Hmm, it was something all right, just a remanent of scent here and there, elusive and difficult to catch. The breeze was doing an annoying job of pushing all the scent of some form of carcass away from Tenebrus and Yale’s eager noses and back to the source. Hunting upwind was always a bother but the two thestrals didn’t exactly get to choose where creatures dropped dead. In desperation Tenebrus had taken to curling his upper lip to trap smells whenever the slightest whiff of not-quite-rotting-flesh appeared.
Fresh meat was of course always better, but there were few animals in the forest large enough to attack. That and most of them had the nasty habit of being able to fight back, so, scavenging it was. It was such a pity Idris had established to them that owls were strictly off the menu, there were so many of them flying around the canopy that Tenebrus’s whole herd could probably make an adequate living off them. Cats too; more meaty, equally not allowed.
Hopefully it wasn’t Acromantula, damn exoskeleton. Centaur, a little unlikely. Their dead had a strange habit of ending up underground and the other centaurs tended to get angry on any attempt to dig them up. Maybe the centaurs were like dogs and wanted to store the bodies to eat in winter? Strange, strange species.
By the time Tenebrus looked up from the ground on the off chance there were footprints anywhere, Yale was well and truly missing. Argh! Not again! He gave a severely agitated squawk and started turning his head wildly to try and catch a flick of a whip like tail anywhere or the glint of a pearly white eye. Nothing. Goddamnit, Yale!

The mare cantered beside her stallion, eagerly hunting the source of a tantalising scent. Hunting up wind was frustrating but Yale prided herself on her abilities, she felt she didn’t rely on Idris as much as the others did, that she was more a wild Thestral. That was how she felt but it was wrong, without Idris Yale wouldn’t be able to function. There would be no free food, no students to gawk at her and no one to look after her when she got sick.
With Tenebrus hunting beside her, the mare felt alive. Relishing the cool air running over her leathery skin and being on the move instead of stuck with the gossiping of the older mares. Out of nowhere Tenebrus stopped to investigate something, much to Yale’s dismay. She gave an irritated snort and waited for him. After what seemed like hours he was still busy and she was becoming more and more impatient. With a low screech, the mare took off, unsure whether he had heard her leave or not. Nose to the ground, she attempted to track where the smell was coming, being distracted by various small furry critters along the way.
Resisting the urge the pounce on a mouse that crossed her path, Yale stopped. Where the hell was Tenebrus? She swung her head around wildly, searching for any sign of her mate. She pawed the ground impatiently, letting out a loud demented neigh as she waited. He couldn’t be far, could he? The mare was half tempted to take to the skies and search for the other thestral from there but decided to stay on the ground for now so she didn’t lose the food’s scent.

(ooc: hope you don't mind me XD)
After the fiasco during CoMC where Lex learned she could see the Thestrals she had taken any spare time she could to spend up in the library reading her class book and checking out numerous of other books just to try and learn what she could about them. She thought about taking food down to the edge of the forest to see if she could coax them out to get a look at the strange creatures again but she couldn't think for the life of her where she'd be able to get some dead carcass. Finally, she remembered about the kitchens. After her last class she ran down to the painting of fruit and tickled the pear. She had brought a a satchel with her in hopes to get something to tempt the Thestrals.
After what seemed like hours, she finally persuaded the house elves that she wasn't going into the forest. Annoyingly enough that was what the first one she asked about raw meat guessed she was up to. A voice in the back of her mind mickied that she was facing detention if caught but she didn't care. She wanted to see them again. Stuffing the few strips of raw steak into her bag she hurried off careful not to run into any teachers as she trotted down the slope of the lawn towards the towering black forest.
Stopping at the edge and swallowed back her fear, pulling her wand from her pocket she stepped through the brush. "Lumos" she whispered, the light emitting from her wand giving her a clear path to see. She quickly found the path that she'd followed Professor Argall a few times down before and stopped when she could just barely make out the treeline. Pulling out a strip of meat she wrinkled her nose a bit at touching the cold, bloody steak but she glanced around trying to surpress her shivers of anxiety. She waved it a little to and fro in the wind, goosebumps creeping up on her skin from the chilly breeze that came through the trees.
She just wanted to see the thestrals and silently hoped that nothing else would creep up out of the darkness on her. At the leaves rustling around her, her eyes darted this way and that and her wand hand shook just slightly. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.. she probably should have at least asked her brother to accompany her.

Tenebrus quickly gave up on the prospect of finding the meat in a move so unexpected you would have thought someone in hell had just made a snowman. Tenebrus? Forsaking food? What was this magic?
When it came to losing one of his herd mates, especially one he got on well with enough like Yale, the herd won out. It was only one of two things that could tear his gaze away from something succulent, the other being the off chance he happened to be dead. Though, seeing as that one had never come up yet, he just had to worry about missing mares for the time being.
Hearing her neigh, Tenebrus attempted to find his missing love by heading to where he thought the sound had come from, and predictably ended up going in the complete opposite direction. After a short amount time another scent caught him, but it wasn’t the carcass, and it definitely wasn’t Yale. This was fresher, bloodier, but absent of the smell of sweat or onset of decay that should be going with it.
Crap, someone had brought steak and he couldn’t freaking have it!
That was epic levels of unfair!
It took a moment of hesitation to plan his next move. This was like one of those absolutely horrible questions on radio interviews. Would you like to be buried alive or eaten to death by fireants? It didn’t take long for Tenebrus to crack, he might as well attempt to have his cake and eat it too. Zombielike, or more appropriately, like a cartoon animal drawn by a heavenly scent, Tenebrus moved quickly in the direction of the steak to find a red coloured girl responsible for it.
God that food looked good. But... Yale.
Looking visibly uncomfortable in Alexis’s presence he started swaying back and forth on his front legs like a horse kept in a stall for too long, then gave a loud piercing shriek to see if Yale would have better tracking skills than he did. Hurry up woman, dinner was served for Pete’s sake.

Yale paused and listened for a second, where the hell was that damn stallion? As much as she thought Tenebrus was as awesome as air, he was so frustrating sometimes. The mare pawed the ground angrily before starting to head in the direction she’d come from. Why would he wander off without her? For a minute the mare paused and scanned the surrounding forest but there was still no sign of Tenebrus. Instead of her eyes, she let her ears search for her for a moment.
There it was! Yale definitely knew that screech. With an excited flick of her tail, she let out a loud answer and took to the skies in her stallion’s direction. It wasn’t long until she spotted him; it was pretty hard to miss him especially when he was standing beside a bright haired human. She folded her wings and let herself dive out of the sky, extending them again before she hit the ground. Yale landed next to Tenebrus gracefully and was about to give him ‘what for’ for leaving her when the scent of the steak hit her. The mare shook her head like she’d been slapped and let out a small screech of jubilation at the human.

Alexis was shivering more from the chilly autumn air now than from nerves being in the forest. Maybe they wouldn't be able to smell the steak? She lowered her wand to start putting the treat back into her bag when she heard hoofs stomping through the trees. Looking up in surprise at how quickly the sound stopped after hearing them start she stared wide eyed at the tall bony horse that had shown up.
She just stared for a moment, unable to read the look on the thestral's face but she knew he was agitated at least slightly from his swaying. Jumping at the shriek she glanced around hurriedly to see if there were anymore popping up from the trees. She only had six steaks.. oh god. What if a whole herd came out and saw she didn't have enough treats for them all?
She composed herself to possibly be making a hasty retreat after feeding the thestrals. "Hi there" she said quietly but thankful her voice didn't waver. "Oh.." she trailed off in hearing an answering shriek from the depths of the woods. She watched as the other thestral dived out of the tree tops.
Glad that there was a couple of tree stumps between her and the thestrals she laid a steak out on each one; one for each of them. She wiped her hand on her cloak shifting her weight from either foot a bit uncomfortably "I've got four more if it's just you two" she had no idea if they even cared that she was talking, or if they could even understand her.

With a sudden rush of air and a swoop, there she was: his Yale. That was why he loved her; she could arrive just at the right time for dear old Tenebrus to have his lunch, just like a good wife. He took just enough time to squawk at her agitatedly to inform her of his disappointment that she had gone and gotten her ass lost, then turned to the issue at hand. The issue of a meaty and yummy variety to be specific. Food, glorious food!
Whatever creature had invented humans needed to be given a freaking medal. A whole race of creatures whose sole existence was to scratch the itchy spots on his back and feed him whenever he required, how awesome was that? Life was gooood.
The steak provided on the stump only lasted something like 3.4 seconds if anyone happened to be timing. Tenebrus launched at it and snatched it up with an unbridled enthusiasm and proving once and for all that chewing was for the weak. It required a fair degree of restraint not to go for Yale’s too. She might kill him if he did.
Instead he made an attempt on the girl. The stumps weren’t exactly large so Tenebrus had no trouble jumping over them without a run up. She had more right? It was hard to smell over the funny perfumes she was wearing but there was definitely the odour of more. Tenebrus lowered his head down to the level of the bag, neck arched and tail thrashing around excitedly as he made a beeline right for her, greedy little eyes locked right on the satchel and leaving no question as to what he was after.

Yale was a little taken aback at Tenebrus’ agitation, if was he who had gone off and gotten lost, but it was soon forgotten. The smell coming from the steak was so good but it was a human who wasn’t Idris who was offering it. How did they know that the stranger could be trusted? The mare gave a small warning squeal as Tenebrus approached the girl. Nervously Yale paced back and forth, flapping her wings in impatience. She watched Tenebrus intently and going on his body language, the human could be trusted.
With another excited screech, the mare was at the stump in a heartbeat. She snapped at the meat greedily, God that felt so good but now she wanted more. It appeared that Tene had the right idea of going for the source and Yale quickly joined him. She snuffled at the girl’s clothes, licking them where she’d wiped her hand earlier. The thestral pulled her head back with disgust, that wasn’t meat even though it smelt and tasted like it. With a demanding squawk she turned to see what her mate had found, so that was where the thing was hiding it, in that weird body attachment on her back.

Alexis breathed a little sigh of relief when the second thestral ate the steak, almost not noticing the slightly larger one making a beeline for her. Squeaking softly in surprise, she backed up a couple of steps. Pointing her wand at him she almost yelled a hex, but stopped when she realized what he was doing. Duh, there were more bloody steaks in her bag making a stain that she couldn't see in the dark. "You're certainly impatient aren't you?" she murmured with a slight grin, amused at his tail wagging. He reminded her somewhat of a dog looking for a treat.. a large bony dog with bat-like wings.
She pulled out a second steak for Tenebrus and handed it over, doing the same with the second animal. She jerked her hand back each time once they had a hold of the steak. She didn't want to lose any fingers to those fangs in their mouths. Watching them gobble the second steak she didn't waste anytime in giving them the last of her stash "I haven't gotten anymore, sorry." she said softly once they were finished. Fixing her scarf around her neck, she dug around in her bag just incase she'd missed one and pulled out another smaller bag. "All I've got left are these M&Ms.. but I doubt you want them." She held the small yellow bag of candy in her hands, a bit curious in what their skin felt like but she wasn't stupid enough to reach out and touch one without either of their permission.
Having watched the bigger thestral that seemed more inclined to trust her she racked her brain for his name. She knew it.. Ten.. something, he'd been at the lesson last week. "Oh.. you're Tenebrus, right? You came to our class with Professor Argall last week." even though they were hardly paying her attention other than to get into her satchel she kept talking. "I'm afraid I don't know your name, but you're gorgeous." she spoke to the mare smiling slightly, still a little nervous but not as much as she was. She wasn't lying totally, she was sure very few people would call a thestral gorgeous, but they were in their own way.

Tenebrus visibly hesitated when Alexis yanked out her wand and pointed it right at him. That was bad. He didn’t know what a wand was, or what it was called, or how to use it let alone anything else, but what he did know was they shot painful little blasts of light and sometimes make loud cracking noises which were absolutely hideously unpleasant. Also, they tended to accompany a stronger smell of sweat from the holder and a tightening of the forehead muscles which he’d long ago learned to realise was the human body-language equivalent of a ‘back off’. Like a dog raising its hackles and baring its teeth. This one wasn’t sweating much and looked more surprised than anything, but the wand was still a clear warning.
Just as suddenly, down it went, and up came the awesome prize of amazingness. Foood! This yellow haired red girl seemed a little bipolar or something. Never mind, she was offering raw goodies and if she really was crazy he’d better nab it before she changed her mind.
Tenebrus grabbed the meat out of her hand in the usual careless style, a quick snatch with no attention paid as to what was finger and what wasn’t. Thankfully Alexis’s hand emerged unscathed and Tenebrus was free to do a victory thrash of his head as though to try and break the steaks non-existent spine. The rest of them went down in much the same way with Tenebrus becoming more and more enthusiastic with each one and raising the odds of a finger-nipping impressively.
Then, without warning, food supply dried up. Tenebrus waited pointedly for about 30 seconds for another one and gave a throaty squawk of impatience when none came. What, that was it? The girl said something apologetically, and then pulled out something yellow. It didn’t smell like food, but hey, it could be.
With lightning speed Tenebrus made a lunge for it and prised the candy free in such a manner it was a miracle Alexis even had a hand to speak of after that. The plastic crackled under his teeth, the texture was smooth and it definitely didn’t taste very appetizing. Still, she’d basically given it to him so it had to be something good.
The odds of Tenebrus swallowing the load of highly indigestible plastic was extremely real and he fully intended to once he worked out the best way to swallow it whole. Colic and intestinal blockages ahoy! Somehow the odds were slight Idris would appreciate the vet bill if that was to occur. Tenebrus was also apparently determined not to make it easy for Alexis to get it back; he knew she had nothing else to offer so he was already starting to excitedly wander off with it to examine it further.
