile and laughs for granted, like they were usual. Meeting Oscar made him realise that they weren’t, smiles and laughs were something you had to work at.
Seth nodded in reply to Oscar question, he watched him as he thought, thinking it probably was best not to ask him about his past in the future. He just wanted to learn more about his best friend. They’d spoken so much about other things but he still didn’t know what his favourite colour was. He knew his youngest brother was in his first year and he had twin siblings who were a year younger and his eldest brother was two years older, all of which had attended Hogwarts. ”Gouging on sweets not high up on the priority list then?” Seth asked in attempt to lighten the mood, stirring away from family was a good move in conversation.

It had to be said, some of Oscar's loneliness was self inflicted. But only because he genuinely believed that no one would want to talk to him, or be his friend. He was a freak, in both worlds. The didn't quite fit into either the muggle or wizarding world. In the Wizarding World he was the powerless boy from a fairly respected family, the Squib - which outcasted him. In the Muggle World, he was the quiet one which sat at the back of every class and was victim to many a prank - which outcasted him. The more it happened, the more Oz let it happen. It seemed easier that way.
"After school" for Oz had always been trying to find somewhere he belonged. He tried the office work for a while, but didn't even last a week. The insufferable "office types" made him feel worse than the pureblood wizards had. That was when he'd turned to Professor McGonagoll. He'd lasted longer than a week at Hogwarts (obviously) but it had taken him a little over three years to finally feel like he had somewhere to belong. And it was Seth's doing. Realising that, Oz started feeling a little panicky at the thought of not knowing what to do whilst Seth was away for Christmas. He knew he always went home.
Although being told to not worry about it, Oscar still wore a look of utter confusion. He looked at Seth, and decided that his fluffy haired friend was weird. But weird was good. He had to be weird if he considered Oscar a friend. But toast dreams was something else. "Ok..." He agreed, trying to wipe the confused look off his face. A thought struck him, and he scratched his head nervously - not quite being able to believe he was about to ask a direct question. "Do you dream in colour?" The words came out quickly as if Oscar couldn't wait to get rid of them. If Seth asked him to repeat it, he'd just say something random about toast - he didn't think he'd be able to ask it again.
Being the caretaker who was the butt of most jokes around the first years, Oscar knew that his presence had been taken in by the school. He just wondered if Seth had known he'd been noticed. Oscar had noticed him. And he'd noticed that other students, of both genders, had noticed him. There was something fairly watchable about Seth - the happy face, the fluffy hair - he was what those silly, giggly girls would call "cute". Oscar didn't believe "cute" was the right word. He was a fan of "amazing".
Oscar never really had much luck with clothes. Everything he wore made him look like a pillock - so he believed - and gloves never fit him. He found he had to buy fingerless gloves because they were the only ones which didn't make his fingers look half their actual size. They weren't too bad, it was only the winter months when he feared getting frostbite. But he still had all his fingers - for now. Chances were he'd get one twisted so badly in the thread he was playing with it's go purple and drop off. Sure he could make some joke about being a drop tail lizard, but his finger wouldn't actually grow back.
He dropped the thread and focussed on trying to make his smile not look so nervous or awkward. The speed at which he was changing hit Oscar too. It was a little scary, but because Seth was there it didn't seem that bad. In fact - it was great. Life was for the alive and it was high time Oscar started acting alive! He wanted to thank Seth there and then, but bit his tongue. How weird would that sound? Just randomly thanking him. Weirder than the toast dream, Oscar bet.
It always amazed Oscar how patient Seth was, expression ever calm whilst Oscar hummed and harred, trying to pick his way through the past which was like a dense forest of thorns in his mind. To be honest, Oscar wanted to learn about himself. He didn't know his own favourite colour - he'd probably say grey because it was the only coour he knew. He didn't care much for the family who'd all but disowned him. All he cared about was Seth. "Not really. Ma thinks it's tacky to consume vast amounts of sweets on holidays." Oscar looked down to his hands, picking at one of the callouses on his palm whilst chewing his lip a little.
Seth's attempt to lighten the mood hadn't gone unnoticed, and Oscar felt a little bad for bringing it down still. The nerves tightened in his stomach. He was gearing himself up to thank Seth, but it was proving harder than he'd thought. Suddenly the words "thank you" didn't seem enough. Taking in a deep breath, Oscar looked up to Seth. "Thank you, Seth."

Seth probably could have made a new life for himself at Hogwarts, come out of his shell a little bit. He had every intention of starting life a new, finding himself people he could call his friends, until his father left. That knocked him for six and he crawled back into his shell more than he had ever been in it before. Now, aged seventeen, he saw himself somewhat destined to stay there, it didn’t seem likely that crowds would ever be anything he would be good with, but he didn’t mind that so much. He had all the friends he needed.
Seth hadn’t given much thought to the Christmas holidays, all he knew is he didn’t want to leave Oscar on his own. But he didn’t want to say anything until he was certain that his mum would left Oscar stay with them over the holiday. She was pretty easy going so he couldn’t imagine it would be much of a problem. Although staying at Hogwarts wasn’t out of the question, he knew he wouldn’t have a good Christmas on his own in his dorm then he would with his mother and sister. At least Jaz was in Hogsmeade these days, but he still rarely saw her.
There wasn’t a problem with weird. Seth liked weird, he could understand weird, which was well, weird. A question? An actual question had left Oscar’s lips without what seemed much effort. Seth smiled slightly before answering, “I don’t really remember. I guess so,” he said, shrugging slightly. I tended to be a miracle if Seth remembered his dreams at all. Being chased by toast was one of those things that stayed with you, “Why?” Seth found himself asking, he had never really considered dreaming in monochrome or colour much of anything really. It was just one of those weird things psychics liked to ease people about.
No, Seth hadn’t known he had been noticed. He didn’t even know that Oscar had really known about him before their chance meeting. Knowing that girls referred to him as ‘cute’ would probably had scared Seth, there was nothing more offending than being called ‘cute’ when a young adult male. ‘Amazing’ on the other hand, that would have made him blush. He didn’t see himself as anything particularly special. He was just ordinary and quiet. ‘Amazing’ covered Oscar’s progress.
He also looked far from a pillock. Negative images were something Seth was keen to make a thing of the past. Hat was probably one of the next mental steps he should take in his grand scheme. But mentally making Oscar change how he saw himself was something that could probably be deemed impossible – but it was something Seth was willing to try. He wanted to help. Besides knowing Oscar thought about cracking a lizard related joke would have made Seth proud. Jokes were new too. And anything lizard related would make Seth giggle like one of those idiotic girls that called him ‘cute’. Shameful but true.
Patience had always been one of Seth’s better attributes. Mainly because getting in a temper got you noticed, the calmer you stayed the more likely you were to blend into the background than stand out in the crowd. Knowing his family had pretty much disowned Oscar for being who he was made Seth a little sad. Made him think of his own arse of a father before he remembered that he had two other family members that loved him. Plus adding Oscar into that equation too made him happy, he cared about the guy, more than he should, but he didn’t care. Oscar was his friend and he wanted him to be happy.
”Pah! Right, Christmas I am filling you full of sweets and chocolate. I don’t care what you say!” he answered. Stooping his head slightly so he could look Oscar in the eye as he played with his hands, ”Hell I’ll do it right now!” he said nodding his head in the direction of the food table. Brim full of all the sweets you could possibly imagine and then some.
Seth straighten himself vertically when Oscar looked up. He smiled up at him, a look with soon turned intoa quizzical look, ”What for?” he asked, biting is own lip before smiling again. He knew he had helped Oscar, but the majority of it was down to Oscar. He could only do so much the rest was down to him.

Hogwarts was supposed to be Oscar's new start too. But he couldn't let go of the past, no matter how hard it hurt. He just knew that even if he tried to forget his past would crawl out of its dark corner in his mind and lock Oscar in its tight grip once more. Probably digging in little hooks to make it hurt worse, just so he'd learn to not forget it again. Oz was definitely set in his ways... That was what he'd thought before he'd met Seth. Things were changing now though. It was strange. He just hoped his past didn't return.
As for Christmas, Oscar would do what he always did. Clear up the cracker mess after the Christmas meal left by the teacher and the students who stayed behind. And any stray wrapping paper which he stumbled across. He wouldn't get any presents, would send any either. (Though, he was considering getting Seth something. What, though, was anyone's guess. Something Quidditch related?) But he certainly wouldn't be joining the Christmas feast the left over wizards enjoyed. It wasn't his place to, for he wasn't a wizard. Just the lowly Squib Caretaker.
Oscar was too busy trying not to die of embarressment - he'd asked a question - to be considering the merits of being weird and whether or not he liked it. Seth's smile put him at ease, for he knew that when Seth smiled it would be followed with niceness. Well, rather a lacking of nastiness. "I was just wondering." Oscar answered, he was good with answering questions. He'd done that his entire life. "It's just that mine are grey, and I wanted to see if anyone else dreamt in grey." He fisted his hands, rubbed the knuckles together and kept his eyes trained on them - a nervous habit.
The word 'amazing' should never be put next to Oscar's name, unless there was a negative somewhere in the sentence. That was Oscar's firm belief. How could the word amazing be near to him when he was in such a place as this? Hogwarts was amazing. Magic was amazing. Wizards were amazing. Oscar, however, was not. He was black and white scenery surrounded by a rainbow of colour. And to be honest, he didn't even know he was making progress for it felt that every step he took, he took two back.
Having never really thought of himself in any other light, negativity had become normality for Oscar. Everyone else saw him as a nobody, who looked out of place, so why shouldn't he? Oscar wasn't one for going against the crowd, or the grain, or anything for that matter. Befriending Seth was the first time he'd done something he ordinarily wouldn't have done. Staying at the library corner that first day had been a huge gamble for Oscar, gambling what litte confidence he had left for the sake of a friend. He was glad he'd taken the gamble, but he wasn't quite prepared for gambling the chance of making Seth laugh. Lizard jokes would just have to wait.
No matter how hard Oscar tried to be just part of the background, he found that he was often pulled to the front - through no means of his own. He'd always tried to stay in the shadows of his pushy, more out going, extroverted siblings - but his lacking of magic had always put him in his father's disappointed gaze. At school, he sat at the back and said nothing - but the bullies made a bee-line for him because he was the odd one out. And now, at Hogwarts, he tried to be just the guy who mopped the floors - yet first years used him for punchlines. It was impossible for Oscar to just fade into the grey of the walls. Sometimes he wondered if he had some sort of beacon on his head, just crying out to the masses to notice him.
He blinked in surprised, and let out a squeak which might have sounded like, "Okay!" He was all a litte bit shocked. Seth wanted to see him, over Christmas? He couldn't imagine the younger guy stopping here at Hogwarts - for Oz knew how much Seth loved his mother and sister - so did that mean he was going back with Seth? Could he do that? Would Hogwarts allow it? Oz stopped his thoughts right there - of course Seth wasn't actually considering asking Oscar Peterson to stay at his for Christmas. He looked at the sweets, as a means of ending that thought altogether, and instantly felt a little queasy. "Ur... I don't know..."
The quizzical look seemed odd on Seth's face, for to Oz he'd always seemed to be so confident. Oz blushed a little as he scratched the back of his head - he felt supremely stupid for doing this now. "Just for everything I guess."
