"So you kissed Kai, then Toby got angry and kissed you, and... kissed you again? And because of all this kissing he's going to tell the truth?"
Josh couldn’t help but laugh at the way she sounded when she mentioned kissing. Honestly, the first time he’d tried it, it had been sloppy and wet and gross. But he had soon found out that with the right person – mind you, right could vary from time to time – it could be very enjoyable. Whenever Toby kissed him, it felt like nothing else existed anymore. There was no outside world, there were no other people, nor did terms like ‘past’ and ‘future’ come into play. It was just Toby, and him, and their lips together.
...Well sometimes hands too, but that wasn’t really the point.
”In a way” He answered, making sure that she didn’t drop off his shoulders by hoisting her up better. ”I suppose he realized that he doesn’t want to fight with me anymore. That me being with someone else pisses him off. I hope he realized that aside from not wanting to hurt me, he wants to be with me.” But that was a big step. A huge thing. Maybe it wouldn’t ever happen. Maybe tomorrow morning, things would turn out to be so different, like they had that night after the party. ”I’m hoping he’ll end up as my boyfriend, at some point.”

She wrinkled her nose and rested her chin atop his head, brushing orange confetti from his hair. Joshua with a boyfriend. It wasn't that she didn't want him to be with Toby if he could, because Toby clearly made him happy (except when he was making him miserable). It was that, when faced with the actual probability that they would end up together, she could not help but feel a twinge of fear. Everyone had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Everyone was in love with someone else, or at least liked them, which was a step in that direction. For the first time, she felt like she was being left behind.
She sighed and pulled his earlobe lightly. "Well, if he annoys you, I can still beat him up as much as I like," she joked. "Just because you do weird things with him doesn't mean he's protected."

He grinned, listening to her talk about how she would still beat up Toby if he hurt him. It was nice to have someone so protective over him, though at the same time he felt rather silly for thinking that a girl was going to beat up someone on his behalf. ”Thanks.” His voice was soft, eyes warm as he glanced over his shoulder. Sometimes he wondered what she thought about, when she looked this pensive. He didn’t want to ask though, didn’t want to make her talk about stuff that she wasn’t comfortable with.
The idea of dating Toby was a very scary thing. The one and only relationship he had had ended in a rather disastrous manner. And he hadn’t loved Ben nearly as much as he loved Toby Steele. What if the boy hurt him? Josh would be absolutely devastated. Heartbroken. He didn’t think he’d be able to stand it if they broke up, if their friendship got messed up again. It was probably a lot smarter to be friends and forget all about the kissing and making out they seemed to find themselves doing. But just the thought of never being allowed to kiss the other again made him miserable.
No matter the possible ending, Joshua wanted to try.
