Alexis was relieved not to hear a reply to her comment about the cat. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle it politely if it was another joke putting her as the butt of it. Her day hadn’t ended well and she was still a little on edge from her run in with the thestrals. Pulling out a few more leaves in her hair she ran her fingers through it to try and detangle it as much as she could without a proper comb.
Keeping her eyes on Starke’s face she let him talk, explain his whereabouts in the last month and tried not to look too surprised at the news. St. Mungo’s…yet another boy she knew that had spent time in that hospital for some odd reason. She hoped that this wasn’t a sign for the future; anyone she ended up spending time with the XY chromosomes landing in St. Mungo’s. Shaking her head she opened her mouth to reply then closed it, her forehead having a little crease in it as she tried to make sense of the news. It wasn’t a big deal personally.. she didn’t think less of anyone who spent time there. The one..well two people now, that she knew hadn’t gone there for something self-inflicted.
”You were.. at St. Mungo’s.” She said it as a statement, though her facial expression was one she had when asking a question or trying to make sense of something. Well of course that’s where he was, he just said so didn’t he? But Lex wanted to makes sure she heard right. ”Okay..” Spell damage. That didn’t sound like anything good. She tried to remember where Aiden was at when he spent time at the hospital but couldn’t remember. She scooted closer to the bed looking at him ”Exactly what made you end up there?”

It did not seem as serious a case when he heard it out loud. He had spared her quite a few details, but over all it seemed as normal a visit as two individuals might take to the two separate floors of the wizarding hospital. Of course, his case had been anything but ordinary. Few could stump the skilled healers of St. Mungo’s, but as he had been told, few did not escape the jaws of the gigantic spiders of the Forbidden Forest. Most were drug off and devoured thereafter. Lucky him.
The nature of his visit into the forest that night had been less embarrassing than the consequences, so he was more than okay in sharing that with her. Her interest in his story, as she moved closer was intriguing. He too leaned forward, as though it was a secret. It was just a ploy to be closer to her of course, but just the same, he lowered his voice to seem more mysterious. “What if I told you I was fighting a giant Acromatula?” He asked as though he knew this was impressive.
Cedric certainly had never taken one on in the same dire circumstances. Of course… he had done the Triwizard tournament, which had since been banned again since his death. And he had died taking at the hand of the most feared wizard of previous generations. Still, in his own safe little world, Starke could not help but feel this proved him of the same blood as his half-brother, and he might as well own up to the fact that he had indeed taken one on. Even if he technically would have lost if he hadn’t been saved.

”Fighting a giant what?” That was the first thought to pop into her head and apparently she said it out loud. Acromatula..what was that? She’d heard of it before then she gasped a little ”One of those giant spiders in the forest?” she whispered, staring at him like he was crazy. ”What.. why..” she sputtered for a moment, sitting up straight then she just stood up from the stool. Why would he be in the forest in the first place? Let alone go ambling far enough into the thing to run into one of those nasty spiders.
She wanted to shake Starke and hug him: she couldn’t decide which to do first. He could have been killed! What was he thinking? ”Starke.. have you lost your brain?” she asked huffing out a little laugh thinking the whole idea was incredulous. Running her hands through her hair she paced a little between the beds before eventually sitting back down on the stool. The rest of the story still needed to be told.
”Alright..tell me the rest of the story. I know that’s not all there is to it” she said trying to remain calm and not throttle him for being stupid, because frankly she didn’t know if it was stupidity that got him out there or one of those stupid dares. If it was one of those dares she just might have to go after whoever dared him to find one of those creatures and hex them into next week.

Starke could not help but feel his chest swell slightly when Lex realized what the creature was and gasped in surprise. Maybe fear… or better yet… concern? A smug little grin was growing at the corner of his mouth as she sorted out the idea of mild-mannered Starke Diggory physically trying to take down a 15-foot spider. The truth was, he often did stupid things when someone needed his help, has had been the case this time. No, he was not totally daft to just go meandering about the forest to look for crazy shit to do, but when an opportunity presented itself, the shadow he lived in forbade him from backing down. Some might call this courage, but he knew better.
He watched Alexis pace, but stayed quiet. He was not about to interrupt her, especially when he was entertaining ideas of her collapsing down next to him and realizing just how frightened she was at the idea of losing him. A ridiculous notion really. She had managed a month a half without even knowing where he went, hadn’t she? But a boy was allowed his fantasy wasn’t he?
That was all it was to remain, as she resumed her position on the chair. Damn. He should have put his feet up on it, real casual like, or something. “Well sure. I mean, I didn’t just go in there for the fun of it. I followed some Ravenclaw girl in there, being a prefect and what not. And we ran into some trouble. What else was I supposed to do? Let it eat her and run for my life? Wouldn’t be very Gryffindor-ish of me.” He told her, saving her the ‘heroic’ and later gory details.

When she realized the look on his face was one of smugness when she paced she almost wiped it clear off. Why was he looking like that? Did he like putting her in a position to freak out. He was acting like this wasn’t anything to worry about, like it was something to do on his daily To-Do list: 1) Fix hair perfectly 2) Wear something that looks amazing yet like I don’t pay attention to clothes 3) Go into the forest to duel with a big hairy spider while I insult it’s mother God this Diggory was going to be the death of her. Yeah, she still liked Starke a little more than just a friend but over his absence any thought of them perhaps rekindling that flame had died out almost completely. Now she just wasn’t sure where that whole problem sat between them. Well it was good he didn’t go in there for the sake of exploring the forest..he might not live through the night if he admitted that was the reason why. ”What Ravenclaw girl? Why was she going out there? If you followed because you’re a prefect then you should have stopped her before she got too far, docked some House points and sent her off to the head of her House.” she said exasperated. Boys and their way of thought were just beyond her comprehension most of the time.

Girls were such a mystery. It was beyond his fathoming why she could not just be impressed with his heroism. He had nearly died for crying out loud! He thought that was worth flaunting a bit to look good. It was one of the limited things about this situation that was positive. And yet Lex could not bring herself to let him have his moment. Of course, his interest would probably be the limited aspect if she did. It was no mystery to him that he was drawn towards the independent girls.
Still, he let out an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes as he shifted on the edge of the bed. Leaning back on his arms, he acted very nonchalant about it. Probably in an attempt to manipulate her off her course of questioning. However, this was a passive attempt, as he indulged her with an answer.
“Yes, because by following her into the forest I meant stalk her into the forest.” He said with the utmost sarcasm. “It wasn’t like I was right next to her when I saw her go in, Lex.” He clarified, but he could not help notice the feeling struck within him when he said her name. It was familiar with a girl he was interested in; as though by saying her name aloud created a sort of possession. She was all his in that moment. He probably shouldn’t be so cynical if there was hope for it in the future. After all, at least she was showing concern for him.

She was impressed with his heroic deed, even if dumb luck had a hand to play as well. At the moment she couldn't wrap her head around why no one had told the other students about this. Hogwarts used to be such a huge gossip chain, not it seemed like if anything big happened only a select few were allowed to know the details. Alexis wasn't one to like being kept in the dark. She wanted details, every last one about anything.
Rolling her eyes at Starke's sarcastic comment she brushed it off, a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth when he said her name. How he said it almost always brought a smile out of her. She remained seated for a moment before standing up again and she took a step over to close the distance between t hem before she just hugged him around the neck. Leaning her chin on his shoulder she closed her eyes. Turning her head a little so he could hear her, "You're a loon.. but I'm glad you're alright" she whispered, almost directly into his ear.
Her arms remained firmly around his shoulders for a short while, unable to resist lightly brushing her fingertips through the hair at the nape of his neck before pulling back to look him in the eye. "Gryffindor or not, you're a git. But I'm proud of you for not putting our house to shame" she said it teasingly, but the words were true. She was proud of him for being a hero, she just didn't want him to do it again..he needed to stay in one piece.

The manner by which Lex acted with him was one of Starke’s main attractions to her. While she could be lightly offended by him, the highly sought after rise one could get out a girl, and then immediately find amusement in him and smile was a delicate balance Starke, and many other blokes, could not get enough of. He liked to think that she only was this way with him, but he really did not know. After so long of her being mad at him, he was only just starting to get his bearings with her again.
Apparently it was only his mind that was prone to doubt. While he was surprised by her decided movement to hug him, his body shivered with excitement. Normally this would be nerves, but her touch was familiar, a feeling that his mind had stored away in the confines of his mind so it would not go into withdrawals without.
He tried to quietly let out a deep, held breath he had taken in. His mind raced with whether he should return the embrace, but he was far too distracted by her overwhelming presence to make a decision. Her warm breath made him feel weak in her arms, and he just wanted to be like this forever. All aches and pains were briefly healed as his mind was absorbed with her.
When she pulled back from him, he could only stare at her with a very boyishly dumbfounded expression. His mouth hung open slightly, his grey eyes fixated on her in a speechless decent from a euphoric state. After a moment he nodded in confirmation. And a moment later he was able to comprehend how pathetic he must look and he cleared his throat. Though he still had nothing to say. “I missed you.” He finally said in a simple tone that a friend might say to another they had not seen for years and took a moment to remember the classes they had together. This was because it was a partial lie. In his time at St. Mungo’s he had not thought of her any more or less than anyone else. But the duration of time she had spent angry at him, he truly had missed her.

Hugging Starke brought back a few memories. The first thought was how she always felt safe being around him and when hugging him she felt like they just fit right together. That was a little surprising considering how long she'd resented him but it was a comforting thought all the same.
When she pulled away from the hug she stayed standing in front of him and the look on his face was slightly amusing. He almost looked like a kid who just got kissed by his biggest crush. Tucking some hair behind her ear she smiled almost shyly at him when he spoke up finally and said that he'd missed her. Having held a grudge for so long, Lex didn't let herself miss him because of the grudge. That was one of the downfalls about her, if she held a grudge she'd put any other emotion on hold to just keep it up.
That thought made her extremely glad that they'd finally talked a little about what happened and had mostly just said let bygones be bygones. It was for the best anyway, a silly little squabble being held onto wasn't anything worth holding on to. "I missed you too" she replied softly giving him a little brighter smile before biting her lower lip just slightly. She'd wanted to say that to him for a long time, since she missed him in the last couple of years and she knew it was her own fault.
After their chat out on the lawns she felt like a weight had been lifted off her chest from finally letting her anger go, then with his sudden disappearance she thought at first maybe she had something to do with it. She was glad to know that was far from the actual cause, but if he had been killed she wouldn't have been able to handle that very well if at all.

Almost immediately after he had missed his change he regretted not hugging her back. Who knew when his next change was going to be? It was not like she was terribly predictable. Things could seem to be going in the right direction now, but that did not justify him expecting tomorrow to be the same. Even if right now she made him feel as though he was the only person in existence. That was just the fascinating and difficult thing about girls. When they loved you it was heaven, and when they hated you it was hell. And even if they were on good terms now, that would never end. Because it occurred to Starke that she, like all the others, did not mean to do it. By mere beautiful existence and knowing her she was destined to torture him.
“Really?” He asked with a hint of a smile, and a nervous little tingle of hope ran through him. He suddenly felt uncomfortable now. She could be messing with him out of revenge. After all, she had tied him up to a tree the last time he talked to her. Looking away, his demeanor gave way to his doubts and his expression turned to indifference. He pretended as though they both meant while he was gone. “Well I’m back now. Safe and sound.” He was back anyway. Safety was another matter. Swinging his legs up onto the bed before him, he leaned his back against the wall. He was in no state to have his heart broken by her, and he had to be careful not to let it get carried away with the hope she gave it. For a young man who practically gave his love to someone who smiled at him, that was a difficult task and took a great amount of deceit. Perhaps even to himself.
