Tenebrus had his nose right next to Cypress’s hip, just staring with his glassy white eyes at where the rat was being kept. The boy couldn’t see him, so if he didn’t touch him he could- Woah, that was close! Cypresses hand suddenly came right at him as he waved it and Tenebrus only just managed to pull up in time with a surprised grunt to avoid getting backhanded in the face. Silly boy, he should be more careful.
Now that he had his head up, he noticed there was not one kid any more, but two. God, he’d been so focused on the rat he didn’t even notice the second one approaching. Apparently this one couldn’t see him eith- Oooohhhh, yes!... Warm, sizzling, a strong distinctive odour. With an excited squeal Tenebrus launched away from Cypress as made a dash at August, probably bashing the rat-boy in the head with his wing as he went.
Okay, so it wasn’t as great as a hotdog and a rat would probably make a juicier meal (yum, blood), but a bacon sandwich being presented in the hand with absolutely no associated difficulty in stealing it was too good an offer to pass up, especially considering the other one was determined to put up a fight.
Careful not to make his plans so obvious this time, Tenebrus pranced around August once until he was in-line with the sandwich to snatch it. If he knew what it was like to take candy from a baby, this was probably what he’d compare it to. Lowering his head to be eyelevel with the food, Tenebrus suddenly lurched forwards, attempting to yoink it right out of August’s hand and keep running straight past with it.

August gave a little wave as Cypress grinned back at him, but his face fell into a half pout when the Gryffindor was the slightest bit short with him. He continued on his way closer wondering what he could have done to get on Cy's nerves, it had seemed like a perfectly reasonable suggestion to him, what other reason could anybody have for waving their wand around at nothing? Apart from being attacked by some invisible creature, that did make a bit more sense and August wasn't about to doubt Cy's word on the matter.
"Oh." August said, moving closer despite the fact that he could be walking into a potentially dangerous situation. This was why he so often failed the more practical parts of his defence against the dark arts classes, he was too quick to try and help his friends. That and his unerring belief that nobody would ever be mean enough to actually try to hurt somebody. "Are you okay Cypress? Has it hurt you?" He asked, fishing into his pocket to find his wand and completely forgetting about the bacon sandwich gripped casually in his other hand.
He was reminded of it rather suddenly when something snatched the food from his fingertips. August yelped with surprise, looking around wildly, and rather futilely, to try and spot the culprit. "What was that?" August asked, voice wavering as he was more than a bit unnerved by having his breakfast stolen from him. Come to think of it the same thing had happened in care of magical creatures when Professor Argall had introduced them to thestrals by getting them all to hold on to a steak and waiting for the invisible creatures to get hungry.
If August had ever had a slanderous thought about anybody he might have assumed the Slytherin Head of House had done it on purpose with the hope of somebody getting hand, or at the very least a finger, bitten off in the process. "I think it might be a thestral." August told Cypress a little uncertainly, his worries easing a little now that he knew the invisible creature was just hungry and not in the sense that it wanted to eat either of the Hogwarts students.

Cypress would have answered August right away, if it hadn't been for the fact he was clocked round the head by an invisible god-knew-what. He stumbled forward a few steps from the blow and one hand immediately went to his head, as if rubbing it would really make the pain go away. It wasn't so hard that it would actually do him any real damage, but it still hurt (especially messing with his pride). Looking up to see August's sandwich disappear, he shrugged.
"Not till just now," he replied, rubbing his head a little more before frowning. "Are you alright? Did it get your hand?" he asked, concerned, and a little surprised when August attempted to identify the creature hassling them. He'd heard of them, of course, but he didn't know a whole lot about them. He smiled sheepishly at August. "Is that a sixth year thing or did I just miss that lesson?"
He looked at the apparently occupied but not appearing so space in which the thestral ought to be and from which it stole August's sandwich. "Okay, so, how do we get rid of it?"

The best way to describe Tenebrus’s current state of mind was something along the lines of ‘triumphant’. He had a sandwich! Oh yeah, uh huh, oh yeah, uh huh! His next objective was pretty much to slow off. Tail whipping around gleefully, Tenebrus lifted his head and neck high to display the sandwich proudly and began trotting around the pair with as showy of a pace as he could put on. His sandwich now, not theirs, hahaha!
Satisfied that he’d had his fun, the thestral moved a little way away to make sure they didn’t steal it back and started instinctively thrashing the sandwich left to right in the same fashion as a dog tries to play with a new toy. Also, more disturbingly, the same way a canine breaks the neck and or spine of an animal they catch. Satisfied the sandwich was ‘dead’, he wolfed it down in a hurry then went nosing for any pieces of bread or bacon that could have been tossed away.
Poo. All gone. Maybe there was more? The older boy was a better bet, he’d already gotten something off him and the younger one apparently wanted to eat the rat himself. August it was then. Tenebrus meandered back in his direction, going through a dirt patch and leaving footprints as he did so. Hmm, yes, he smelled something for sure. Another sandwich? Gleefully he quickened his walk and stood next to August, nudging his pocket containing the soon-to-be-his sandwich with his nose demandingly.

August moved instinctively closer to Cypress, feeling safer with his friend nearby and wanted to try and prevent any further accidents that would the Gryffindor injury. It wasn't that he was particularly afraid of the thestral, but it was still unnerving to not be able to see it, instead having to rely on the sound of it's hooves on the lawn. "Are you alright?" He asked, concerned, eyes fixed on Cypress's head where he was rubbing it. "Perhaps we should go to the hospital wing, you might have concussion." August suggested, biting his lip uncertainly.
"I'm fine though," He assured, waving the fingers of his hand that had once held the sandwich experimentally at Cy ad if to prove they were all still in working order. "We did a bit of theory work on them at the end of last year, to compliment the lessons on unicorns." August explained happily, the unicorns had been amazing to see, although he hadn't much liked being in the forest at night, so much so that he'd only seen a brief glimpse of silvery white and then gone back to hiding behind his hands. "So I guess you haven't got to that bit of the course yet. Professor Argall said we might get a practical lesson on them soon."
He yelped in surpise when he felt something nudging at the pocket of his robes and looked down instinctively even though the creature was completely invisible to him. "Still hungry?" He chuckled eyes fixed on the point where he thought the thestral should be, based on the persistent pressure at his hip. "They pull the school carriages you know." August told Cy as he fished into his pocket for the other sandwich. "Why would we want to get rid of it? I think it's cool, I wish I could see them, but I don't want to see anyone die."

Cypress shook his head, removing his hand even though he really wanted to leave it there. Somehow, holding an injury always seemed to help. He gave August a grin, both apologetic and to show that he was mostly fine. "I'm good, see? No nurses for me," he said, a little wary of the new nurse and her kid. He didn't do kids, and he was kind of scared going anywhere near her in case he had to interact with it. Him. Whatever the kid was. At least August was fine, though.
August's yelp put him on guard and he looked around, knowing full well that it was absolutely useless to do so since he hadn't been able to see the thestral in the first place, before finding August mostly at ease. He frowned but he was somewhat relieved. If he was so calm, it couldn't be all bad. He raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Really? No way," he replied, although that would make sense. "Huh, I thought it was just magic or something. Go figure."
"Um..." he trailed off, unsure of how to reply. "I was freaking out?" he admitted, feeling a little faint at the mention of death. He didn't like death a whole lot, it brought on too many bad thoughts. "Why would you have to see someone die? Is it a weird cult thing?"

Come on come on come on come on. The boy was almost pulling the sandwich out in slow motion. The two kids were suddenly quite distracted with each other and even though Tenebrus suspected the subject was about him, he was feeling a bit left out. Bah, let them socialise if they wanted to, as long as he got that damn sandwich!
The second an opportunity presented to snatch the food away without getting a mouthful of huffepuff fingers thrown in presented itself, Tenebrus launched his face at it in a very snakelike fashion to pluck it free. Succes for Operation Sandwich Seize! In a flash he’d turned tail (with a very real possibility he’d just hit August with it as he turned) and had moved again to safe distance to attempt to eat it. It was a little warmer than the last one as it hadn’t been exposed to the air, which he was quite happy about.
Although, now he realised why the boy in group yellow didn’t immediately hand it over. It was covered in something that tasted, well, not at all like bread. Confused, Tenebrus dumped the sandwich on the ground and spent a two or three minutes trying to work the napkin off it.

"Well, if you're sure." August trailed off reluctantly, not entirely convinced that Cypress was as fine as he was insisting. He was a little disappointed, he liked Reese and her kid was just adorable, but there would be plenty of reason in the future to make a trip to the hospital wing, he was definitely clumsy enough. This time when the thestral went for the sandwich in his hand he was already half expecting it. He let out only a small gasp and released his grip, not trying to hold on even though the napkin was still wrapped around it.
"I'm not entirely certain why." He admitted, still looking down at his hand even though the sandwich was long gone. "The textbook didn't really explain it and I was too nervous to ask the Professor in case he thought it was a stupid question." While August seemed to have avoided losing any fingers to the persistent creature he wasn't so lucky when it came to the thestral's tail. He let out a breathless 'oof' of surprise as it hit him squarely in the chest and stumbled backwards a good few paces.
August wasn't exactly known for his graceful coordination and so moving clumsily back at rather fast pace spelled downfall for him. He tripped over his own foot and landed in a heap on the grass, looking forlornly up at Cy. Rubbing at his chest where the tail had hit him, August glanced over at the ground where the half eaten sandwich had appeared. "Do you think it'll be ok?" He asked Cypress, concerned. "I mean what if napkins are bad for thestrals?"

Cypress nodded vigourously, forgetting his pounding head for a moment and moving a hand back up to it after he finished nodding. That wasn't one of the smartest things he'd done thus far in his life. "Yep, sure as sure can be," he replied, trying to reassure the Hufflepuff. He felt a little glow of warmth inside, it was so nice when August was worried about him! It made him feel special and he just knew that he had a stupid grin on his face now...
The sandwich disappeared from August's hands and floated away to be dropped on the ground and he felt somewhat triumphant that the creature couldn't unwrap the damn thing. He turned to see August falling over and winced as the guy landed on the ground, looking back up at him. Cypress gave him a sympathetic smile and held out a hand to offer to help him up. "I don't see how much damage it can really do, it's only paper, mate." Well, he assumed it was only paper. Who knew what wizards put in napkins? Cypress had been surprised when he'd first found out that wizards even had things like napkins, to be honest about it. He'd just assumed everything would be amazingly different... And it was, but... well, it didn't really matter did it? "Honestly," he addd to placate the older teen before he asked again.

The napkin evidently wasn’t so easy to remove and Tenebrus ended up swallowing some of it in his quest for the sandwich. Unphased he nosed the remaining piece of paper around the ground in the scant hope a bit of bacon was left in it, but no such luck. When that proved fruitless Tenebrus simply waltzed back over to the two of them making a series of ‘contented’ noises that still managed to sound like an eagle chick in pain.
After attempting to shove his nose into both of Augusts pockets then snuffling around his chest back, and even hair as though it was possible to store things in there, Tenebrus was forced to accept the fact August had nothing left on him. Cypress was his next victim but a similar examination proved that aside from the rat, which he had already established wasn’t for him, he had nothing either.
Tenebrus gave an agitated squawk. Oh come on! How little did those people need to eat? Just on his own he was capable of consuming about 600 pounds of dead cow in almost one sitting and these little freaks could make do with one rat and two sandwiches? No wonder humans had never evolved four legs; they didn’t eat enough to maintain that sort of extra body weight!
There was nothing left here now, and hopefully by now the herd was feeling a little more sociable. Without a farewell of any sort Tenebrus turned around and started walking back in the direction of the forest. How long would it take the boys to work out he was missing?
